Leave Your Emotional Support Camel at Home - The Jim Jefferies Show

Комедия

After learning a traveler tried to bring her peacock on a plane as an emotional support animal, Jim explains why that discredits the people who really need service animals.
About The Jim Jefferies Show:
The Jim Jefferies Show is here to shake up the humdrum formula of the political late-night show. Jim tackles the news of the day with no-bulls**t candor, piercing insight and a uniquely Aussie viewpoint.

For those that don't know: A service dog (SD), emotional support animals (ESA), and therapy animals are all different and are NOT the same thing. *Service Dog* SDs are the ONLY one that have access rights; meaning, you can take it ANYWHERE. You can take a SD to any public place, on any form of public transportation, and they can live with you anywhere (even places that don't typically allow pets) because SDs are not considered pets but are rather considered medical equipment. SDs must go through extensive training and must be well-trained, well-behaved, and obedient. The only animals that can be service animals are dogs and, in some places, miniature horses. Along with basic obedience training, SDs must also be tasked trained in three tasks that help their handler's disability ("they make me calm" is NOT being task trained). If you ever go to the store and see a dog riding in a shopping cart while their person pushes the cart, it is a FAKE service dog. If you ever go out and see the dog lunging at people and barking at people, it is a FAKE service dog. If you're ever out and see a dog acting aggressive, it is a FAKE service dog. Please remember that a SD can be for physical or mental disabilities, and that many disabilities are "invisible" disabilities; meaning, you can't outwardly tell that the person is disabled (think PTSD, siezures, etc.). So, for SD handler's, don't judge a book by it's cover--just because they don't "look" disabled doesn't mean they aren't. *Emotional Support Animal* ESAs do NOT have public access rights; meaning, they are NOT allowed in public areas that typically don't allow pets. ESAs aren't allowed in the grocery store (unless the store allows pets), ESAs aren't allowed in restaurants (unless the restaurant allows pets), ESAs aren't allowed at school, etc. The only places ESAs are only allowed in housing (even housing that typically doesn't allow animals) and on planes with their owners. While there are no real rules for taking an ESA on a plane, PLEASE make sure that the animals is well-behaved, obedient, and have basic training; they should NOT be loud, aggressive, running all over the place, etc. *Therapy Animal* Therapy animals are only allowed where they allowed as therapy animals. They do not get access rights to areas where they aren't working, and they do not get to live in non-pet friendly housing. They should be calm, obedient, and well-trained. Any service that claims to give registration for ESAs or SDs (usually for a price) are SCAMS. The only documentation needed for a SD or ESA is a letter from your doctor and/or therapist/psychiatrist. This all about America, idk about other countries.

StrangeDuckling thank you for clarifying this for everyone who can't seem to figure things out. I am incredibly tired of people who take their untrained "ESA" everywhere just because they can. service animals can be and have been attacked by untrained dogs and the last thing a service animal needs is to be attacked by some moron's "ESA" .

John Doe (slow clap) yay. But, you know, people can decide to travel if physically well. Animals don't have that choice (even with a vet clearance.) What if the animal becomes anxious, restless? It's not so much emotional support than it is a genuine concern (if that's the case.) That's all. Just some extra caution for the animal before my own needs. And I'm speaking on those animals Jeffries addresses here- the ones that are questionable; not the ones truly needed for former military, etc.

I wish people would stop using animals to coddle their insecurities. If you adopt an animal it's because you want to give that animal a good life and give them love. Not because you want them to comfort you all the time. That's just as bad as people having kids because they're bored in their relationship.

ASMRyouVEGANyet? I work in a pet salon and I see people doing this ALL the time. Actual service animals from trained support dogs/animals in general are VERY well behaved and get anxiety when separated from their owner, but still maintain composure when their vest is on/they are in public/until they hear the “off duty” cue and said owners take care of them from necessary grooming to vet checkups to diet. These people who abuse the accommodations for individuals with needs often don’t meet basic care requirements for their pets, pets are emotionally distraught when separated because their whole life is this person but they have no training and emotional behavioral training to create healthy mental boundaries, and these people sometimes use animals that have NO BUSINESS being anything other than wild livestock on spacious farms at MOST: a PEACOCK?! They are lovely but need space and are unsuitable for city life. Monkeys are NEVER OKAY TO HAVE they are part of complex societies in the wild and rehabilitation by experts takes YEARS if possible at ALL. They are too smart and too wild, they become dangerous and miserable, they are NOT pets and time after time they have been part of experimentation to assist with the disabled (opening jars, using keys) and it is a SHIT show EVERY time. Not their fault, but they and many other animals are not suited for domestication: injured ones unfit for complete rehabilitation belong in sanctuaries, the rest belong in the wild. And if you are not in need of a service animal but just want to bring your pet rat or husky to brunch and insist on doing so, you’re a toolbox. And deserve a public shaming. Plus take off the glasses Williamsburg. And lose the scarf, you look like the theater teacher from “High School Musical” but fatter and styled by Lena Dunham.

There do EXIST many people with a wide range of emotional disabilities and are on social security disability for such disabilities.. yes.. you heard me.. disabilities.. And in order for them to get from point A. to point B. it is both in their own interest and the interests of others for them to have an emotional support animal. In many states now, public housing allows credits for the upkeep of emotional support animals for those residents with bonafide psychological disorders, including their veterinary care and food. Just like the veteran who was indignant for having to show his physical disabilities because they're not so apparent unless he was in a wheelchair, psychologically disabled patients suffer through that every moment of the day.. Instead, perhaps there should be better health care for the psychologically disabled in our country???? Patients every day have to show their social security papers and letters from psychologists showing they are truly disabled for these services. You don't think that veteran also receives emotional support from knowing his service animal is with him to help him, above and beyond any physical help the animal provides? Having your stomach ripped to shreds from mortar fire, doesn't merely affect you physically, but is psychologically traumatizing to the soldier. BOTH psychological and physical disabilities need to be respected.

The cargo hold is cold, loud, and alien and lots of animals are traumatized or straight up die in transit. If airlines made more effort to ensure safe transit for pets, i bet these kinds of dubious service animal registrations would go down.

If you're just moving cross country then drive, if you live the type of life where you're regularly gone for months at a time and can't afford to have a friend/family member come check in on your pet, then maybe you shouldn't have a pet in the first place. I used to work as a veterinary assistant at a veterinary clinic that also did boarding and people do board their pets for a couple months at a time occasionally. Think about what your life currently entails BEFORE getting a pet, if you move long distances frequently or have a job that requires long trips then sorry but you getting a pet is just selfish. The problem is people don't realize the ACTUAL expense of properly caring for a pet, they think it only entails food/litter and maybe the odd vet visit. I've had dogs and cats my entire life and would never even contemplate bringing them on a plane even if it meant i couldn't go away for vacations, jobs etc.

Very interesting episode, but about 15 years too late in the hotel industry. The issue lies with judges that have actually ruled in favor of "emotional support" animal owners (versus legitimate service animals), mainly because this ADA act was passed without any federal organization to determine if an animal is a legitimate service animal or not. Basically, it is illegal to deny service anyone that just CLAIMS an animal to be a support animal, with absolutely no way of proving or disproving the legitimacy of the animal. So, for the past 15 years, I have had guests with "service animals" ranging from monkeys to snakes. And they are very defensive about it, almost daring the employee to deny them so they can cash in on a guaranteed lawsuit. This issue will not go away until either a federal organization is created to determine the legitimacy of "service animals" versus "emotional support" animals, or judges stop ruling in favor of illegitimate service animal owners.

There is such thing as certification for service dogs. Just because the certifying authorities are non-governmental and are largely guided by experts of their own membership does not make their authority less. It is true that laws governing the certification process are much lacking, but in court the government, as well as many private companies have invoked the ADA's wording, as well as the expertise of these certifying agencies in relation to recognition of service animals. Just like educational accreditation agencies are (to the surprise of many) mostly non-governmental and are largely governed by rules from experts in their membership. The Department of Education recognizes these agencies based on their standards and work, but they are otherwise not subject to the Department's rules.

I do actually have a support animal who is fully trained to respond to panic attacks and alert when I am in immediate threat of self harm. She is also trained to remind me to take medication. She has been trained from a very young age and also does comfort and outreach with others, especially young children with social anxiety. It sounds stupid and crazy, but she has done a lot of good. And she's a guinea pig...

A woman at my apartment complex had a 'support dog'....she let it get out so many times that the city picked it up and euthanized it. She had the dog abouy two weeks before it was killed.....and she had a replacement less than a week after, which was also put down due to numerous complaints about it roaming the area without a leash. So, to be clear, that ^^ should be read as: "sometimes, making an animal an 'emotional support animal' for a person who isn't able to care for themselves....is animal abuse"

I (worked in retail security) got in an argument once with someone with an "ESA" about having their animal in the store. They persisted that their cat had to be in the store for seizures. She said that her uncle was a sergeant at the local police department, and I said, ok call him down here so we can discuss this. But she threatened to sue and stormed off.
