Lee Bowyer Kieron Dyer fight (full Match of the Day clip - Saturday 2nd April 2005)

This is a video recording of the original Match of the Day clip from the day when Newcastle lost 3-0 to Aston Villa, a match infamous for the fight between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer after the third goal.
Yes i know it's bad quality - it's converted from VHS to DVD, it's the best i can do with no effort :)
The Newcastle-Villa match starts at 2:07
The fight is at 12:03
I love rewatching this clip - there are so many good parts, and it gives context to the boiling point that was reached on the pitch.
Newcastle had four decent penalty appeals, and all of Villa's goals are a result of shambolic defending.
Villa's second goal features a remarkable piece of acting from young Toon defender Steven Taylor (at 9:51), who tries to persuade the referee that the ball didn't hit his arm. Alas, his gambit failed.
And then Villa get another penalty for not much - the stadium must've been seething.
The commentator saying "a thoroughly miserable afternoon for Newcastle is completed"... little did he know!
Bowyer asks for a pass from Dyer, and again, and again, and then loses his rag. Dyer ain't taking that shit, but doesn't realise that Bowyer's mental - all hell breaks loose.
Shearer mouthing off at the referee 12:55
And then the reaction afterwards - the hastily convened press conference, starring Doris who knows that Sounness can't be kept waiting for his cup of tea (13:55), and then Gary, Alan and Mark discussing the incident.
Gary's voice breaking when he says "somebody at some stage has got to stand up for this sort of behaviour in football"
an all-time classic "wtf" day, recorded here for full posterity.

This was the first game I saw Newcastle play when I was 7 years old with my dad. Left the stadium crying my eyes out and this old man comes up to me and hands me his NUFC beanie. Still have it to this day and I will never forget amongst the chaos and disappointment this single act of kindness. Stay good everyone

Still one of the most frustrating games to watch live as a Newcastle fan, but hilarious in retrospect. Dyer wasn’t passing to Bowyer all game. Constantly. It was infuriating. The refereeing was shocking in general apart from the two main incidents. Still, Steve Taylor’s red card after being shot by that sniper was v.harsh.

He is now 25 years old and still playing for West Brom. Seriously though, I was at one of his first matches for Villa. He looked 25 even though he was 17, but he still looks 25 now. The ref was biased clearly, both newcastle penalty shouts were clear and Villas 2nd penalty was soft, the initial contact was outside the box and considering Villa had gotten away with a clear push earlier in the game it's a surprise the ref gave that one. I'm a Villa fan btw, but Newcastle didn't deserve to lose the way they did.

kieran completely agree, I much prefer the championship these days, you already know what the top 6 will be come May in the prem, the last 4 title races have been boring, the worst Everton team in over 15 years finished 8th last season, money on transfer fees is out of control, social media has played it's part as well. United vs Arsenal games are no longer special, football has changed, and while you have to evolve and some of the change has been good, a lot of it has ruined the game I feel.

Being a Liverpool fan, as much as I do not appreciate Souness as a manager (he practically caused the downfall of Liverpool), this was not his or Kieron Dyer's fault. This was all Lee Bowyer and if you are a volatile aggressive person, no man management can possibly control it. I think Graeme did well in getting them to make a statement immediately after the game which seems like a no-brainer but was a great piece of damage control that most other managers would not have had the foresight, sense or ability to get done

He was so bad that Souness had to take him off after 40 mnutes, and it transpired that he had failed a trial with Blyth Spartans. Pure Sunday morning pub league stuff!

The first one possibly but would have been harsh, second one no chance , he just threw himself to the floor at the slightest touch and should have been booked for diving. Taylors dive after he handballed it is one of the funniest things ive ever seen but goes under the radar because of other events

Yeah because it's the ref's fault that two Newcastle players started having a Ronnie Pickering with each other xD

Any proper 4-4-2 team would be Lee Bowyer and Joey Barton in the midfield... Balotelli and Ibrahimovic as strikers, Jose Mourinho as coach and why not... Cantona and Maradona as wingers!

Nigel Martyn; Gary Kelly, Dominic Matteo, Jonathan Woodgate, Ian Harte; Alan Smith, Olivier Dacourt, Lee Bowyer, Danny Mills; Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell. That team were Champions League semi-finalists for a reason

Just watched it because of a reel....oh man...good old times!!! VAR would have a full day with this game. So many bad ref decisions. Outcome of this game would have been so different. Anyways, fun to watch it today though. Cheers, everyone!

I remember this match, Bowyer and Dyer fighting with each other, there was no communication between the Newcastle players, they were all over the place and the frustration of that came to boil and evidently two Newcastle players were involved in a fight

Man so much nostalgia. I know there was still a lot of money in football at the time but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as now and was so much better imo.
