    If Singapore had not adopted English as the official language, where would the nation be today? Every dialect fighting for their space, Malay vs Chinese vs indians. Business links with the world will be weaker Sri Lanka was a crown colony, equally if not more promising back then. But a series of policy errors, corruption and internal strife did them in.

    @@siopoh1311 大勢所趨難避免。華人自身很矛盾。或者說是人類一貫的心理反應。在意的是政府的強制性措施,而不是真的什麼母語不母語。 有些華人到了西洋國,過兩代就只會英語了。即使是台灣沒禁止方言,也有大量閩南語節目,但也越來越多人閩南語不流利。 就說新加坡,早前就有不少華人家裡只講英語,以及些許全家人不懂母語的。 問問現在的人,多少個在家裡和孩子說母語?政府又沒規定不能教孩子講方言。我看是因為講英語實際點。

    @@aka-bo6ej 這我知道。是蔣家時代。但畢竟台灣地大人多,其他種族語言大體漢化,情形不比新加坡複雜,馬來語、華語、粵語、福建話、印度語。新加坡正式的語文規劃是獨立後開始,方言受限制,教育語文是 ABC,完全脫離漢字。 至於,台灣大體上是兩種語言,華語和閩南語,相對簡單,且所用文字,華語和閩南語大致相同,何況台灣開放後閩南語的電視節目、歌曲大量繁殖,民間閩南語也保留得很完整。 曾被禁止,可是下來的情況,是看自己的取向了。 華語是世界華人的溝通語,大勢所趨,許多家長還是會選擇面對現實,讓孩子重視華語。

    Later on he sucked up to Deng Xiaoping and banned Hokkien. Mandarin, a language invented by Turkic conquerors of China, became prominent instead. Han Chinese indigenous to Swatow also forced to speak it.
