The Bass is the foundation of groove, and the keeper of time and tempo. People think it's the drums. Drums are dynamic contrast. A Bass player (or tuba in a wind ensemble) can drive the tempo any way they want.

JBL's main influence on bass is the great James Jamerson who played on most of the Motown records of the 1960's. Including, but not limited to Marvin Gaye's "what's going on". Check out the bass on that one. This track is one of the best examples of his funk and soul. As a session musician in pre-Zeppelin days, he was always called to play these kinds of tunes in England. He was the only one who could to it. Bonzo was also a Motown fan. It's so obvious. I'm so glad you guys listened to this one!

Great reaction! One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs! One of the things I love is that it demonstrates how this group wasn't just heavy, it was funky. I love that when you hear the slower grooves, you can hear Jonesy and Bonzo playing around in the beat; JPJ was so subtle with what he did on the bass, but it's there. I've seen John Paul Jones in concert and what makes him so good is that he locks in with the drums, but then he bolsters the melody played on guitar and then finds little counterpoints between the rhythm and melody that sweetens the pot--and he does it in such a way that you can hear it if you notice, but it's not distracting nor does it take any attention away from the song itself. It's like tasting a good pie and thinking, "I don't know what's in this, but this is tasty!" And then when the band shifts to those fast parts, they were writing the DNA of Thrash metal and groups like Metallica and Anthrax. The lyrics are a pastiche or a melange from all sorts of blues songs: the verses come from the Howlin' Wolf tune "Killing Floor" and the funky, improvised squeeze-my-lemon verse comes from "Travelling Riverside Blues" by Robert Johnson. With all that said, you should check out Zep's "How Many More Times" (psst, there is a live version of it from a TV appearance they did in Denmark back in 1969 which is absolutely killer!)

Well, I grew up 30 years after Led Zeppelin and I can still tell you pretty much every Led Zeppelin song about 2 notes in. I used to play all the Led Zeppelin stuff on Repeat in the gym and we would play... Who could name the song faster.

The LFR family just dropped some heavy shit explaining exactly why Led Zeppelin was the Hammer of the Gods! I agree with Tim G, Best review EVER!!!

This is another great reaction. Glad you’re doing zeppelin. I’m an old drummer and worship Bonham. I named my dog after him. If you enjoy Bonzo then listen to Fool in the Rain. He plays in polyrhythmic with triplets on the High Hat ghost notes on the snare and a swung halftime shuffle on the bass and snare.

@@Beofware its song and killer groove. Toto’s drummer, Jeff Porcaro said he used Bonham’s shuffle for his hybrid version “The Rosanna Shuffle”.

This song is a bit of combination of several blues songs. Robert regularly would improvise bits and pieces of different blues songs. The fast parts were known as a "rave up" and were meant to get the audience grooving. They consistently put heart and soul into their music to create almost an arresting affect; they grabbed hold of you and didn't let go.
