For the more recent ones those can simulate laser fire while the other type of flick fire bricks are more for physical projectiles. You totally missed the first lego stud shooter.... the Pirate Cannon from 1989. Sold with only the first wave of the black sea baracuda in 1989. Then outlawed in the US as a choaking hazzard. It brought the change of holes in 1x1 heads and 1x1 round bricks for breathing if a child swallowed it. Lego redesigned the Cannon as a 1 piece non firing. The shooting Cannon was sold in Europe as an accessory pack.

@@janbfiala there was an European accessory pack, I don't remember the number, of 2 shooting cannons, with the base and wheels (no rubber tires) and a bunch of 1x1 round bricks. Lego created a plastic tube in place of the spring making it non shooting, to comply with US child safety laws, then redesigned the Cannon piece into a 1 piece non firing version for US sets. I do not know if Europe got shooting / non-shooting cannons in which sets. US child safety laws were changed about spring loaded toys after a few children got hurt and I think 1 or 2 or a few died. Big safety issue.

One of my all time favorite sets, 21151 Lego minecraft the end shows what could have been a better reality. It features a flick shooter with thoughtful implementation (Literally into the body of the set and with a trigger MECHANISM), and a stud shooter that connects to a plate. If all stud shooters and all flick missiles were like this, there would be no problems with them. I am of the opinion that it's the BAD sets that make the reputation.

While I can see where people can see it being tacky or childish, I always thought they were really good for barrage type of weapons to be literally littered over any kind of vehicle, especially when they were hidden and could pop out. One example being the 2007 Hailfire droid set. Always loved the missiles on the set

The problem with the sping loaded missels is that the the missle piece can only be used for that one piece and lego bricks should always be multipurpose if possible. This is why the flick missels are more lego like. A solution might be to ad a little lego compatible bar behind the head making the spring loaded missiles shoot from both the flick and spring loaded barrels.

the flick fire missiles do look more artistically appealing, though from a playstyle point of view, i never found them to be very powerful. maybe I was just firing them wrong, but w/e. the spring loaded launchers do a better job of firing so better for playing with, though I find in some kits they go off too easily when either grabbing the set or putting it down. A lot of the time I just leave them unloaded if i feel like they will fire too easily when moving the set. I am not a fan of the stud shooters. for playing with, they are fine, but I do prefer the blasters. the stud shooters remind me of the kinetic form of the old "blasters" lego used to use that used a stud and a microphone like piece.

Off the top of my head... I seem to remember there being a sort of disc-launcher in, at the very least, one or two of the Mars Mission sets. It was a cylindrical container with a slot at the bottom and a plastic tab on the side that could be pulled back and released to flick the discs out I also remember Bionicles having a bunch of cool projectile launchers. From my childhood I remember only two (unless you wanna count the let-it-rip style propeller launchers) -- there was an elastic-powered ball launcher for one line and a mechanical 6-shooter with custom darts for another.
