    Thank you so much Jim. No other comedians on television are endorsing single payer health care and its an imperative issue. People like me who will soon die without it are rooting for you to drive this point home. I appreciate you using your massive platform to advocate for a system all other late night comedy hosts fail to discuss or endorse.

    Ehhhm, Bill Maher, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Trevor Noah - has all been vocal on the issue at some time or another... But it's quite interesting that all of them, except for Bill Maher, comes from countries outside of the US.... I don't know where Colbert is on this issue, but his very good friend Jon Stewart has time and time again illuminated the major flaws that is in the healthcare system in the US.... I'm lucky, I'm Scandinavian - here we have a fantastic healthcare system compared to the US..... But as long as so many US citizens are willing to vote on ideology over self interrest and collective responsibility of the society they live in, the US will never get a fair healthcare system....

    GorillaGuerilla I suppose it's more that I see late night comedians defending Obamacare, which is obviously important, but most of them never really elevate to the next step by advocating for single payer. It usually is something to the tune of "Obamacare isn't perfect and has flaws that need to be addressed, but it shouldn't be repealed"... And then the argument seems to usually kind of end there. I wish popular media figures would go the extra mile to reiterate that the flaws in Obamacare can be solved via single payer. I haven't been hearing much of that :/

    Coetzee Jvr single payer would end up saving quite a lot of money actually. The reason is because the single payer, the government, would drive down medical costs. That's a crude summary, but I'm trying to make a comprehensive site explaining lots of facets of the American health care system and soon plan to go into detail about how it would end up saving a lot of money. And it would be more money in the average citizens pocket to pump into the economy as well, which is always a bonus! Www.Analyticalpolitical.blogspot.com

None of us know what the future will bring, if your child will be born health or with birth defects, if that drunk driver will clip you, and smash your leg. If that cancer will strike you down. It's not a choice, to pay for the big things in life, we don't pay to choose, for the Aircraft Carriers, or the Military, or the Police, or a decent education. These are compelled for our own good. So we can have a unified defence, none of us could afford alone. That our streets are clean, and policed. Healthcare is a resposibility we can, we must share, it's the only way we can afford it.

    Did you know that the national healthcare expenditure in the US is about $3.02 trillion per year / 18% of GDP? It works out to about $9,800 dollars per person in the US. It makes you wonder why Medicare exists at all. Doesn't it? If you simply got rid of it and assigned that money to each person as an insurance, you'd not use it all, it is enough to cover everyone for everything (not everyone goes to the hospital each year and uses from the pot). This is called Universal Healthcare, and it's way more effective than throwing money down the toilet like America does. You're spending $3.02 trillion a year on something that only really covers emergencies and people over 65. Then you're supposed to go pay for private insurance on top of that? What a waste of money! Canada spends about $4,800 in USD per person for healthcare and they don't have to go buy insurance on top of it. That amount covers everything. Think how much everyone would save and how much it would drive the economy if the US suddenly had a trillion extra dollars in the system, if no one had to pay thousands per year for insurance, if businesses didn't have to cover employee's insurance, if no one went broke over medical bills, if people were healthier because they didn't avoid going to the hospital due to medical bills, if you had Universal Healthcare. All this could be yours - you just have to defeat the special interests. So ultimately, never gonna happen.

    The US Health care is way to expensive. In Germany there is a book were every treatment is listed and what it costs. A Hospital or a doctor can not change it. The public health insurance is partly payed by what you earn, partly by your company and partly by the state. There are private health insurances but they are not really better anymore. They are only favoured by the private hospitals because they are allowed to pay more.

IT is heavily subsidised for those who need it more i.e. the elderly and children, and there are government initiated schemes to alleviate costs of medical care, but one still has to pay out of one's pocket, amounts of which depend on the service and care received. Canadian universal health care is great. Before 1963 we were private health system like USA. People wanted universal health care but insurance companies, drug makers, and even doctors fought it hard. Then Alberta province said we will give people in Alberta universal health care. Within a few years all provinces followed and a national system of coverage happened fast as it was so popular. It’s when politicians realized the people wanted it badly enough and it would make them popular that things happened. Unify and push say California to be the first to offer universal health care and the rest of country will follow regardless of lobbyists.

    Here's the thing in universal healthcare, living in a country that has it myself: It's true when they say that an expensive operation is free. But that isn't to say that the rest is free. You have to pay a fee when you see a doctor (gov will pay it for you if you aren't able to do so yourself) and you continue to pay a fee everytime you see the doctor or have x-rays done or something until you reach a certain amount. In my country, that amount is about 200 dollars. After that, everything you need to have done is free. By the time you come to the operating table, you have long since passed that limit and the operation can therefore be said to be free. So yeah, we still do have to pay a bit....but yeah, compared to the US: It's practically free.

    According to wikipedia 60 countries around the world have universal health care. As part of the the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ALL UN Member States (including the US) have agreed to try to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030. So why is this such a difficult concept to accept and implement for the world's largest economy?

  • @ErickP3768
    @ErickP37687 жыл бұрын

    Please read the whole thing first.The reason we don't have universal healthcare is because the medicine and treatments are super expensive. So people don't want to pay for other people treatments. But the only reason it's expensive is because the big pharmaceutical companies make it super expensive . And they pay congress not to regulate them but if they did regulate drug prices the cost of medicine would go way down. And universal healthcare would be a lot easier to support. It's the pharmaceutical companies and the Martin shkrelis that are holding it back.

    Tesla Stark medicines are expensive everywhere, why does it work here then? You don't need to think "oh, I'm paying for these bastards who dare to be ill!" you need to think "these people who are sick are helped by the entire country and when I get sick, they'll help me in return" the fact you Americans only think about how you're paying for someone else, someone in need by the way, is a really unhealthy mindset. And yes, America is about as corrupt as can be, especially now, but that doesn't mean you get to discard those in need. Sorry if I sounded mean, it was not my intention, this os just the view alot of people in countries who have universal healthcare have

  • @mjscar

    Tesla Stark while yes, the medical industry is expensive, it has also been proven that the price is ridiculously more expensive in the US simply because there is no universal healthcare system that sets the price, and hence expects each individual to barter. Essentially each hospital gets to charge what they want because they are dealing on a case by case scenario. If all payments went through the government, the hospitals now have to go through rigorous checks and balance that will reduce cost for EVERYONE. Think of it as economy of scale that will not only save YOU money, but also the rest of the country. Even if you want to do it for selfish reasons, universal healthcare has been proven to work all over the world.

  • @theannoyingworld

    Arthur Declercq you don't know what you're talking about. yes medicine is expensive everywhere, but it's most expensive in the USA (as Stark said), and by a lot too. And again like he's pointed out, it's in large part due to poor regulation of pricing in Healthcare in the USA compared to basically all other developed countries. for example, a mri in Japan is far cheaper than in the USA because of their laws that force old technology prices down. No such thing exists in the USA. Just look up the cost of a bottle of something like metformin in the USA compared to all other developed countries. If the government would step in and force prices down, it would be far easier for americans to pay for universal Healthcare.

  • @mjscar

    @mjscar

    Gamer Alike I don't think anyone has insinuated that all Americans are selfish. But you can't deny that that is the most cited reason against universal healthcare. Secondly it really irks me when people think of a country's debt like personal debt. They're completely different and works in totally different way. To simply think that a country with no debt is a better country with a better economy is simplistic and untrue. As long as the economy is worth WAY more than its debt, it really doesn't make one iota bit of difference. Thirdly if you're so hell bent on reducing debt, I don't see you asking to increase tax to help this issue, or ask to decrease military spending which is more than all other nato country combined (completely unnecessary). As Jim Jeffries says, universal healthcare should be the last thing cut, not the first.

    Public healthcare is like insurance where the premiums are paid out of taxes. No one knows who will need it but some will and everyone is covered. So if you're pissed off that you're healthy (!) and others are using up your tax dollars be aware that you might get hit by a bus tomorrow or get cancer and then you'll get your money back. If you don't get sick well good for you. Isn't that still better?

    I'm a recipient of government madated universal healthcare and I'm exctatic about it. One simple reason it's relatively cheap, it pays for heatcare of the more unfortunate and it significantly drives down the price of privet heathcare. If I can wait for something that government will pay for then I will wait for it, if it's something more serious I'll just pay a private clinic/hospital, which is affordable becouse I have option1.

  • @jacobgalloway8570

    I want the government out of everything. Healthcare would be affordable for everyone if the government and insurance companies got thier greedy hands out of it so that healthy competition can drive down prices. Competition makes everything better and cheaper. Any time government and insurers get involved it becomes too expensive to afford and a worse product overall. Economics 101

    Somehow there‘s always a misunderstanding of „free healthcare“. For instance in Germany it doesn’t mean we don’t pay. Everybody pays. You have to have a health insurance. And that covers a certain part of an eventual treatment. And you still pay for medication, at least partly. Nothing is for free...

  • @kenhasibar2450

    Jim Jeffries is awesome - I love his stand-up and his new show. But he didn't mention how any of those countries pay for their healthcare. Yeah, it's free for the sick and injured, but doctors want to get paid too. And nurses. And the receptionists who schedule shit. What % of their taxes or their GDP covers all that equipment and labor and groundskeeping and plumbing and drugs and therapy and malpractice insurance? The money has to come from somewhere. I would love to get those facts. The ultimate problem - and it is - is greed. It has always been. Unfortunately, I don't see it changing...

  • @Savelion

    Ken Hasibar doctors can definitely earn enough in countries with universal health care to afford a huge house and a bunch of nice cars. I think the major difference is the cost in medication, which is much higher in the US than anywhere else. soon as you finally put some regulations on those pharmaceutical and insurance companies the costs will go down dramatically. also, in other countries Healthcare is funded through taxes and sometimes a small monthly contribution (think around €100). in my country for example you can even get subsidy from the government if you are under a certain income amount, they will pay part of your monthly Healthcare contribution (when I was studying I'd get €89 out of the €100 monthly contribution from the government)

    No one has ever claimed Universal Healthcare has no costs. Of course it is paid out of taxation, "Universal Taxation" if that suits you better. But when it is done right, like in Canada, virtually all of Europe, Japan, even some poorer countries, it ensures nobody go without needed health care and meds. Yes, your sore knee will get fixed AFTER heart attacks or an exploding appendix, but that is a small price to pay. I was hospitalized in (of all places) Nicaragua in 1989. I was Tore Up, thrown from the back of a overturned pickup truck at about 45 mph. Compound fracture of the leg, road rash everywhere. I got the initial surgery that saved my life and leg, daily doses of antibiotics to ward off infection, and after 19 days I was able to get on an airplane and come home. If this little impoverished nation can do it, why can't the World's Richest? If we did NOTHING but copy Canada's system, our health care costs would drop by 50%. And the rich could still get their special care if they wanted extras, and believe it or not, they might do better going overseas for some treatments. American doctors and hospitals certainly have no monopoly on quality care and innovative treatments. Just talk to anyone who's had a few surgeries, and see how well they felt they'd been treated. I feel like going to the VA, or Kaiser is like going to Las Vegas, you just roll the dice and hope for the best.

But vaping is allowed as it's considerably safer than smoking and doesn't harm bystanders. Unlike in part of Australia where you can go to jail for owning a vape with nicotine but not for buying cigarettes, go figure.

    In UE peoples pay for medical insurance. The main difference is that is mandatory and the price (more or less depending of country are regulated by law) Now, the main benefit is IF YOU LOSE THE JOBE YOU STILL RECEIVE FREE MEDICAL TREATMENT. If a person need a complicate and expensive medical services that will be done, even that person has medical insurance. You will not let to die. PS eCard is already exist in other country before Germany, Austria for example...but is ok, is not a competition

    Even if America had the best healthcare system in the world it would have to be significantly better than any other country in order to justify the significant amount more we pay than any other country. That's why it pisses me off when people against universal healthcare will compare America to other countries as if it's apples to apples. You can make an argument that America receives some of the top health care in the world if you have lots of money/good insurance but you can't make the argument that we are getting good value in our healthcare spending.
