Leaving Roundabouts UK - Left or Right Lane?

If you have two lanes to choose from, should you choose the left or right lane when leaving a roundabout? In a previous video I demonstrated leaving in the left lane and some people commented that it would have been better to leave in the right. In this video I explain why I chose the left lane.

I move across but todays was a mess on Bradford road exit off off M62 on 5 lane major roundabout. . Screwed up. Tracking correct lane under over head signs. Too easily messed up new roundabout

    Really great video Richard! - I often find on big roundabouts where you need to progressively move over lanes, the lane you're in often splits into 2. Then you can just choose which split to follow without having to change lane.

I knew that I had to switch lanes and kept getting better the more times I was accustom with that route. But I always had to leave a different exist cos the stupid sat nav was telling me go ahead... then miles down the road to come back again there and try again.

    Hi C D,, this video shows that you do in fact change lanes within the roundabout!, between the exit before and the entry after all before you reach the exit that you want, this is consistent with the concept that it is always best to use the left hand lane whenever you can!, otherwise it is important to select the appropriate lane to start with and stay in it, only changing lanes within the roundabout in those zones of 'safety' between exits and entries, thus entering a roundabout with two lanes in the left hand lane , then choosing to take a later exit, do not cross over to the right hand lane as soon as you enter in the left lane, as you so clearly demonstrate the same protocols apply when exiting. Cheers, Richard.

    Tough call that one - looking at 8.38, I'd have left it until 1pm position to move out of right lane. I must say also, I'm not comfortable with when road layout people mess about with road markings that differ from what has been accepted as correct driving (ie making multiple lanes turn left or right at roundabouts) Ok for locals but heavy traffic often has cars etc covering road markings and it can get pretty hairy when other cars are seemingly not moving where you might expect them to. Great vid

    The road infrastructure was never designed to carry this amount of traffic, hence mind reading skills are a huge bonus combined with defensive driving! The problem I have noticed with this video's final example is that if you intend to turn right at the roundabout, say 3rd or 4th exit, so you start in the right lane and then gradually move yourself in to the adjacent left lane, the video doesn't show the vehicle indicating to change lanes. If the vehicle did indicate left to move to the left lane, then vehicles waiting to enter the roundabout could interpret this as the car leaving the roundabout at the next available exit, thus pulling on to the roundabout in front of you. If you don't indicate left to change lanes then the other cars on the roundabout could be 'cut up" by you changing lanes in front of them, so you can't win either way. You have to adjust your own driving according to other road users too, often people ignore or don't know the laws so drive incorrectly. There have always been bad drivers on the road, but over the last 20 years I have noticed a huge increase. The standards of the driving test have been lowered and parts removed, increased traffic and people not use to driving on British roads hasn't helped the situation. I'm not knocking this video but simply pointing out a reality, as this guy does make good and useful content.

    In my city people tend to exit in the lane they started in. Other drivers know this and occasionally they try to merge parallel to the cars already on the roundabout. You can easily see how it can be dangerous. Also you may find interesting that it is perfectly legal to start in the first lane and go around the roundabout, although, obviously, it's not good practice. What I find tricky is how to show that you are changing lane without making it look like you're exiting. Changing lane without signaling wouldn't always be safe and expected. Thanks for the upload!

    Google Street View is a life-saver for me. I look at routes, see where any big, multi-lane roundabouts are and use the photos to see exactly where the lanes and exits are in advance of traveling, so by the time I get there I know which lane to be in on approach and where if at all I need to change lanes before the exit. Nothing gives me more anxiety than approaching a multi-lane roundabout I don't know.

    The collision in kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZh8q81-nKrOd6Q.html from Rachael, 9 minutes 7 seconds in, is directly relevant to your advice here and would probably be of interest to you. I'd be interested in any comments you have on it! It involves a situation similar to that you show here, with a 2-lane exit straight ahead on a roundabout where both lanes entering the roundabout can go straight. A car slides from the right lane to the left as you recommend in this video, failing to notice that Rachael, the dashcammer, is zooming along the outside lane in an attempt to overtake her (I think she's probably in the front car's blindspot) and is now committed to an attempt to pass her on the left. The two collide. Insurers allegedly took the view that this was 100% the fault of the car that slid to the left lane when exiting. Your comments that "cars don't often pass on the left of a roundabout because they're expecting cars to change lanes as they leave because it's normal" are amusing in the context of that crash; the thing you say doesn't often happen is precisely what happened there and the driver who attempted the pass is in the comments protesting that she couldn't possibly have foreseen the lane change! I think I take the view that doing what you suggest here is risky in case I have similarly missed (or misread the intentions of) a Rachael who's planning to speed up in the left lane to try to undertake me as I leave! I'm inclined to only take the approach you suggest when leaving onto an exit to the right that I *have* to enter in the right lane to take, where there's less possibility of someone in the left attempting to pass me.

    One thing about UK roundabouts is the unnecessary blinking to indicate you stay in the roundabout and then flipping the indicators. Here in Finland we use no blinkers when we enter and only indicate when we are going to leave.

    Everyone seems so obsessed with avoiding traffic to the point they end up just sticking to the right until it’s the right that ends up backed up. At sequences of several roundabouts and especially at temporary lights I end up skipping so much traffic by sticking to the left.

    Got one question here - Say if you do take the left lane on approach for the first example, then taking the third exit past 12 (I see roadsign saying that you can use both lane on approach), do you still need to signal right on approach? Or just no indication? (Feel weird to signal right using left lane, but the exit is past 12) I have got a similiar sitaution in my area, would really appreciate your help!

    I passed in a small town with no roundabouts like this so question... if I'm taking the 4th exit then I'm indicating right on approach and right around until I pass the exit before the one I'm leaving on.... but what do I then do about signalling if I'm moving over to the next lane after each exit? Because I'm indicating right but moving left?

    One thing I'd like to add to this. If you are relying on Sat nav for directions on an unfamiliar route, take it's audio instructions as well as thumbnail diagram of the lane configurations with a pinch of salt. They can either be misleading, incorrect or ambiguous. Better to rely on signs and road markings. Also, any time I am going to do an unfamiliar journey in will research in advance via Google Earth by zooming in on places such as roundabouts as well as using Street View to gain a better understanding of the lane configurations. Though with an open mind that it might be differ when I actually get there.

    @@ConquerDriving Hello Richard. Hope all is well in Colchester. Greetings from Canterbury. Ah yes, I remember now during a previous dialog that you turn off your Sat nav sound. I keep my sound on but have learned to ignore it in certain situations. Of course, actual road signs and markings will always take precidence and if necessary, go in the wrong direction if it's correct from a driving point of view, as that's the safest thing to do. One can always correct later.

    I have almost got to legal driving age but after doing a YoungDrive experience, your videos are really great and help me understand manual cars a lot more. One thing about roundabouts though, what if there are 2 exits before the one opposite you and you want to take the 2nd one that is technically to the left? Do you signal left when you enter as it is on your left or do you not signal until exiting since it is the second exit? Thank you 👍

  • @ConquerDriving

    @ConquerDriving

    You have to be flexible with signalling. If you think it's helpful then use it but if it's misleading then it's better not to signal. No signal is better than a misleading signal. In these situations I try to use my position and speed as best as I can to signal my intentions.

  • @zoezebra4013

    Hi Richard, great video, as always, and explains lots of things. But here’s my concern/question that I don't think has been fully covered yet and I appreciate if you could maybe even do a separate video on it as I think it’s one of the most difficult situations on a roundabout that I am still uncertain about. Assuming we are entering roundabout from dual carriage way with 2 lanes and turning right. We take the right lane and enter the internal lane on roundabout. So similarly as you pictured. And there’s another car entering the roundabout from the left with intention to go straight - taking the same exit as we. He can take the outer lane on the roundabout. So far so good. However, the road on the exit is just one lane road. So number of questions in my head - surely he is ok to enter roundabout as he is taking a different lane. If he is slightly ahead of us, we can slow down to let him exit first, that’s fine. The biggest problem is if he is just behind us or in the blind spot. Who has priority to leave? Should he slow down and let us through? Or we should speed up, or skip the exit? And I’m kindof interested more from perspective of a driver who does want to leave roundabout on that particular exit, not necessarily skip it and go with the next one like you potentially could on the exam. Unless answer is simple (is it?) video would be great

  • @ConquerDriving

    @ConquerDriving

    When you are on the right lane of a roundabout, cars should not enter the roundabout next to you, they should enter behind you. If they try to pass on the left (which is dangerous) do what you can to avoid a collision, go round the roundabout again if needed.

    I much prefer to change lanes on the straight, and not on a roundabout. The mirrors on the car are set up to be optimal as if you are travelling straight. What's more, if it's safe to change to the left lane on a roundabout for that manoeuvre, it's going to be safe to move over to the left after the exit. If a car had been fas approaching on the lane to the left it would not have been safe to move across anyway. So, for me, I do not change lanes on roundabouts unnecessarily. I feel it's safer that way as there is less going on and visibility is better. I prefer to pick my lane and keep to it unless it is necessary to move across.

    Hi Richard I have a question. There is a petrol station side road that comes halfway along a 40mph stretch of dual carriageway road but there is a bus line on the left. The bus lane doesn’t “break off” before the junction- it’s continuous. When turning left into the side road, should I move into the bus lane for a few seconds before turning (to not slow down 40mph cars) or shall I stay in the left lane of the dual carriageway and just turn from there and cross the bus lane?

  • @ConquerDriving

    @ConquerDriving

    Personally I would cross the bus lane when it's safe. I think it would be safer to use the bus lane a bit before but I don't want the hassle of trying to appeal a bus lane ticket.

    I thought the idea is to move to the left lane on the penultimate exit unless you're on a spiral round about - the roundabouts with the spiralling lines that guide you to to your exit - but the roundabout in this video doesn't look like a spiral roundabout judging by road markings so I'm confused? What dictates a spiral roundabout from a normal one? Is it the road markings or is it when it has more than three lanes?

  • @ConquerDriving

    Generally speaking, if there are three lanes or more on the roundabout then you will likely need to treat it like a spiral. Look out for road signs and markings though to help you.

    So basically once you are in the left lane you have to exit the roundabout at the nearest exit, correct? Gosh I still remember the time when I flew to the UK to help move my sister's brand new TT Roadster about 400 miles from the dealer back home (since she was too scared to do it) with zero experience driving in the UK. Still remember my fight with the car itself (shifting gears with left hand,) + my fight with roundabouts hahaha
