Went to school in Wakefield so nearly everyone was a Leeds fan growing up around me! They used to play with grit, determination, bite and tenacity. Truly an outstanding team back then. I echo the sentiments of the fellow above, was an absolute shame Ridsdale messed it up. Don't think O'Leary should of been sacked either for finishing 5th that year, he had some massive injuries to key players & it was just the pressure of missing out on that CL money really.

i remember a moment lee and jonny Woodgate had with the barnsley fans in a pre season friendly. A fan was giving him some stick whilst the corner was waiting ot be taken and shouted at lee "you wanna f*** off to united with ferdinand" lee and woodgate both laughed and lee turned and blew a kiss to the fan. Got a massive cheer! came across as a genuine fella! loved his application passion and drive even as a rival fan. Dont make em like Lee anymore
Great interview @talksport .. Lee Bowyer was class, but he never quite made it on Tyneside mostly because, like Hugo Viana, he was playing in a decent side competing with Kieron Dyer, who was the established number 8. Despite this, he always put a shift in, just like another former Leeds player, James Milner.
Christ… did he manage to tie his shoe laces on his own?
Rumour was that Souness offered them both a square go,
Pretty sure i remember a chant of " he's here he's there he wears no underwear - lee bowyer " . Ref. the court case at the time. I used to travel up from south wales for the Champions league nights and back to work next day . Good times
According to Shearer on The Rest is Football Podcast it had been brewing all week in training. He said throughout the week in training Dyer had refused to pass to Bowyer even when told to do so. He went on, it continued in the game and eventually Bowyer lost his rag over it. Shearer also said in the same podcast that Souness was so angry he threatened to take them both on in a fight at the same time.
I remember that I was at the match crazy stuff
He had that NF look down to a tee back in the early 2000s😅
What happened in Leeds that night ?
Leeds Used to love watching them back in the alan Smith/ Tony Y dayz❤🙏
Agreed with comment below - Bowyer, Kewell, Smith, Keane, Radebe, Woodgate and Viduka great footballers - great team... had other great Defenders too like Ian Harte and Rio Ferdinand too.
Really good player
I was there that day and i was so high up in the stands i could not tell what happened all i saw was bowyer and dyer get red carded, saw it on match of the day when i got in and was shocked and disgusted by them. It broke Bobby Robson's heart. Shame on both of them, i would hope they are now grown men who know better. I was a young teenager and it was the worst match i ever went to because of those 2 refusing to pass to each other. So childish.

This happens when real top players who have premier league able abilitys play in a team that doesn't quite match there own winning abilities and they play alongside at the maximum within the first eleven two or three players who match each others quality but cannot process the idea of loosing more match weeks than winning match weeks and the only reason we don't see it as much nowadays is purely down to the fact that players nowadays understand that anything they do is always being watched so they deal with the frustration in the changing rooms but even then they are not always safe from being watched from a phone recording there actions anyway winner's will always have this competitive fight it happens to winners more often than not we just don't see as much nowadays
