It's so rare that we get an arthouse style medieval film. I expect it to be good, but a very atmospheric slow burn and not very accessible to a wide audience.

This movie completely fascinates me, interesting choice to have the letters in red when it’s called the green knight, definitely symbolizing something but idk
@bleachedink
2 жыл бұрын
The red and gold scheme is actually based on Sir Gawain's shield, the poem contains the first recorded use of the word 'pentangle' in English and there's about 46 lines in the poem to describe the meaning of the pentangle. Gawain's shield is red with a golden Pentagon symbol in the center, it's an awesome call out to their research and a way to subvert expectation with the advertising.

I've seen the movie three times. I've watched this video many times more. Yet I keep coming back for Ineson's voice, the editing, and the visuals.
I find myself a bit confused after viewing this. It seemed like the video said it's going to give backstory on the original Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but then it highlights details that are true only of the movie. In the poem, Gawain is a mature and respected knight and not an unproven upstart, and his mother isn't Morgan Le Fay but Morgause, another half-sister of Arthur. Gawain's adventures on the way to the Chapel of the Green Knight are also only summarized in passing. That said, still really excited for this adaptation.

I've been excited about this film since last year because it's not some PG-13 Summer Blockbuster. It's an R-Rated A24 film with knights and quests.
Can we just get Ralph Ineson to narrate every and all Arthurian literature?
Gawain is my favorite Knight of the Round Table. Hell yeah
The first time I saw this video, I completely missed that they made Morgan le Fay his mom. I think that's really interesting. In the original poem, Morgan le Fay summons the Green Knight because she's chaotic and wants to frighten Queen Guinevere to death. I think changing Morgan to be his mom gives her a different motivation. Either way, I think she's one of the more interesting characters to feature in King Arthur stories so I am always excited to see her!
That voice is so good I sit through the whole ad and then look it up after

OH MY GOODNESS!! You can’t understand the goosebumps and excitement I’m feeling right now!! 😍
Wow... All I can think is what a voice.
I have been telling friends and family members that I’ve wanted a proper adaptation of Arthurian legend for YEARS. I see this incredible setting that mixes traditional fantasy with grounded medieval themes, and I see so much potential in it. We all know the basic outline. The Round Table. Arthur. Excalibur. Merlin. Morgan LeFay. The source material is all there. It’s one of, if not the largest foundations for fantasy as we know it today. But for as long as I can remember, I haven’t actually seen a proper adaptation. There are elements of Arthurian legend that are dark, depressing, things that would fill the hearts of ordinary men with dread. But it’s in times like those when honor is everything, and the triumphs of knights forge incredible stories. This movie might just be the adaptation I’ve been waiting for.

They made Gawain an unchaste youth instead of a chaste, proven knight. Not the hero of the poem, not the hero we wanted...but perhaps the one we as a p0m0 culture need.
Thank You A24 for giving us so many unforgettable film!!
Why done this give me "The Holy Mountain" vibes? Anyways, this is one of "the big ones" of 2020/2021 I *HAVE* to see in the theater.
Lowery was a student for a time at the University of Dallas, my alma mater, where his father was a theology professor. In the first literature core class at the Catholic liberal arts college, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight marks the transition between Pagan and Christian epic poetry. Lowery was working on a diorama of the film Willow in his backyard when the idea of a Gawain film first came to mind. In late November of 2021, he had a short interview at the University. Much of his creative license for the film was met with criticism by the student body, and there was even a slam piece of criticism published against it (albeit one which lacked obvious foundation, and which was met with a rebuttal from myself). I think the film is fantastic and still manages to capture the Catholic nature of the epic and Arthurian chivalry, despite the fact that Lowery left the faith long ago. I am a huge fan of this film in every way as an artistic expression of one of the most foundational Christian epics ever written.
this has been the longest I've anticipated a film.

Thanks for the explanation
I remember reading this tale in my British Lit class in college. My literary nerd self is STOKED for this movie!!
Ralph Ineson is the new Don LaFontaine. LET THIS BE LAW.
This is what got me interested to see this movie! Whoever came up with this deserves a raise!!
This is the first ad I got on a video that I did not skip and it sent me searching for the source. I'm intrigued.
This is beautiful!
@A24 you all just get it and why nerds like us get excited about movies. Great job!
I am not kidding when I say this is probably one of the best movie trailers ever created. I don't give a shit about kings and princesses, or know what the Green Knight is, but this is the way to get someone like me to buy a ticket. Enough said.
Ok. You A24 guys are not the "average" bunch. Which is a good thing in my eyes. I watched the trailer and thought, "Hmm? I am not sure the trailer was enough to sell me on this movie"... But, it was just enough to entice curiosity. So, what the heck is the Green Knight? Then, this was found... By the 2 min. mark... Say no more! I'm in!
So this came up as an ad with I usually always skip. But the narrator, graphics and those shots of the film made it too intriguing to simply skip. Am very excited to see this.
This gave me chills.
Can anyone explain the function of the three folks in the castle? The man, the young lady, and the old "blind" lady.
This trailer is a good first introduction to the legend, but I'd recommend you read up on the tale before watching the movie. The movie is beautiful and brilliant in its own right, but a better understanding of Gawain's duality in his relation to morality and honour will improve the viewing experience as it clears up some themes that otherwise might get lost.
I'm ready for this cinematography.
this is such an awesome video
This is probably the best trailer for anything I've ever seen.
He is " green" because he is literally green, with no tales to tell. He is a novice, beginner, and so a self apprenticeship is taken on.
