Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Retrospective - Dungeon Design
Ойындар
What makes the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening a fan-favorite? In this Game Retrospective, I explain the unique Dungeon Design in Link's Awakening. I also give my review of the Switch remake and comparisons to the original version as well as comparisons to other Zelda titles (particularly Oracle of Seasons / Ages, Minish Cap, Wind Waker). Tell me your favorite Zelda game below.

Date Recorded: May 2020, (produced Feb - May)
This project was a ton of work, taking much of February through May, and was funded thanks to your help on Patreon. There's a detailed blog post there behind the scenes. I'm really happy with how this turned out so I hope you enjoy it too. Thank you so much for your continued support! :D It's good to be back.
Regarding the sequence break in Oracle of Seasons in Subrosia, I know I'm definitely not the only one to have done it. I playtested it again for the video and I'm certain that there is more than one way to access Unicorn's Cave before Dancing Dragon Dungeon. This stuff always fascinates me. Let me know in the comments if you tried anything similar in Oracle of Seasons or a game in general, I'd love to hear your stories.

This was really fun to watch, thanks for making the video! As someone who's never played a Zelda game, your take on the design aspects of what made this particular game was very interesting. I think these games played in early childhood actually have a lot of influence on what games a person goes on to enjoy later. The first games I played were Age of Empires and Heroes of Might and Magic II, and ever since, strategy games have been a big thing for me. I also owned a GameBoy, but I only played Pokémon on it, and never actually tried anything else. So, not having played Zelda, I never got big into adventure games, and I think it also delayed my entry into RPGs, which only really started with Dragon Age many years later. Anyway, this made me want to watch more of your retrospective videos, so I do hope you keep 'em coming (and I'll go check the existing ones out, of course!) Oh, also, I think I'm supposed to write "First!", right?
I could listen to Zelda dungeon deconstruction all day. Such great design, and great analysis. I very much like the inclusion of Twitch vod, so we see your live reaction.
Wonderful watch! So often we just say "Zelda dungeons are awesome!" without really knowing the how or why. Breaking it down and analyzing just what creates that magic gives me a whole new level of appreciation for Zelda dungeon design.
I really like the breakdown of the dungeon design and comparison to other dungeons throughout the series. The analysis is interesting and the inclusion of screenshots of the other dungeons was a good touch (editing in general was on point). I'd love to see more in a similar style so a Minish Cap retrospective sounds like a great idea to me!
Great video, the dungeon design part was really interesting!
I thought looking specifically at what makes Zelda Dungeons so iconic was a good choice as I feel like I am much more interested in that aspect of it than if the video was about just "is this remake a faithful copy-paste/good game?" video. There are dozens of them that just do that and since I don't own a Switch, and would otherwise not be interested in buying this version of the game myself, a retrospective on why the franchise as a whole is generally rewarding in its dungeon design was a unique take that makes this video worth seeing.
Funny... I just thought of you while playing AOE and how I followed your streams religiously on a schedule. And here you are. Glad you're still around. Take care.
Great work! It's been too long since I had a new Resonance22 video to watch on youtube, but the wait was worth it. 😁 This makes for a worthy addition to your retrospective series for sure.
Ayy, good video Res, Zelda dungeon design is always a super interesting topic and breaking its dungeon design down succinctly is quite the task. Just a note tho; the game audio sometimes drowns out your voice so watch for that.
Loved the new video res. Keep it up!
nice vid Res, filing this in the if I ever get a switch folder
LOOOVE this game. 2D zelda games are some of the best puzzlers in the gaming world, and this is the clear pinnacle of that amazing genre
woooooooo new Res content in 2020!
Good work. I purchased link's awakening a while ago and haven't got round to playing much of it yet, My sister has been enjoying it though.
I've thought about getting links awakening for a while, but I've just been playing other games on my switch and pc, and I'd be glad to try this zelda game out as my first even though my first zelda game was 4 swords anniversary on the dsi and I know it's a spin off game I believe. Great video and review res. Can't wait to join your livestream sometime in the near future when you have time
8:40 - aLttP used the big key for both "boss" doors and big chests. I put "boss" door in quotes, since it wasn't ALWAYS right before a boss fight - for example in the Thieves Den, the boss door is right after the first four rooms, and the boss room is just open right away.

Hi Tables, I really appreciate the helpful feedback! :D That is a good catch and I've fixed that part of the video now for everyone. I meant to say that the Big Key was first used exclusively for boss doors in Link's Awakening but I made a mistake in the script, so I have edited that specific section out. I hope the rest of the video was enjoyable. Cheers
