Lebanon: Extreme Poverty, Corruption and Soaring Inflation | Middle East Documentary

Long considered the Switzerland of the Middle East, Lebanon is now going through the worst economic crisis in its history. 80% of the population lives below the poverty line. In one year, food prices have jumped 500% due to galloping inflation.
For Riad, who runs a grocery store in the suburbs of Beirut, business has become hellish. Every morning, calculator in hand, he changes the labels of his products according to the day’s exchange rate. An operation all the more complex as his store is plunged into darkness, due to lack of electricity. The Lebanese government no longer provides more than two hours of electricity per day in the country. It is impossible for the population to heat, light or use their refrigerator. Taking advantage of the situation, a network of private generators has emerged.
The Lebanese pound, the local currency, has lost 90% of its value. The only ones to get away with it are those who are paid in dollars. The greenback, which is exchanged for a fortune against the local currency, has given birth to a new privileged social class in the country. A salesman in an international pharmaceutical company, Joseph lives like a king in a ruined Lebanon. Thanks to his new purchasing power, he repaid his house loan in two months, instead of… twenty years!
In a bankrupt state, plagued by corruption, six out of ten Lebanese citizens now dream of leaving the country. In Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, Mohammed and his son left by sea to reach Germany. Although their trip was cut short off the Turkish coast, the young father is still ready to take all the risks to reach the European El Dorado.

Dont go to America, England, Canada or Australia expecting a better life as a low skilled migrant earning minimum wage. Your large family will still be in a 2 bedroom unit and that's if you are lucky enough to find a rental! Strong competition for rentals everywhere and rent prices are high and minimum wage won't feed your large family. Not everyone in the Western world is rich, many are struggling living in cars and tents.

Many people think the grass is always greener on the other side. I have alot of educated friends that moved to Canada, New Zealand and Switzerland on work visa cos the wages there was good but the cost of living there was so high, they couldn't afford luxuries they could afford in South africa. We have the 2nd lowest cost of living and people still complain.

*_ And here is why (Palestinians as usual screw everything they go near) _* Following Jordan’s defeat in the Six-Day War and loss of control over the West Bank, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) began to launch attacks from Jordanian territory. These provoked Israeli counterattacks, threatening the peace King Hussein hoped to achieve with Israel. PLO head Yasser Arafat ignored Hussein’s warnings and hoped to gain control over Jordan with the support of Egypt and Syria. Fighting between Jordan’s army and the PLO began in November 1969, but Hussein hoped to avoid an escalation. The Palestinians gradually built up what amounted to a state within the kingdom. They controlled the refugee camps, smuggled in weapons that they openly brandished, ignored officials of the Jordanian government, and undermined Hussein’s authority. The king attempted to negotiate an understanding with the Palestinians, but they were unwilling to compromise and defied his authority. The final straw for Hussein occurred when Palestinian terrorists from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) flew three hijacked planes to Jordan on September 6, 1970, and blew them up on the 12th after releasing the passengers. From that point on, Hussein’s forces increasingly clashed with the Palestinians, who were openly trying to depose him. He declared martial law on September 16 and deployed his troops to Palestinian-controlled areas. The Israelis were naturally alarmed by a conflict not far from their borders and were worried that a PLO takeover of Jordan would pose a grave threat to their security. The United States and Great Britain were also concerned by the developments because King Hussein was viewed as a pro-Western moderate in the region, whereas the Soviets backed the Syrians and Egyptians. The United States was also concerned about the possible intervention of Syria or Iraq. The State Department incorrectly assessed that Iraq was more likely to back the Palestinians. Instead, on September 19, Syria sent tanks to Jordan to support the Palestinians. But these were not supported by the requisite air forces, which were held back by their commander Hafez Assad. Hussein was so afraid of being defeated that he asked the British on September 21 to intervene and to contact Jerusalem to request help from the Israelis. The British decided, however, that Hussein’s regime was “not worth prolonging” and passed the king’s request to the United States. At 3 a.m. on the 21st, the king called the U.S. ambassador in Jordan and asked him to send an urgent message to the president. “Situation deteriorating dangerously following Syrian massive invasion…. I request immediate physical intervention both air and land as per the authorization of government to safeguard sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Jordan. Immediate air strikes on invading forces from any quarter plus air cover are imperative.” Hussein requested that the United States launch air strikes to support his forces. President Nixon moved the Sixth Fleet closer to Jordan but preferred to have Israel intervene. On September 20, National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger informed Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Yitzhak Rabin that Hussein wanted Israel’s air force to attack the Syrians and later told Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir that the United States “would look favorably upon an Israeli air attack.” Israel did not attack but demonstrated its willingness to intervene by sending troops to the border with Syria and fighter planes over Syrian tanks in Jordan Hussein was prepared to accept the Israelis’ help, but his troops rallied and drove the invaders out before it became necessary for Israel to join the fight. After Hussein’s forces repulsed the Syrians, they turned on the PLO, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians and forcing thousands more to seek refuge in Syria and Lebanon. Most of the Palestinian leadership, including Arafat, wound up in Lebanon, where they soon set about undermining the central government of that country. A ceasefire was signed on September 27, 1970, in Cairo during a meeting of Arab leaders attended by Hussein and Arafat. The terms included “withdrawal of both army and Fedayeen forces from Amman, release of detainees, return of military and civilian conditions in other towns to what they were before the crisis, restoration of security responsibility to the police and an end to the military government.” The events in Jordan came to be known among Palestinians as “Black September.” The fighting had several significant repercussions: Israel’s willingness to come to the king’s aid, albeit out of self-interest, created warmer relations between Hussein and the Israeli leadership, which facilitated periodic secret meetings to try to make peace. Jordan has never again been involved in military action against Israel. Israel’s willingness and ability to defend a U.S. ally demonstrated its strategic value to the United States. The flood of Palestinian refugees destabilized Lebanon as the PLO created a state within the state, which later contributed to the Lebanese civil war and the first Israeli-Lebanon war. By not providing air support Assad doomed the Syrian invasion, and the humiliating defeat paved the way for him to seize power. The crisis in Jordan had prompted Nasser to call a meeting in Cairo of the Arab heads of state. During the talks, Nasser died of a heart attack and was replaced by his little-known vice president, Anwar Sadat. So, what’s the Moral of this story................?

What is even more troubling is that these economic troubles that I am seeing in pockets around the globe are actually the tip of the iceberg. Something is coming that will surpass these but will be global. Nation after nation is emerging and the fact is that they have been in trouble for years. It's just that the cracks are becoming more and more obvious to onlookers. Live frugally, spend wisely, and save as much as you can as often as you can. Above all, strengthen yourself internally. @@kauaakauraisa1375yeah I think those people especially those Christian in Lebanon has repented and following ‘the one true god’, so why aren’t they living a better life than this life that they’ve been damned to by the corrupt government? Your comment I presume will only start a comment war but it will not help those in Lebanon who are suffering. There is no one true god as different religions exist, flat out stating what you personally believe in is selfish and wrong. If God loves everyone, then God will allow different believes that honour their name/names. Exclusion of others just because they’re not the same as only cause chaos and violence. Therefore you making such a bold statement that will offend many people only contributes to what God wants from Humanity in a negative way. If you’re truly Christian and not just an internet troll, I urge to be more mindful that different opinions exist/are allowed and that respecting them is the first thing you need to acknowledge as a truly good hearted person. I have nothing against Christianity, but these flat out statements does nothing but divide people.

@@anarchy_79wdym, most* of Europe is helping out Ukraine and so is USA… sort of. China and India remains impartial, but that’s because they have a lot to gain from stating neutral and friends w/ Russia (but a lot to lose if they became enemies). I assume it’s the same w/ India, but all I know is that China heavily does things for personal gain (personal as in the country). It doesn’t care if another suffers, unless it makes them look bad. China is a very cautious and strategic country (compared to others) and only meddle with things when their own economy is suffering bc of it or they can gain smth out of it. The Middle East has been fighting w/ each other since idk how long, yet china rarely involves as it knows that all of them have oil to give (or other material to give) so picking a side would mean no trade from the other. The funding to most African country was also very strategic and so are the funding towards SEA countries. China is quite frankly, buying trust and recognition. Not everything has to be physical to have importance. Another example is it’s ‘threats’ towards Taiwan, trying to scare Taiwan (well, I think the actual target is USA). It hasn’t and will probably never actually attack Taiwan as long as USA’s behind them, because it knows if they laid a finger on it they would receive huge backlash and the economy would crumble, plus the relationship between USA and China is delicate enough and can break @ any moment. (It’s one of those, ‘I disagree with you and I hate everything you stand for, but you’re beneficial to me so let’s be friends’ relationships). At the end of the day, bad things will always happen, we can try our best to make things better but sadly it’s mainly up to those at the top…let’s just hope for a world with as much peace as possible if world peace cannot be possible.

Lebanon is a prime example of the inability of democracy to work where people vote based totally on identity instead of issues and competence. Cooperation on basic civic issues that affect everyone is next to impossible when everyone hates everyone else not in their religion or sect. In Lebanon they haven't done a census in decades out of fear the new numbers would upset the delicate political balance.

Not thinking much about it, I put my bag in the trunk. It was the holidays and my bag was full of my best clothes and shoes. As we drove he told me how resourceful Lebanese people were. The ongoing civil war had destroyed the power grid so people figured out how to steal from the grid. He said there was little food and he blamed the Christians and the Jews. When he dropped me off, he took off so fast I never even got a chance to walk to the back of the car to get my bag from the trunk. Even tho the cabs at the train station required a special permit, the cab co was sure this guy was 'rogue' and he was never found. 40 years I'm seeing the same issues!

The 1975 civil war wasn't a good idea. Killing your neighbors turns out to not be as much fun as it once sounded. Letting Palestinian militants into Lebanon also wasn't too bright. The concept that a people share the same religion as you so therefore they share your values doesn't seem to be too bright. Letting people who love to fight, fighting is all they know, into your country and they then start causing trouble shouldn't have been a surprise. Before 1975 Lebanon was very Western and doing extremely well. But the Lebanese people decided to move toward religious war and chaos. Let's be clear, there are still many Lebanese living well in this created chaos. It's the people who have allowed themselves to be manipulated who are the cause.

When this man is the head of a powerful corrupt militia, an Ally of the group labeled by the West as a Terrorist group, yet he is never labeled as such. When this man is giving government positions based on loyalty to himself not the nation, when an illiterate idiot gets promoted to a parlaiment member or minister and can steal from the people as a result, but encouraged to take all they can. When this one man, the Godfather of corruption has been destroying Lebanon for 30+ years under Western protection... Type in Lebanese weddings because these always come up as the most over the top events. Fire works, helicopters, paying for premier ballet companies to dance at the event, $50,000 of flowers shipped in from overseas........It's crazy.
