I think the legs are supposed to suggest that the entire base was transported to the planet's surface in one piece, down from orbit and landed on those legs after deploying them in flight, as opposed to being constructuted directly on the surface. Definitely an interesting take on the space base idea, although I personally much prefer the lunar base from two years ago.

I'm going to defend the spaceship ramp. It has the arrows pointing up. Every kid knows that arrows speed things up, therefore the spaceship wouldn't be able to leave the orbit without the ramp. Also, it just looks nice. It looks nice with and without something on it. A lot of stands like that only look nice with something on them.

Definitely sold on this line. Not a massive fan of previous Space lines, but I am a huge Subnautica fan and these sets look like perfect sources for Subnautica MOC parts. The modular sections even look exactly like the Seatruck modules from Below Zero. The sets also look fantastic, if I wasn’t more into Subnautica it would still be a definite buy just for the sets themselves.

The yellow "terrain" with the loop looks like a palate! like for moving samples and equipment. You could take of the 2x2 jumpers and put other stuff on there to move around the site. You could take the loop off and attach it to the top of other parts of the set or other sets from the same theme :)

The biggest sell on this line is that it really does feel well-rounded. The builds, vehicles, etc. are versatile and interesting enough that it can appeal to kids AND adults with the level of detail. I really like what LEGO has done here

I think an underrated aspect of most of the vehicles in this theme is that their cockpits tend to be big enough for minidolls. Some are even obviously designed for the. Like the Space Rover with those little feet rest things.

I definitely feel you on the whole "Evil leader look" thing. I'm sure it's accidental, gold is meant to represent high status, and black won't get mixed with sub fractions that are colour coordinated, it is also the reverse of white that's the main shared colour among sub factions. So i understand why he looks like he looks.... But I'm expecting a twist down the line

The spaceship module should have a crane loop, so that you can load it and connect it with the crane (and put it on the rover?). Could have another module instead of the launch pad, and then you have play based of that

I’m really hoping you do a video of all of the City Space sets together to really showcase the interchangeability of parts with modules, batteries, terrain, etc. It’s a shame there isn’t more in this set for the crane, but there is another set that includes two large rocks with loops and a small lift arm that would be for loading and unloading the truck in the field.

  • @SwiftpawWolffox

I think the cool thing to do would be to combine this with the previous City Space base set, and then you would have more of an actual base compound. This being the 'base' set has me convinced the alternate metallic colors or things like this engineer's red helmet is a style of ranking.

Cargo Modules I think instead of that single cargo pallet, they should have made interchangeable equipment modules that could drop onto the back of the truck. like maybe one is a mini science laboratory, another could be a cargo box for loading crystals. then the play pattern of the crane being available only at Home Base kinda makes sense, you'd reconfigure the truck there, then send it out on different missions. ideally these would be the same Modules with the 'airlock' connector seen across the line, Though that introduces the challenge of then not being designed with a crane hook spot...

This whole series is a big win overall. I like the colors, the designs, the prints, those awesome minifigs, and the module system. Very cool. This is the first set that I think you've reviewed that has had some "issues" with it. The little cargo palate seems weird on its own. It would have been great to see the parts from the launcher used to give us another module, some more cargo crates for the crane, and some headgear. Not a fan of the big stickers, but that is what it is now. So close.

This set looks so much better here than it did in the promo shots. However, I agree that the takeoff ramp is superfluous. I don't understand why they didn't do cargo containers instead. It would have been perfect for this set; the ship brings cargo down to the surface and the crane unloads it. Second crate holds the crystals. They could have even incorporated a cargo system with the other space sets.

This set would go crazy as a kid. Even as an adult, though I would tweak some stuff (more optimal interior use, a crate or two for the crane to also pick-up, two fewer chairs in the command center), I would still be very happy to have what is present. I appreciate the truck and more complex frame as well. The price point for this specific wave has seemed really good overall!

I think the crane on the tower is meant to grab the grabby hole on the platform from the small terrain piece and then gets unloaded to the track rather than the other way around. And the old man with the gold and black suit is some kind of commander of some sort which explains the outfit that symbolizes authority although it can be mistaken as some sort of villain by the way it looks.

I think the shuttle being able to transport the crystals around makes perfect sense, not necessarily to just bring them to the orbital station, but all the way back to earth for study. It and the station are intended to function like the Apollo mission lunar models, where the lander separates from a orbital station to land, and then reconnects after take off to return home. I also think the launch ramp _kinda_ makes sense, the arrows clearly indicate an upwards take off, and I think what Lego is going for is it to use engine back blast to help boost the rocket. It would also propel the blast away from the ground, allowing stuff to safely be in closer proximity to the pad. Great review as always! I'm also so glad to see you be critical of Lego when they slack, the price; lack of alternate headgear/faces; limited usage for the crane and cargo are all disappointing, which lowers the value when compared to it's cost. Lego could do a lot better with this set, and since they want to charge premium prices, they **need** to

I’ve been wondering about that gold spaceman too. My interpretation is he is an investor or owner of the company. Sort of an Elon Musk and SpaceX deal. His suit is eccentric and gaudy because that’s just what money does to a person. The whole wave gives a Star Trek, optimistic look on the future and their face seems friendly enough. Perhaps he’s one of the good billionaires.

It just dawned on me: the computerscreens are homages to Star Trek's LCARS. The small vertical band that moves into a wider vertical band is typical of that styling. And logical! Figured it out. That piece of soil is supposed to be in place a top of the mining fround with the amoebe. After mining it, you load it into the truck. The truck drives it to the base where it can be unloaded and samplea of it can be examined in the lab. The soil you can load into the spaceship, which flies it to that other big space set for further research, with as result the invention of kragle.

Talking about malformed parts worst cases I had the last 5 years are, within 60264 I had a warped and split yellow top piece. Which was no longer usable. Also had a warped and slightly squished torse piece with the 60405 rescue helicopter. And I love that set. Probably the best helicopter Lego released in years. As far as missing parts nothing yet... Had an odd leftover piece once. Which I got 1 too many off. Hardly ever happens as well. Another concern is misaligned sticker sheets. Which is frustrating especially if the sticker is like a menu sticker or something. Which often goes on a white tile with a black backing on the sticker for example. Then you notice too much that it is misaligned. Years back before this I had 1 wrong type of tire with a Speed champion set. X instead of O. I feel like QC is a pretty big issue with Lego, they claim that everything should be right. But we all know it is not. Especially if you buy sets often. You come across issues plenty of times. Luckily it isn't as bad as it is with Hasbro.

It is a shame when they make cranes a big feature of sets and then don't add many ways of using it (and are cranes that fun for kids anyway?) Instead of the crane I think there could've been some landing pads around the command tower for landing small 'flyers' on. Then the parts budget for the take off ramp could've been used on little ships/flyers/speeders for the astronauts to get around on

I wish that there was another docking port on the base so it could act more like a central hub than an end piece. The ramp could be necessary for transporting large payloads to orbit. But I think instead of a launch pad a landing pad would be better because the modules would all be in orbit from the ring station and need to be transported to the surface.
