I feel like Lego really needs a plain clear/white light-brick, so they can put it behind whatever translucent brick colour they need it to be

Totally. “In Arishem’s shadow” used an orange one behind a pink plate that would have looked so good with a white LED, but the orange just powers through the pink and comes out orange.

The funny thing is that they released an rgb duplo brick not too long ago which has multiple colour options and combinations, so it is indeed high time they could update on the system side as well.

I've found so much joy with Zane's Titan Mech, the tiger, and even Mega's large scale Master Chief I almost got into microscale but this is my niche. Everything I loved about Bioni- okay no story. but everything I love about the Bionicle figures, but with a longer, more satisfying build.

My only real complaint with this thing's the arms. They're sat too low down, the shoulder pads put me off and he's only got 4 fingers instead of 5, the lightbrick shouldn't have been included if they're not going to try and get the correct colour. Good attempt, but not quite there. They should have made a balljoint assembly on the top of the bicep for the shoulder pad so that it's not sitting so low down

This shows that Bionicle figures might work well with todays pieces. But 6 Toa would cost 240(!) which kills that idea immediately.

In order to make it reasonable they'd probably have to scale it down a bit. I believe the drum-lacquered parts on this model probably inflate the price a bit as well, and origina Lego IPs have always had at least somewhat of a price advantage over licensed products, for whatever reason. So I think it would be feasible

The original Toa Mata were very small and simple, a hypothetical new version could just be small and use mostly mixel joints. This size then could be reserved for titan sets!

This looks much better in the review than the box art suggests. Shame the shoulder joint isn't in the right place. Hopefully someone could make a fix for it.

This definitely feels like a downgrade compared to CCBS IMO due to it being basically the same size, volume and overall purpose as a 20 dollar figure but for double the price. The set itself isn't too bad overall, arm/shoulder situation is a shame but I'm sure there's a reason for it, hopefully Lego will continue to make sets like this one, I've sorely missed buildable action figure sets. Great review as always, Jang!

Well yes it costs about twice as much, but it also comes with about ten times as much pieces. As an owner of some CCBS action figures myself (early Hero Factory heroes, not the later Star Wars figures) I vividly remember how disappointed I was with the models' hollowness and openness. This style of constraction figure right here is way more dense, looks good even from the back and has almost no awkward gaps (except for those elbow joints). Also if you're like me and don't shelve your Lego models forever, when you take this one apart you get a bunch of normal System bricks that you can use for anything, instead of just a few CCBS bones and shells that you can only ever use for more action figures.

  • @JJTheDev

indeed, CCDs does have some advantages, but system gives you more useable pieces. as much as we bionickes and hero factory fans do want more action figures, being able to just use the pieces to build normal stuff is still helpful, especially if for example I want to make this figure a mech suit, with system it's easy, with ccbs I need to convert which adds lost space

Are you serious? That line, especially the Marvel ones, were atrocious. He had nothing on the wrists, a weird half naked shoulder-mounted gun and, listen Bionicle is my life but, you snap those things together in 5 minutes. I miss CCBS but that Iron Man was horrible.

As a Bionicle fan, this kinda hurts. It's good that Lego is still trying new things, from time to time, but man I miss a pure constraction line :/ My main issue is that I don't want a licensed action figure line, I want an original IP from Lego. Oh, btw, gg to the designer for basically avoiding any weird colour while making a strong and balanced buildable action figure, at least it looks nice and plays nicely too.

I have this guy already and it's really amazing how little it lacks for it to be perfect in what it does, in my opinion at least (Mostly those shoulders).

Mmm, reeeeally not liking this direction, but I see a lot of good here. I feel like a torso ab crunch would be nice, and the shoulders should definitely be fixed. The rotation at the waist feels too low, just like 2016's Toa sets. LEGO still hasn't hooked me into anything new, and it's a darn shame. Not to mention the price is... *so* high. The deluxe quality of all the gold here is really good though, and the light brick does bump up that classic base price for a buildable figure. I feel like scratching 5 dollars would make that feel a lot better but my mother would never spend that much on me as a child in one sitting. 🤣 And I probably wouldn't spend that much as an adult.

Kind of torn on this approach. While the System approach can lead to less skeletal and gap-y builds, as mentioned, it also loses the Technic aspect of traditional constraction. I can live with that, but the build density is also leading to constraction becoming more expensive, which was notably a problem during Bionicle G2. I'm curious to see where this goes. Still, I'm glad they finally figured out that System-built humanoids can have knees. The lack of posing options for recent System mechs has been a serious problem, and it's frustrating that instead of making stronger joints they often decide to not have joints at all.

  • @mechafizz

    @mechafizz

    2 жыл бұрын

What's really interesting to me is that this Iron Man figure seems to be very conscientiously designed in regards to what types of joints are used where. Shoulders, hips, and ankles are ball joints, knees are ratchet joints, wrists, neck, and waist are mixel/small ball joints. I can't recall another set that's employed more than two joint types at once. Just from my experience as a Bionicle/CCBS/constraction builder, ball joints are pretty sturdy and secure. G2 Bionicle utilized them to great effect in some of the larger figures' gearbox designs to add enough friction to prevent the wacky-wild-floppy-flailing-arm syndrome that G1 bionicle figures tended to suffer from. However, for whatever reason ball jointed knees tend to be weak point once you've surpassed a certain size/weight in a humanoid build. Larger constraction sets often employed back-of-knee-to-ankle pistons to increase knee strength and a few even used multiple parallel ball joints per knee. If I had to guess, I'd suppose that using specifically ratchet joints for the knees specifically is what affords this Iron Man such stability in its posing. Which poses (pun intended) a rather odd revelation if true---LEGO had strong enough joints the whole time (ratchet joints), they just either a) hadn't realized out how to properly utilize them to the fullest until now, or b) the actual issue was never with the joints themselves, but a challenge in securing the rest of the limb around the joint elements (after all, it doesn't matter how strong your knee joints are if your leg breaks above them).

Very cool looking set, I hope if this does well they will make more suits, I particularly would love a mark one set. as with all previous large figure systems (technic based, Knights kingdom, Bionicle 06-09, CCBS) it will work well for characters that do not show human faces like iron man or boba fett or General Grevious. But if they try with anything such as Thor or Captain America they will fail completely.

Characters are difficult to build in Lego. Especially at this scale. The arms are a little weird but overall this is cool. I dont think the box art does the face disjustice (it kinda does tho), but I think the face piece just doesnt look good head-on, it seems very flat from only that angle. The lightbrick is sad, but the biggest problem is the shoulders just being too low, and I dont think it works if you have the arms in any other pose than straight down. Better than I thought

It looks a bit better that I initially thought and it seems to work surprisingly well as an action figure. Make the arms actually connected to the shoulders and the torso able to bend ever so slightly and they’re good. Lego knows that there's a market for buildable action figures, but clearly they think that the CCBS system isn't profitable enough, and the old 'system' from Bionicle (there was never really one consistent system though, they kept changing it) faded out too. So going almost entirely system was the clear next step, and for a first attempt, I think this set has done a great job. Yeah, it has its issues, but every first attempt is bound to have issues (Bionicle had tons of issues when it first started, and it was still a huge hit), but I absolutely think Lego is capable of refining this system and doing a great job with it. (Note, I also loved the first generation of Bionicle, and still do. Seeing issues with it doesn't contradict that)

After no luck due to every thing bought out. Luck hit me though as the Lego Store had a sale if you bought 2 figures and just looking at the box impressed me. I'm not a major collector but I have some rare items and I had to buy 2 of these. One for me and One he can tear up LOL. I have to admit it was more impressive when I built mine I think its the best I have bought yet from Lego And being a droid suit it looks more realistic than a human figure. And of coarse I had to watch the Original Iron Man as I was building it to get that killer Guitar riff along with it. Nothing but fun. And yes fair price I don't feel Ripped Off at all. now time for the collection shelf. LOL

Maybe popularity will lead to TLG to finally create some new joint pieces like they did with Mixels and Hero Factory? We have little joints and big joints, but nothing in between. Plus they have almost always been in black or light/dark bluish gray. If TLG created a range of joints, in different colours, it would enable SO many possibilities, and lessen the need for hiding exposed skeletons (as they could be the same colour as the outer pieces).

Probably I won’t be so upset about the elbow and shoulder if this’s a random robot from somewhere. But this’s the iron man, and the iron man is a human in a suit, so it’s unacceptable to see a human having such a weird shoulder and elbow. Exaggeratedly I would say even a minifig has better portion and looks better than this stuff.

Seems like I might be of unpopular opinion here but this is one of those models where the longer I look, the weirder it gets. The wide shape of the head hits first, then I notice how flat the torso is, the shoulders are hovering separately over the arms, the arms are mounted too low, the hip joints are oddly exposed, legs are very square, theres way too many different representations of gold, and to top it all off the light brick doesn't glow with the right colour.

Coming from a dude who collects a fair amount of Action Figures, $40 isn't that bad if the quality is there. You can get more for less, but less for more is pretty common...

I don't really understand why lego doesn't use those ratcheted joints for knees more often. It seems like if the mech is relatively lightweight, those should be strong enough to hold it up?

Loved CCBS when they released the Star wars figures, love this style even more. both cases have a really weak head\helmet sadly

Honestly I hated the look of this set when it was first revealed, but I can honestly say it's growing on me. Definitely not something I'll buy at full price, but if I see it at 20% off or better it seems fairly compelling, and as someone who still likes CCBS, I'm glad that they've created the next iteration of large action figure.

Thanks for the review, Jang. This set looks so unpleasant IMHO. Wish they would just return to Bionicles.

I'd rather it not have the light brick and it be 35 dollars if I'm gonna be honest, and while I do miss the CCBS, this does have some meanignful edges and could be used for bringing something like hero force back (hopefully). All in all, not overpriced when you consider the disney tax, but it was really nice how affordable hero factory stuff was for their size and quality, especially if you were willing to do some more stuff with custom acessories

Not terribly crazy about the large figures like this. In my humble opinion, the Boba Fett is VERY well done, and the best in the line. This Iron Man figure looks wonky to me, the two biggest things being the arms and the head. The arms just don't look right, and out of position. The worst thing is the helmet, it just looks cheesy, incomplete and shaped badly. If the helmet was actually brick-built, I would give it a little more slack, but given that it is 100% a molded part, I think they could have done better. Thanks for sharing!!!

There's a few things to like here but also a few things that are very bad. The arms are great, but them sticking out from so low on the torso looks very ugly. The legs also look very good and are by far my favourite part of the build. The lacquered gold is stunning and works super well for this set. However, the torso and head is where my criticisms are. The torso looks very blocky to me and just not very good. The light brick feature is cool in concept but the light not being blue means it might as well not have been included. Its shapes also feel off. The head is just horrendous in my opinion. Using that piece for the front of the head just does not work. It's too wide from the front. The rest of the head being so blocky does not look good either. In conclusion it's an okay set but it could have been a lot better in my opinion. It really doesn't look a whole lot like the Mark 43. I feel if the torso and head were better this could have been a great set.

While I am sad to see CCBS seemingly abandoned for good, I can't be so without guilt for being critical and dismisive of it at the time due to nostalgia and ignorance and thus not supporting it when I had the chance. It is pleasing to me to see that in their attempt to return to buildable figures instead using normal system, they've put in a lot of effort to make it look good and remain sturdy and playable. And as for the price, honestly it looks to be bigger than a similarly priced Transformer so by my metric that feels about right given the complexity, design and part quality.

As a minifig centric collector, this set never had appeal to me. Still don't intend to buy the set but after watching this I can appreciate the work Lego put into poseability. Not a bad looking model, though!

Only 90 degrees at the knees? I'm so spoiled by Bandai... I'm used to crazy leaping/flying poses with one leg folded and the other trailing behind... And my Gundams always oblige me for that.

I feel like this new system based CCBS line would work better with a certain theme oh what is it called "BIONICLE" or "HERO FACTORY" this is perfect/prime material for a revamp/revival for those two themes as these liscensced figures all they way back to the original marvel, ben 10, and star wars buildable figures (outside chewbacca and grevious) don't work. Bionicle and Hero factory where the only two that took full advanatge of the CCBS system, i hope LEGO considers bringing the themes back i like the figure as it's a good attempt but the scaling/shaping is kinda off and the price of £35 to me isn't worth it i'd rather £25-22.

Feels more like a mech than a buildable figure. Basically like Exo Force or those Ninjago mech. I think it's unfair to compare it to CCBS or Constraction. That being said I do love it! But think it would work better for mech designs than people. Let's hope that Disney doesn't force Lego to run it into the ground with poor sales of figures no one wants, just as they did to CCBS/Constraction, and that Lego creates more robot-like figures from this "new" system.

As a Bionicle fan I don't really see the appeal of this figure. The proportions are wonky and the price compared to CCBS is horrendous, unless you want to go for the parts as MOCcing material. The parts are cool I guess, but as an action figure/display model, it looks almost worse than the 2012 CCBS counterpart. How do they compare in size?

I would love to see an original Lego theme IP in this sense * erhm * * Bionicle * ehrm *. I prefer CCBS...but if this is all we're gonna get at this stage...I'll take it. Just want new constraction content so much. I haven't bought a newly released lego set in such a long time. Nothing Lego makes these days interests me like how Bionicle and Hero Factory did. Please Lego...just do something for the constraction fan base.

Gotta be honest, I'm not a fan of how this looks. The proportions are extremely odd, the elbows look like they're snapping off when rotated forward, and generally it doesn't look anywhere near as poseable as CCBS figures. I would prefer to see them experiment and expand on the action figure building system they already have instead of abandoning it.
