"the obedience of faith" ~John Piper. After so long trying to merge the NT commands with NT grace and faith into a way that is understandable and easily communicated to others, that one statement is a revelation to me and it accords with text such as James "you believe in one god... so do demons" and Paul's "walk worthy" and many others. The obedience of faith is what James was saying when he said "faith without works is dead" or to put it in modern language, "faith without works is not faith, it is just belief" Believe in Jesus does not save. Praise God! All makes so much sense to me now!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! So awesome to hear how His Spirit was working through his servant Dr. Piper to speak to you in that way! One thing I noticed is in common is how bible-saturated both of you are, so praise God

@@jacobwhitus3715 True faith manifests itself beyond just belief. If a person says they have faith and there is no proof of that faith, it is just belief and does as much good for salvation as belief does for demons.

A much needed reminder and exhortation, much appreciated

Excelent teachings. Too bad not enough modern preachers are not interested.

Here's the problem with one-verse Charley's that preach on single verses. You lose the context and you lose how "showing hospitality" fits in with Peter's overall argument and why he mentions it. But if you do expository preaching, that problem is avoided.

He is trying to explain authorial intention by suggesting there is a type of supra intention of all the biblical authors, that intention being “doing all for the glory of God.” What he is actually doing is imposing his theology, a confessional theology (a biblical one at that) as a “pervasive” essential of preaching. Furthermore, he’s confusing what should be our holy desire in all our thoughts and actions, even in our preaching, and suggesting all interpretation of all passages must be at some point teaching about the glory of God. More correctly, in his example from Peter of the command “be hospitable” he needed to first identify what Peter’s authorial intention might be in the context of the entire two epistles of Peter and let that govern what Peter meant, instead of imposing some confessional theology on the text.

Colossians and Corinthians say we should do "all to the glory of God" and "all to the name of Christ". And Romans "for all things a from him, through him, and TO him". Being hospitable is to the glory of God. He's not imposing anything. Everything we do is supposed to be to the glory of God, the scripture speaks all over the place about that. I could keep going, Matthew 5:16 "in the same way let your light shine before others (your hospitality) that they may see your good works (your hospitality) and give glory to your Father in heaven." That is not imposing on the text. That is exposing how everything we do is supposed to be to the glory of God. The book of Peter does not exist in a vacuum. We are to read every text with Bible glasses on.

Also when we read this text it absolutely is backed up by us glorifying God in all we do. Peter just talked about that the end of all things is at hand, then directly into spurring the listeners on which he is speaking to as believers in Christ, on the proper way of glorifying the Lord and n these ways -be self-controlled -sober minded, for the sake of your prayers -above all keep loving one another, since love covers a multitude of sins -show hospitality to one another with out grumbling So we see that prior to saying the end of all things are near he was talking about suffering, and in light of suffering for Christ especially at that time of history, why would Peter encourage these ways? Well for one it is not easy to be all these things while suffering to any degree, and in these actions of believers still doing them in light of suffering they present to those who do not believe that there is something different, something supernatural in the believers as they face has hardships, and is it not the glory of God that is unveiled that dwells in us that shows the true light that we are that very light, Moses came down from the mountain after seeing the glory of God and had to veiled, but the Word tells us that we with the indwelling Spirit live with unveiled faces, which is shining the glory of God. I am always so blessed with Pastor John Piper in his exulting of the great God and Jesus we serve, very few men really show they honour Christ and respect His words in the scriptures, all scripture is God breathed and for exultation, exhorting, rebuking, teaching, and all for the glory of God, that is one fact especially in light of sharing the gospel at any given point no Christian should let go of, cause if it is not the glory of God piercing through your very being in light of His grace then there is no value in what comes out from your mouth, and you have shown that you do not really know Him, and His will is that we would know Him, and in all we do show the glory of God that has saved us from the darkness and brought us into His marvellous light 🙏😇🙌🏼

@@CH-xt4cr As I said, even our preaching should be to the glory of God, motivated by Him and for His glory. However, that does not entail that in every text, the a(A)uthors intention is that theological topic. By authors intention, my understanding of this hermeneutical principle, is that it refers to the main idea of the passage, even the book; authorial intention, per se, does not refer to the authors’ motivation or goal, but his subject matter.

@@juddlevirs765 I reviewed some general introductions on I & II Peter and neither mentioned Peter’s main purpose or theme was “doing all for the glory of God.” (See my earlier comment to “@CH” for some further explanation of what I understand authorial intention to mean.)
