Someone might have already mentioned this but Bebop is a type of jazz from around the 1940s! That's why through out the series the theme songs will be gorgeous Jazz songs by the talented Yoko Kanno!!😄🤩😁

Okay, how this show came about is actually hilarious. they knew the star wars prequels were being made. so in a bid to sell space-themed toys. they made this anime. it was the creators' first project right out of school. and the music is made by a band that was put together for this series. while storyboarding the music was so good. that the creator had to re-work what had been storyboarded. the main focus was supposed to be the spaceships. and I love that it's more known for the music and characters.

@@scottwatrous it really was an era for cool ships. I think outlaw star came out around the same time and Tenchi. but the Bebop ships really felt lived in.

I'm excited for you to watch this one. So Cowboy Bebop beautifully blends Sci Fi, Noir, and Western with a just jaw dropping soundtrack. Each episode tends to lean into one of the three genres (so like this episode was a western). Just remember that we haven't met the full crew yet, so the show hasn't really started cooking just yet. I think it is paced well though. I hope you enjoy!

Cowboy Bebop is a futuristic western set in space to jazz and blues music. It sounds ridiculous on paper but it's just magical

As to gravity, the Bebop has an internal section that spins to simulate gravity, but the bridge part where they're talking at the end, doesn't have gravity. The Bebop herself is actually an old fishing boat- and it can land in water.

This series is PERFECT! Hope you enjoy.

GODDAMN ! YOU'VE NEVER SEEN COWBOY BEBOP !!!? The legendary Jazzy Space Cowboy show !? (The series dates from 1999, so yeah, the whole series is in 4:3, and bebop is a musical genre that dates from the 50's or 60's, if I'm not wrong, running parallel with Rock'n'roll) I dont know how I should feel about "Know your anime, girl !" (which you are doing right now, thankfully), or actually be super jealous since I would LOVE to rediscover this series fresh for the first time again. If you're not familiar with Shinichiro Watanabe's work (one of the most standout anime directors of these past 25 years), I really, like REALLY recommend you BOTH to discover Samurai Champloo after Cowboy Bebop ! I guarantee you're all gonna have a blast !

The opening theme Tank is my morning alarm. I feel like this show permanently altered my brain chemistry in a way.

You haven't heard of Cowboy Bebop? Cowboy Bebop was a whole bi-hemispheric cultural movement. The characters were popular for cosplay, recognized instantly at anime conventions. They're called "cowboys" because they're bounty hunters (that might be a Japanese pop culture thing). And, yes...there is sadness. Each of the main characters has a gradually revealed background story, and those unravellings are the continuing plot threads of the stories.

Cowboy Bebop has an absolutely iconic soundtrack.

So there's some text that flies by during that dope intro. It gives you an amazing blurb for the show: "Once upon a time, in New York City in 1941... at this club open to all comers to play, night after night, at a club named "Minston's Play House" in Harlem, they play jazz sessions competing with each other. Young jazz men with a new sense are gathering. At last they created a new genre itself. They are sick and tired of the conventional fixed style jazz. They're eager to play jazz more freely as they wish then... in 2071 in the universe... The bounty hunters, who are gathering in the spaceship "BEBOP", will play freely without fear of risky things. They must create new dreams and films by breaking traditional styles. The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... COWBOY BEBOP"

BeBop is a type of music.

The setting isn't too important, it's basically a sci-fi noir series, and it's meant to be familiar but different. As with any noir type of story, there isn't strictly good or bad characters, instead just shades of grey. There is a main character that will get introduced, that you might not like at first, until of course you get episodes that help to explain why they act the way they do. Also, noir stories typically don't have usually have happy endings. "See You Space Cowboy..."

Cowboy Bebop is a classic. The voice acting and music is legendary.

I love your observations about the older art style fitting the grungy world this takes place in. Strap in for a wild ride!

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime of all time. It always has a special place in my heart as an anime that has so much style and substance in terms of the art it displays in the realms of animation, voice acting, and music. I would say to keep an open mind and not follow it as a traditional storytelling show like Edgerunners or My Hero etc, Just enjoy the ride as each episode has its own story to tell. There is a story in all of this but I don't want to spoil it for you. It is honestly a great journey and by the time it ends you'll feel a certain way about it, but you'll never forget it. Can't wait to see how you feel about this one. Hope you enjoy! :D

Also you should know going in that this was created AROUND Watanabe's LOVE of music (Champloo is the same just swap Jazz for rap and hip-hop) the SCORE in this show is a masterpiece ON ITS OWN.

I hope you enjoy this enough to watch Watanbe's other amazing anime Samurai Champloo ( Bebop is flawless, but personally I vibe with Champloo especially Mugen a little bit more than spike)

I can answer that. She talk too damn much and then cuts the video off at the best parts and then talks a whole alot. Yes it a reaction video but keep the video showing while you talk atleast. It's annoying as hell. First time seeing her video. Not impressed just within the first few minutes

You're in for a treat. Loved the show back in the day, and even ended up importing the soundtrack because it wasn't available here at the time. If you end up enjoying the rest of the series , you may also enjoy Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy (same director). Champloo's got a similar vibe (action, great soundtrack, humor, etc...) but in a wildly different setting, while Dandy goes harder on the comedy, plays fast and loose with continuity, has more of a 50's/60's space opera feel, and is just a goofy romp.

Cowboy Bebop's sound track is my absolute favorite of all time. Every year I have a period where I come back to the albums to listen to it all. Absolute bangers all of them! ❤

Cowboy bebop? Your in for a classic. Still regarded as one of the best anime of all time almost 30(!) Years later. I came into this series in my early teenage years. And as a mid 30 year old I can say I appreciate it even more now than I did back at that time.

I know what you meant about the technology comment Claroos. It's like, you'll watch sci fi from the 80s, or 90s, and it'll be futuristic, but with buttons like we used to have. Or maybe with like an LCD screen lol.

So since it's never really made all that clear and doesn't really spoil anything, the show is set in a teeeechnically post-apocalyptic future of our real world. In their version of our world, commercial space-travel started becoming a thing in like the 2010's and in 2021 a hyperspace-jumping gateway called an Astral Gate was built in orbit around earth. The Astral Gate blew up in 2022 and took like half the moon with it which resulted in the earth being bombarded with countless meteors and basically becoming uninhabitable. People fled to other planets and moons in order to survive and now in the current year of 2071 things have kinda settled into several semi-stable societies spread across the solar system. Earth is still pretty much fucked even to this day.

Bebop is a style of music. THis show was pretty cutting edge with it's space stuff and things that look like present day things. Would have preferred if tyou watched the subbed, but have fun with it. Yoko Kanno's songs and score for this show helped build her into a legend. The show is mostly episodic with a through storyline that is hit upon every now and then leading up to the last episode. So the girl is dead. She's not coming back. I forget the time it takes place but it's the future. Cowboys are bounty hunters.

You're in for one fantastic ride. The show is very episodic, but there are some overarching through lines in the plot that you'll catch on to as you continue watching.

I found "Cowboy Bebop" on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim just after the turn of the century. I had viewed Anime fans as: 1) Kids, 2) Child-like Adults, 3) Fans of strange soundtracks. However, from the opening notes of "Tank!" by the Seatbelts, I was hooked. In this first episode, "Asteroid Blues," the three old guys at the bar are "Antonio, Carlos, and Jobim," ex-Gate workers who are standing in for us, the audience. The crime level is so high that Bounty Hunters roam the solar system, since the Police can't keep up. This is a 26 session show that is/was unlike the usual Anime of the time, aimed at adults.

Since there is a Tijuana on Mars, I think they're letting you know it is the future of the Earth we know. Also please watch the movie afterwards!!! 😊

"Bebop" is a type of uptempo jazz

Yes, the world this is set in is similar to The Expanse, though more Firefly.

Bebop is the ship like you said but in general it also a sort of tonal thing. Kinda referencing the bebop movement from jazz, it bleeds into the soundtrack and overall style of the show. Still one oof my favorite shows but I am old and this thing has lots of sort of "boomer" anime vibes to it. Old stuff like Crusher Joe or Cobra. There is a throughline for the show but it is not a structured narrative like lots of modern shows. It is serialized, sort of bad guy of the week, with a few recurring ideas or characters throughout teh whole show. If it came out today it would be an entirely different vibe.

4x3 aspect ratio was pretty norm for anime/tv show back in 1998 when this came out

A lot of the scifi world building is teased out through the series. It keeps you on your toes as to just how far future the series takes place in.

I will say it will be hard given the format of watching, but pay attention to EVERYTHING. Even the comedy side plots, and like....the ending credits.

Claire glad your watching this master piece. Of all the older anime from my childhood this is pretty high on the list of ones I want a continuation of. Even if its a different crew; I just like the environment and vibe of the series.

Cowboy Bebop is a very unique data point in the world of anime. It's so very different than anything else; instead of the usual collection of shonen tropes, it has rich and complex stories and characters. And it takes its time exploring all the nuances of them. At the same time... it's not a drama. It's dramatic, yes, and there are moments of emotional exploration, but it is cut with perfect humor and tense action. The balance of elements is incredible. There is a reason this series has gone down in history as one of the best... but I'm sure you'll find that out on your own. Until then... see you, space cowboy.

I'm interested to see if you figure out what's going on in this story -- what's actually about -- by the time you reach the end. Also, the series isn't the only thing. There's a film that slots in between episodes 22 and 23, and it's a damn fine watch. 😊

It's based in 2071 and it is a noir western themed future. I think you'll like the show. It's not amazing in my opinion, but I'd give it a solid 7.8/10 for story, world building, and music

You don't have a comrade for this one? I hope this is one that Nerdy has already seen because he's really missing out if not. (OK, you said in the wrap up that he's seen it, so good.) So freaking excited to see you react to this series, it's one of the best anime series of all time and definitely has the best soundtrack. I'm not really much of a jazz fan, but I freaking love this soundtrack. And the English voice acting in this series is impeccable, which doesn't always happen, especially in this era. Yes, it is 4:3 ratio, it came out in '98, HD wasn't really a thing yet. This one does get a bit heavy and you're gonna carry that weight. This takes place in our future, around 2070 IIRC. Yes, they are bounty hunters and are a bit easy come, easy go. You'll get to see Earth later. It is episodic, but does have a storyline as well. There are a couple 2-parters, but for the most part, each episode can stand on its own. In this first episode, we're introduced to the Bebop, Spike, Jet, and Swordfish. (Swordfish is Spike's ship.) Plus the 3 old-timers. You'll get to meet some other regular characters as we go on. There's even a TV show within the show. And I already know you're going to end up cosplaying at least 1 person (I could see you doing a couple) from this series because everyone is going to ask for it plus the people would probably go wild over it. I could see you doing a fun crossplay as Spike though as well. Will you be reacting to the movie as well? If so, will you do it after the series or between episodes 22 and 23 where it takes place? Either way is perfectly acceptable as most of us saw the series in completion before they made the movie. It doesn't take away from the story by not watching it or watching it out of order. Some people prefer watching it after because it lets them come back into the world and visit old friends. See you Space Cowboy...
