These guys are still unmatched...the greatest band ever!

They were this good straight out of the gate!!! Plant and bonham were 20 years old when they did this album! The wierd sound 8n the middle is Jimmy playing electric guitar with a cello bow. And Jimmy produced all the albums himself

I was fortunate enough to see them do this song live (March 27, 1970, just a couple months after the RAH performance….yes, I’m that old) as the next 17 times I saw them it was gone from their set list.

The video of the live version from 1969 Danmark Radio Show is very cool to watch.

Thank you very much for the tip and this 12' version. I only know the 20' version of the fantastic Royal Albert Hall 1970/bootleg+video, which includes a song medley. Also the BBC session box has a 11:39 version. Great, somehow "revolutionary" at the time, at least for me as an 11 year old. All the best and have fun with good music!!!

I flipping love this song. Yeah, this is the last track on their first album. Pretty amazing that they recorded album 1 only about a month after forming as a band. Clearly creative and gifted, and Page was definitely a genius in the studio. Jones was no slouch either. ;) Definitely looking forward to your next LZ reaction. Very much enjoying them.

One of favourite musical moments is when that heavy, repetitive, mesmerising riff comes crashing back in at the end of song after that remarkable scream from Robert Plant. Straight off the bat, Zeppelin knew how to close out an album with an absolute killer track. And apart from their third album, they did it with every album. This one was loosely based on Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years" and incorporates The Wolf's penchant for playing a heavy, groovy riff through an entire song. Zeppelin were huge Howlin' Wolf fans. And don't forget 'The Hunter" by Albert King. The band loved stealing stuff in the early days, and then having to give actual credit in later pressings. Don't get me wrong, love Zeppelin, but "loosely based" is a new term for not giving credit where credit is due. Physical Graffiti and Presence and In Through The Out Door (when John Paul Jones took over) are better.

@bohunky01 Actually, in this case 'loosely based' is right on the money as far as Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years" is concerned. Unlike "The Lemon Song", which was a direct steal in every way of The Wolf's "Killing Floor", in "How Many More Times" the riff is different and the lyrics are different. It's not the same song. It's based on The Wolf's style of repeating the same riff over and over but the plagiarism part of the song is the "Bolero" and "The Hunter" sections.

Bought this in 1970 took it home and slapped it on the turntable - the rest is history.

Like the other man said. The Denmark 69 show and the version from 1970 at Royal Albert Hall are incredible versions of how many more times with the medley. Unbelievable performances.

John, This is a great analysis on your part. The song, “Green Onions” most likely influenced “How Many More Times”. You caught the pinches of psychedelia in this song that I have missed. This song is off of a ground-breaking album. In 1969, there was not very many albums that was so hard and heavy. It blew away the listeners of that time. The music was so different than what was on the hit charts in 1969.

Has always sounded more 'bluesy' than hard rock.

Jimmy mixed & produced this song. The whole album was done in under 36 hours and it sounds like this! Bonham is a genius on drums & Jimmy with the bow on his guitar and Robert got it!! JPJ amazing on bass-Legendary!! There’s a guy Wings of Pegasus did a visual analysis of RobertPlant’s singing.

Jimmy has that Telecaster screaming ...

The biggest majority of their songs are so great, I like if not love all of them, love more though. These 4 guys are the true & only rock gods, each is the GOAT of their craft, & they melded together like no others.

Once more with feeling: Zep is Blues, Blues Rock, psychedelic rock, acid blues, hard rock PRIMARILY. Heavily spiced to order with folk, rock and roll, and prog-art rock when the recipe demands. Not metal, not prog as fundamental elements however.
