Kiki was made with Avatar the Last Airbender as inspiration, and her mother was voiced by Korra’s voice actor. It’s a great homage to Avatar 😁

And Fred Tatasciore, who played Keyleth’s father, seemed like he was doing his best impression of Tenzin, Korra’s mentor.

when inspiration goes full circle
Keyleth's mom never returned from her Aramente. One more reason Keyleth is afraid.
Sam Riegel does not miss Keyleth’s people are the Ashari, a society of those that worship and seek to protect nature in all its forms. They are divided into four tribes, each one guardian a gateway to another plane of existence: earth, fire, air, and water. Should the gateway be breached, there would be an uncontrolled torrent of energy and/or super powerful creatures spewing through, so the Ashari have sworn to protect each gateway. Every generation, each tribe selects a candidate to become its new leader. The Aramante is the pilgrimage that candidate takes to each of the other tribes to be educated, trained , and tested. Only after all the other tribes approve of the candidate can they return home and assume leadership. Keyleth’s mom, Vilya, attempted to compete her Aramante, but we were told she disappeared, possibly at Pyrah. Keyleth also is her Aramante, but got sidetracked by adventuring (drinking and partying…) Vox Machina, sort of like a college student having too much fun instead of studying, only for her parent to find out.

This is the BEST explanation of Keyleths journey I've seen. 👏
The episode title is reference to one of my favorite guest NPCs, Kerrek, played by Patrick Rothfuss, he was a human blacksmith and paladin who helped the crew at one point during the Chroma Conclave arc. While on the show his character grew close to Keyleth in a kind of friend/mentor relationship, so after leaving the show he sent Matt a letter and voice recording for Keyleth/Marisha, as well as a real ring that Marisha has that is engraved "I Passed Through Fire". The excerpt from the letter the show is referencing is the following: "When you make a mistake with metal, you can melt things down and start fresh. It is irritating, and it costs in time and soot and sweat, but it can be done. There is a comfort in iron, knowing that a fresh start is always possible. But a city is not a sword. It is a living thing, and living things defy simple fixing. Roots cannot be reforged. They scar, and broken branches must be cut and sealed with tar. And this makes me angry, as it always has, and my anger has no place to go. It was easier when I was young. I could use my anger like a hammer against the world. I was so sure of myself, and my friends, and my rightness. I would hammer at the world, and breaking felt like making to me, and I was good at it. And while I was not wrong, neither was I entirely right. Nothing is simple. I do not work in wood. I am not brave enough for that. There is a comfort in iron. A promise of safety. A second chance if mistakes are made. But a city is more a forest than a sword. No… it needs more tending than that. Perhaps a city is like a garden, then. So these days it seems that I have become a gardener. I dig foundations in the earth. I sow rows of houses. I plan and plant. I watch the skies for rain and ruin. I cannot help but think that you would be better at this. But circumstance has put both of us in our own odd place. You are forced to be a hammer in the world, and my ungentle hands are learning how to tend a plot of land. We must do what we can do. Did you know that there are some seeds that cannot sprout unless they are first burned? A friend once told me that. She was… she was a bookish sort. I think of gardening constantly these days. I wear your gift, and I think of you. And I think it is interesting that there are some living things that need to pass through fire before they flourish. I ramble. You have the heart of a gardener, and because of this you think of consequence, and your current path pains you. I am not wise, and I do not give advice, but I have come to know a few things. Sometimes breaking is making. Even iron can start again, and there are many things that move through fire and find themselves much better for it afterward."

I really hope Kerrek hasnt been cut entirely, maybe there just wasnt room for him in the Westruun plot and they've moved him to Emon for season 3. Even though they kept this important line from him it has a very differnet meaning in this context from her mother, and I think hes important to Keyleths arc in his original role.
Did you notice that Vax giving Keyleth back her staff was the exact line (and pose) from season 1, episode 1 when she dropped her staff slipping on rocks. He's still got his crush, even if he's acting like a dick. 🙂

The whole soundtrack is amazing. particularly this episode with the 3 sounds wind, pass through fire and the blessing of pyrah flowing together
Well, you can't save the world if you let everything get destroyed in the process. I mean, "Life needs things to live." Anyway, this is my favorite episode.
Scanlan/Sams musical abilities keeps impressing me. Also Keyleth takes a big step forward this episode. She plays one of most powerful subclasses in DnD this episode show us a little bit of this power. Also ATLA was huge inspiration for Marisa when she designed Keyleth.
Sam Riegal is obviously getting a lot of praise for his musical work this season, and deservedly so. But you gotta appreciate Neil Acree, who composed most of the rest of the score. Pass Through Fire, the score that plays throughout this episode, particularly when Keyleth transforms, is amazing beautiful and fits the moment perfectly.

and let's give co-credit on those songs to Sam's brother in law, Peter Habib.
Anna Ripley looked very ragged and quite different in the "present" of the last season after her time in the dungeon, but we saw her as she looks now in both the flashback of her torturing young Percy and when he first listed off the names on his gun.
In game, Keyleth's Mom never returned from her aramente trials (which she is leaving for in the beginning of the episode) Her severed leg being the only thing found of her remains.
1:16 well Janet Varney (the voice of korra) is the VA of keyleth's mom
Matt Mercer voices Trinket. He also voices the guy who Scanlan peed on in episode 1 of season 1. You could say he got his revenge.

Woooooooo! Let's get it! Sooooo keyleth is a Circle of the Moon druid. At a certain level(I think level 10?) they get the ability to turn into an elemental. In this case, a fire elemental.
The woman is Anna Ripley same woman who got her hand blown up, the one who was in the cell in Whitestone, who also ecape in the ziggurat episode and the one that the gun powder merchant mentioned to Percy in Vasselheim.
Her name's Dr. Anna Ripley. Yes, she's the one person from Percy's list that got away last season, the one who lost her hand trying to replicate Percy's invention.
A little bit of lore from the world of Exandria. The Ashari’s Aramente is sort of like a pilgrim journey where the next head of one of the four Ashari tribe, after finishing their own tribe’s trial, must journey to the other three tribes and pass through a series of tests and trial given by the current elder of those tribes. It serves as a test to see if the next head of the tribe that doing their Aramente is worthy enough to be take on the mantle of Elder. The Aramente also serves as a diplomatic journey where the upcoming elder goes and meet with the current elders of the other tribes and forms a sense of comradere with them by the way of the trials. The individual doing the Aramente also have the option to do it alone or bring along friends and allies, as what we see with Keyleth along with Vox Machina. Once they finish all the trials of all the four tribes and gains the mastery of all the four elements, they return back to their home tribe and formally become the next Elder of their tribe... And additional lore drop, here are the name of the four ashari tribes and titles of their elders: > Air Ashari, Zephrah Elder title: Voice of the Tempest >Fire Ashari, Pyrah Elder title: Flamespeaker >Earth Ashari, Terrah Elder title: Heart of the Mountains >Water Ashari, Vesrah Elder title: Heart of the Tides
Hahaha! You had the same reaction that I did when Scanlan started singing. How can song that features the word "outhouse" be so beautiful???
Keyleth's mother is presumed dead. Keyleth said that her mother was "last seen alive" when she was trying to complete her trials, because her mother was also on her own Aramente. Keyleth's mother was supposed to be the Voice of the Tempest, who is the leader of the Ashari people, which now falls to Keyleth. She's essentially a princess who was forced to take over ruling with zero preparation after her mother, the Queen, died suddenly. More information about Keyleth's mother is revealed in campaign 2, the Mighty Nein, but that's all I'll say.
Lol I'm sure everyone is saying it but... Dr Anna Ripley.
4:48 7:50 8:37 8:55 11:15 y’all had no patience for shenanigans today lol. Looking forward to more reactions.
7:03 Yes, Percy and the bags of black powder he carries are VERY flammable.
The creature turned into in the Fire plane was a fire elemental. The show version is way cooler than the standard D&D version.
the soundtrack for keyleth always gets me i really enjoy it
Anna Ripley. same character
Kiki's mum isn't officially dead. She's MIA.
I interpret the moment when Keyleth hears her mom`s voice is her remembering the words, not a literal sound. But "connecting through the wind" is such a cool idea! 15:25 very, very good question to ask! Respect. "I hope season 2 doesn`t end on some massive cliffhanger" - Cliffhanger? In my Critical Role media? It`s more likely than you think! Seriously, this fandom lives on that sort of drama. Sorry, but I genuinely laughed at the moment when Jordan correctly recalled Ripley and described her.... and then totally confused himself with this comparison! :DD
sry if u butcher ur name but cassy ? casey ? always is on the right track have the right idea and then jordan talks her out of it xD so sad every time xD

they changed a lot by putting Kima on the Tal'Dorei council. most people realized that Kima and Allura were (or had been) ... something when they embraced after the Underdark arc. I always got the sense that they'd been together and drifted apart, and then reconnected during the Conclave arc.

Imo they really should have waited until season 3, this is a weird moment where theyre at the site where their party was ripped apart by Thordak all those years ago, and Allura at least is grappling with the guilt of not properly defeating him and therefore feeling responsible for all the death and destruction in the present. Not to mention they have barely spoken to each other so it seems kinda sudden.
when the broom showed up earlier all the critters solemnly whispered as one "death from above".... you just couldn't hear it hehe
