Well I read that WuKong is immune to fire by chanting a fire proof spell, but because Red Boy suddenly blew smoke into his eyes, he couldn’t chant properly anymore and got burnt. Frankly, WuKong’s awesome looking red eyes that he got by being cooked in Laozi’s cauldron for 49 days that. Is also dubbed as the “Golden eyes fiery gaze” (火眼金睛) that can see through demonic disguises is actually over glorified dried eye.

The detail in this episode for Guan Yin is amazing. Notice the butt ton of hands that are come out of her. That represents her 1000 hands, given to her so she can help the people in need. Fun fact: She had lived a fulfilling life of sacrifice and great love, that she earned a place in Nirvana after death. However, even when she was at the gate, she heard a plea from earth and turned her back towards final peace to help the person instead. Earning her Immortality that way.

5:18 I like to think every time Monkey breaks into the ocean, heaven, or wherever else, there's a perfectly functioning door, like, 2 meters to the left. At least one god has tried to remedy this once by not patching the hole and just building a new door over it, but next week Monkey just broke in a bit further down.

@@Sarah12471 the lifetime is expanded by a ridiculous amount so he can live for an immeasurable amount of time but he also can’t die because of his training so a “death” is more of a major injury. In terms of fire immunity he can resist earthly and heavenly fire but the True Fire of Samedhi is neither so it can hurt him.

@Kathryn Rovito and @Jayavishnu she releases every part after one another and she will finish it it just takes a while for each part to come out. The reason why these take so long is because of the fact she has to read and animate for other things on the channel, so this only gets worked on for a small portion of her time. Not to mention she cuts out some of the story as it's very episodic (not saying those parts are bad, in fact they're quite the contrary) and then animate in the little time she has.

Tran Dai Phuc nope. It’s different types of mythical fire that isn’t really fire. The fire red kid uses is also why some people when walking alone at night, pat themselves on the shoulders and head to ward off evil: the average human, especially young men, has 3 lamps of that type of fire on their shoulders and head. The strength depends on health and yin yang balance etc. Ghosts need to turn off those three lamps in order to harm the person walking at night

It's like Renaissance-era paintings, but written. Odd bit of trivia: Shakespeare was active during this time as well. Maybe it really was a renaissance of writing.

Technically a lot of the stories in the book are wayyyyyyyyy older. A lot of the book was based on oral and written folktales and fictionalized versions of historical events that the author would have known about since he was a kid. Tripitaka's character is based on Xuanzang, a monk from the Tang Dynasty who defied a travel ban to make the journey to the west/India in real life. The basis for Sun Wukong/Monkey comes from a bunch of different stuff over time, and at earliest dates back to 700 bce.

Interesting fact: The Bull Demon King is the inspiration for Bowser. Originally, Shigeru Miyamoto wanted the villain of _Super Mario Bros._ to be an anthropomorphic bull in reference to the _JttW_ character, but when it was pointed out to him that a bull being king of a bunch of turtles didn’t make a lot of sense thematically, he decided to change him into a giant turtle with a few bull-like features to maintain the connection. That’s why Bowser has bull horns and a snout instead of a turtle beak.

Ok, I know it's been 3 years but can we acknowledge how cute it is that the Bull demon king cares so much about his son to never shut up about his birthday?

We don't know what happened to Red Boy after this.Maybe he ended up becoming Kuan Yin's slave. Maybe he reconciled and started crashing in his dad's basement. Maybe he revealed he was a girl the whole time and spent millennia learning about other cultures' legends and folklore to one day tell the masses about them through videos. We just don't know.

Red Boy is based on Sudhana (Ch: Sancai), whose spiritual journey is told in the 'Gandavyuha Sutra' (c. 3rd-cent.). The youth sets out on a quest towards enlightenment and trains under 52 different teachers, including Maitreya, Avalokiteśvara (the South Asian variant of Guanyin), Manjusri, and Samantabhadra. This is why he becomes Guanyin's disciple in the novel. As stated by a previous person, this explains why some religious paintings include a small praying child standing next to the Bodhisattva.

Fun fact someone pointed out, but in the cartoon Monkey Kid, they drop a LOT of nods to the original JTTW including Red Son (Red Boy) punching himself to activate his Samadi fire in a flashback. Some events and characters are shuffled around in MK from the original story but overall it actually is pretty close to the orginal and sort of creates its own AU canon. It gets lost in all the action, adventure, and jokes but there is a subtle undertone of Sun-Wu Kong by the point MK starts having grown to really miss his friends and traveling companions since being super immortal he has outlived all of them. Oh they also make a cut-off reference to that time he picked a fight with Budda.

I rewatch these episodes a bunch and realize just how much subtle character development goes on. like Piggsy actually helping, the one that really stands out is Sun wukongs rush to take a blow for Guan Yin think about it, he has no reason to do this. she's not tripitaka and its not his job to help her but he does so anyway because that's just what he does now!

"yes, give me the child" I just can't help but read that small piece of dialogue with a demon voice and it is just hilarious! Finally, we get to see part 4!

Fun fact, Moksha - Quan Yin's disciple, is Prince Nezha's older brother. They also have an eldest brother named Jinzha, who is the disciple of another Buddha. Their family's own mythology - which is also Nezha's origin story - is pretty insane and interesting that Red should totally cover one day.

In my opinion, this one scene that talks about the vase Guanyin gives Monkey King is pure genius on the LMK writers' part in the episode that discusses it. When I learned it was the same vase I seriously yelled "HOW CONVENIENT!!!" so many times and clapped my hands so hard my palms hurt that my Mom had to call me out while she was upstairs selling online

IIRC, it was some demon disguised himself as Tripitaka, but the illusion was so good even Monkey's eyes can't see through it. So they had the real one recite the migraine spell.

The story takes place in the Kingdom of Wuji and kicks off when the gang stay for the night and Tripitaka has a dream in which the ghost of the King of Wuji comes and infodumps his sob story - that several years back a Toaist sage came and did some magic tricks to impress him and gain his trust, after which the sage tricked him and sealed him inside a well. The Taoist sage then impersonates the King and takes his place on the throne and he's been ruling the kingdom ever since with no one knowing. As proof of all this, the King's ghost leaves his royal emblem kinda thing (a bit like a royal seal or a signature, only it's a physical object) with Tripitaka. When he wakes up Tripitaka realizes he actually has the emblem on his person and gets Monkey and Pigsy to open up the sealed well and rescue the King. They do (he's dead obviously but they grab some elixir from Lao Tzu and he's all better). After that, they recruit the Prince of the Kingdom, rescue the queen who's been trapped in the court for all that time and go to confront the Taoist sage who predictably turns out to be a demon. He is fairly weak and is no match for the crew and after getting his ass handed to him he escapes back to where Tripitaka is waiting and transforms into him. No one can tell which is the real Tripitaka by sight so as the solution to this problem, they come up with the idea of getting both of them to recite the migraine spell, since they know that only the real one actually knows it. The demon is ousted and right before they kill him one of the Bodhisattvas (not Guan Yin) shows up and reveals that the demon is actually his Azure Lion mount, so it's kinda similar to these stories in this video in that the demon turns out to be someone's pet.

Yeah it's a pretty popular trick used by bandits, they have one of them who look the least suspicious to pretend to be in need of help (like their carriage broke down) and lure unsuspecting travellers into their trap. Even better if the bait is a beautiful woman (working with the bandits) cause not only does she appear innocent but she could also lure those who aren't actually charitable but are attracted by her beauty. That's why you have many old stories (from different cultures) telling you to be suspicious of beautiful women in shady places (like in a forest or on a road far from town).

Kuan Yin perfectly embodies that moment of ultimate terror when a person of naturally calm demeanor who *never* gets visibly angry *finally* loses their shit on someone. Even a couple of seconds of being on the receiving end of that is as bad as a thousand year stay in hell. And, just as with Kuan Yin, it is always an *extremely long overdue and greatly deserved* punishment for whoever dared to push things that far.

In fact, Sun WuKong is not afraid of fire, but afraid of smoke. When Sun WuKong was taken into the Alchemy Furnace by Lao Tzu, he hid in the position of "巽", so he was not burned. However, in the eight trigrams, “巽” symbolizes “wind”, so Sun WuKong’s eyes were hurt by the smoke from the wind and became “golden-gaze fiery-eyes. Sun WuKong’s eyes can recognize the demon, but correspondingly, it is afraid of smoke. In Journey to the West, Sun WuKong was twice in distressed because of his eyes being attacked, in the stories of "Yellow Wind Demon" and "Red Boy."

I mean, Red Boy, aka Hong Hai Er, aka, Kougaiji (YES, Saiyuki fans, THAT Kougaiji), is basically a fan fic backstory for the Hindu figure named Sudhana, the assistant to Avalokitesvara (aka Guanyin's original Hindu MALE self). As far as Hinduism had been concerned, Avalokitesvara always had Sudhana as assistant.

Watching OSP's series hits different after watching Monkie Kid

Piggy's position in Heaven Court was "Marshal of Celestial Dome", commanded a space-faring fleet of 80,000+ men. Sandy was "Curtain-Lifting General", commander of Jade Emperor's closest contingent of elite bodyguards.

Hearing this, it makes me wonder why there wasn’t a pure “Journey to the West” anime?

Good question. My guess is that this was such a wide influence that some execs would think it's too cliched even for them, or arrogantly assume that they've refined these tropes into perfect molds that far surpass their sources. Would love to a pure* journey to the west anime though. Well handled, it would basically be the former heavyweight reborn to inspire their successors once more.

It's clearly inspired Dragonball. Goku is based on Sun Wu Kong and Pigsy is Oolong and Sandy is Yamcha

I love how the illustrations keep getting more epic and anime.

Red Boy is one of the few demons that actually had power that was too much for even Sun Wukong. The fact that Wukong outright admitted that they need some divine help here says a lot.

6:58 This really is the first Shonen anime. How often do the villains just kidnap the main characters, rather than killing them when they have the chance like a normal person. The plot armor is strong with this group.
