I was in my early 30s when I went to this show .Saw Zep in great form in1969 & 70. At Live Aid they were ragged BUT the guy next to me was 17 and for him hearing Stairway to Heaven LIVE right in front of you was a dream come true. It was a great moment flaws and all.

I just finished reading Phil Collins book and he talks a lot about this particular show. Robert Plant asked him to do something with just the two of them. And then he said we'll bring Jimmy along. And then he said John Paul Jones will be joining as well. And then Phil found out they were practicing with another drummer while he was stuck in England. By the time he flew over on the Concorde he said Jimmy was already out of his mind and the environment was somewhat toxic. He really didn't even want to go on but they had made such a big deal about him flying over on the Concorde that he had to do it. And some parts during this show he even air drummed where he didn't want to compete with the other drummer who had practiced and was not thrilled that Phil was the second drummer. Overall Phil felt the performance was pretty much a train wreck.

I don't get the negativity toward this performance. They sound the same here as they did for most of their shows in the mid to late 70s. Page playing whatever he wanted and Plant finding ways to avoid the high notes he put on their original recordings. They had some fun for 20 minutes and put on a good little show for the world.

Honestly, I agree with you. I am not a fan. Out of curiosity I came here, and I get a concert that is not perfect but I would say it's fair to say that it's okay. Mind you, I never liked Led Zeppelin. However, this music has a tune, has rythm, has lyrics, the crowd is happy, I can say that there were some esporadic issues with some notes, but I would not say it is terrible. I checked Amy Winehouse's last concert, and that was really sad. This is not sad. It's a rock band performing, with some errors, okay, granted. But it is not the worst thing ever. It is a decent performance. The crowd does attest to that.

For Gen X this was huge. The only chance we got, as teenagers, to see Zep was in 1980 - and then Bonham died. And they said, "forget it!" - they weren't touring again, ever. So - five years later, it was huge that they were gonna do a live set - with Peak Phil Collins, no less. It was really a testament to how big an event Live Aid really was. It may not have been 1972 Led Zeppelin, but that there was any LZ at all was a big deal.

I remember watching this as it happened in 1985, and being a HUGE fan and a guitar and especially a fan of Jimmy Page, I remember it today like it was a week ago! Sitting there thinking “They’re blowing it”! “Jimmy!! You did to much coke before the show”!! These guys are all amazing talents. They’re the kind of guys that don’t have to rehearse or practice at all. They just get together and do it. But Jimmy was so out of it he hardly knew where he was, and Robert was having voice problems, (but he nailed Stairway) Jone Paul Jones was on his game all night…. I’m sure Jimmy and Robert cringed for years anytime they saw this after it happened! Lol. But yea, it really was a let down at the time….

Actually, Jimmy was hooked on morphine at the time; so maybe you're right. During those days people did coke to come back up. Next Tuesday, Jan. 9th, will be his 80th birthday ! And through all the heartbreaks and malfeasance, he's still with us. Such an amazing talent! Last I heard, he was teaching young guitarists. I've read that he insists youngsters learn classical music, such as Chopin and Bach, first, before trying to rock.

@@Peachie4011 Yeah but it was a real bummer on the day because they had been one of the top live acts - they basically started arena rock - and everyone had been waiting all day, for something we thought would never happen, but then it turned out like this. Then for years we all remembered them for this horrible day, not for the giants they had been. That's why O2 was so important; they proved that they still had it, and now we all remember them as giants again. I'm kind of glad they never went on tour after that, because their reputation is secure now. P.S. I think you'll find Plant was clean by the end of the 80's; which is why 'In Through The Out Door' is pretty much a Robert Plant and John Paul Jones album; because those two were clean, while Bonzo was a raging alcoholic and Jimmy Page was a heroin addict.

1st of all. It was the sound at this entire concert that caused the bad recording of this. Go back and watch any of the Live Aid concert and you realize it wasn't that the bands suck. It was the quality of the sound and certainly the recording equipment. I was glued to my parents tv for most of it. Poor Phil catches grief for his performance and that's mainly because the camera guy kept panning to just him and not the other drummer who was bashing the crap outta the 1st song. You gotta give them all credit for even being there and realize how hard it was for them to try and do this on a moments notice. Led Zeppelin hadn't played together in over 5 years up until this moment. Im still very grateful for this and had they chosen to reconcile, I would've been 1st in line for tickets and buying all the following albums. Long Live Led Zeppelin, Rock n Roll will never die. ❤

nah, after Bonham's death that Jimmy went 3 years without picking up the guitar and sank into drugs (which explains his shitty performance in this and other shows from 80's), and the voice of the Robert is still good even today (obviously not as much as when he was young, but still very good) but that day he had the flu, in addition to the cold and the pressure of singing in front of the whole world after years apart from the band

I remember that day in 1985 very well, it was the summer after my junior year of college and we didn't have a TV so I had to listen on my boombox but had to go outside to get reception. Back when I was in high school we had tickets to see them live but then John Bonham died. And now I was so excited to finally hear Led Zeppelin live! It makes me sad to hear so many haters. Yes Plant was loosing his voice, probably because they hadn't performed in 5 years eh? It looked like there was all kinds of stage chaos when they opened the curtain, seemed like everything wasn't properly set up yet and since it was Phil Collins who introduced Plant, Page and JPJ I can't help but think he screwed up there. I think this led to further problems during the set, possibly including Page's pedals. As for Page, I think they were having problems with the sound...sometimes I could barely hear the guitar at all. But I actually think Page sounded pretty damn good, especially considering he plays stuff that nearly all other guitarists can only dream about. But even before I heard them play, I knew Phil Collins was not the right drummer for this reunion just as a matter of style, they should have stuck with just Thompson who was clearly more familiar with the songs and played more within the style of Zeppelin. I love Phil Collins and Genesis, but seriously he was not prepared to play these songs...anyone doubting me just watch Exhibit A (7:45 - 8:15).
