Interesting comparisons. This series should prove to be quite interesting. I did not realize that Victorinox made something in this same form factor. Victorinox was making "multitools" in the form of their folding knives long before Leatherman birthed the multitool craze. Victorinox was the original "multitool."

@@QuantumPyrite_88.9 I gave credit where credit was due. I stand by my statement that Victorinox was the original multitool. It may or may not have had pliers but Victorinox has made available folding knives with a plethora of tools in each model *LONG* before Leatherman was even thought of. There may have been other makers as well but Victorinox Swiss Army Knives were the manufacturer that made multitools popular. I m in no way poo-pooing Leatherman. I own three or 4 Leatherman multitools personally.

@@QuantumPyrite_88.9 Well not quite true, LM was the first one to successfully mass market them. Multitool wiki has a whole section called ''Before there was Leatherman'' (wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Before+there+was+Leatherman). The most famous was the Barnett tool at the end of the 19th Century. As to plagiarising, there was nothing to plagiarise as all the tools themselves already existed, in fact some of the tools on the Leatherman such as can opener are copies the Wenger or Camillus scout type can opener which had been around since the 1940s. Ultimately Victorinox have surpassed Leatherman in the field of pliers-based butterfly opening multitools too, with the Swisstool, which is better quality and more durable.

@Far North Bushcraft And Survival, Lonnie, the Victorinox Swisstool is by far the best multi-tool on the market. I have all of the tools Felix demonstrates and prefer my Swisstool hands down. WRONG@@QuantumPyrite_88.9! Victorinox SAK knives have been around since 1884. The Swiss Army Knife IS the ORIGINAL multi-tool, and there is even a model with a set of mini pliers that far pre-dates the Leatherman. If anyone did any “plagiarizing” it is Leatherman. And for the record, the Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool) - of which I have one of the first 100 initially made - was patented in 1980 and available for sale in 1983. 99 years AFTER the Swiss Army Knife (the original multi-tool) was invented.
I started my knife-life as a huge Victorinox fan (you know, MacGyver). Then I learned about steels, locking mechanisms, manufacturers, clips and all the bells and whistles and invested into expensive reputable brands. Then I realized I will never feel prepared without a Vic and went full circle back. The quality you get for such a small amount of money is hard to beat!

A file is designed to cut in one direction and a sawing motion is the quickest way to dull it. Btw the best file you'll ever find on a multitool is on the original 1990's Gerber MP. The file was made by Simon's, and is the only multitool file I know of that was actually made by a file manufacturer.
I'm so glad you tested the metal file and saw. Too many times this important tool is overlooked in reviews and tests.
With leatherman or victorinox you can't go wrong, both are very capable multitools.

I discovered the Leatherman's diamond file initially worked well, but its coating soon wore away. I was disappointed by it. I agree with you that the Victorinox tool you used was the best. It's pure quality all the way through, and quality cannot be beaten.

hello felix, very interesting as I always wanted hand-on comparisons of these products. top class!!
Excellent analysis, Felix. You could really hear the Gerber file bite into the screw head, but the results clearly favor the Victorinox. Just one more reason to love this great knife brand.
I've had my Victorinox Swisstool for 15 years and it's still in excellent condition. It is very solid and hefty so I've used it to hammer things many times. I've pried so much stuff I shouldn't have with the tools and I thought it would mess up the opening/locking mechanism, but every tool still opens and closes like new. The Victorinox is an excellent tool and might even be better than the Leatherman.

@@QuantumPyrite_88.9 My Swisstool Spirit (I choose it over the larger Swisstool, after having considered the weight difference - and the tools I'm likely to actually use!) isn't that much younger - and I love it, too! :) However, I found that a multitool is somewhat on the big-and-heavy side for being at hand on a daily basis. It does reside in my EDC kit on the bottom of the backpack I carry around - but I found a need for a pocket knife to be with me all the time, and be momentarily available. And guess what... this means another two Victorinox knives, one keychain-sized for daily use, and a larger, locking-blade Sentinel for outdoor trips. Currently I'm having an eye for a multitool for a lady, but honestly, as much as I love Victorinox, I feel this time it is likely to be a Leatherman (looking towards the Skeletool series here - I'm suggesting her to go for a lightweight tool).
I have all of the tools you demonstrate in this video. Of them all I carry my Swisstool every day and have so for almost 20 years. The rest sit in a pouch so they don’t get dirty. Swisstool is hands down the best multi-tool available. I use mine daily.

There isn't really much left to do in that field, except for making tools one handed opening, they are already outside accessible. The individual tools themselves are as good as it gets. Anything else is really just a novelty - like the Leatherman Signal with removable firestriker/whistle and sharpener, and beneath Victorinox. Having said that I think it would be amazing if they made something tiny along the lines of the Squirt, and something comparative to a Juice, with two alox SAKs as handles, that would be a dream multitool for me!
Again an interesting test. It's sometimes hard to decide between a Victorinox swissknife, and a Victorinox SwissTool. I guess I need both! :-)

Anyone can make a decent knife and pliers, but making really good files is almost an art, requiring perfect hardening and tempering. Look at the file after using it on tool steel- if you see scratches the file is too soft, and most of these are. Gerber isn't what they used to be; the old Gerber files were excellent and the Leatherman has always been good. Never tried a Victorinox but I will when I get a chance.
I have have the SOG, Leatherman, Gerber and Vic Swisstool. I will take the Swisstool over all the others every time. I have had a Swisstool since 1997 and it has never let me down can not say that for the others.

Once again you and your film crew deliver a very good and informative video. This knowledge saved me today since a very stubborn and stripped philips screw did not want to come out. Thanks to Victorinox Swiss Tool X’s metal file I could screw it slowly out. Leathermans metal file is not that aggressive as you say. How is the metalfile on the 91mm SAK’s compared to Swiss Tool X?
cool to have a new series. was it just editing or did you not use the same number of strokes per tool? I assume editing(and was all equal testing) but didn't notice as this screen wasn't full so I couldn't tell. ☺see ya next fri.

Hi Felix, great comparision, and the winner was very clear. Thanks a lot! But I have to say, that I do not totally agree with a tool as you suggested, means a Victorinox with a diamond side comparable to the leatherman. The reason is: according to my experience, diamond pads tend to wear off very fast, if you use them regularly. It does not make sense to me to have a multitool, which should usually last for decades, with a tool fixed on it which wears off maybe in half a year of use. I know many people do not use any of the tools of a multitool more than once in a year or so, and a diamond pad/file would be good for their whole lifetime, but there are also plenty of users which use their multitools regularly, and even most of the tools there. So I would always recommend to keep such a wear-off-tool either totally separate or at least exchangeable. So, my idea would be: additionally to the extra tools for the Swisstool and the pouches for all that stuff which already exist one could also develop some further tools with a focus on wear-off-tools, like e.g. a two sided diamond pad (in two grades, of course), a firesteel, and so on, ... and if required a bigger pouch or so ;-) Best regards, Robert

@bangalorebobbel
;-) LG, Robert

Yes Felix, I have most models of Leatherman's, a few Gerber's, and a few SOG multi tools! I have only one of the Victorinox multi tools which I consider superior in quality to most, except for the overall Leatherman's! The steel used in making Leatherman multi tools is some of the best! It's so good it's hard to make them rust! I purchased a group of knives that included a Leatherman super tool, one of the early ones, and it must have been exposed to salt water! All the tools were frozen in place! I used every method available to free up all the tools including CLR, boiling water, oil soak, you name it! In the end, it freed up completely, and showed no rust! That's the quality of American steel! Thanks for the excellent review!

@@FelixImmler Hi, I'm a subscriber from longtime enough on your channel to be aware that you know better multitools than most of us and that the claim of "quality of American steel" will not fool you nor anyone experienced here. Leatherman steel do actually rust (and breaks!) The Victorinox one doesn't. It might rather bend as their alloy is kind of flexible. To me, and for most of the owners opinions, Swisstools are the best, no question. But I still agree with you regarding the innovation. My ultimate multitool would be a full size Swisstool assembled by screws instead of rivets for the layers to be customizable, and with an available t-fixation-tool like Leatherman implemented for standard jigsaw blades. Thanks much for your videos and tips, may Victorinox hear our wishes 🙏😊

Beides geniale, multifunktionale Messer.
yeah.... you did it! great video! :)

Danke Dr. Brehm!

Saudações do Brasil meu amigo!!!
I knew before you started the test that the sak would win, I wonder why I thought that?

The Swisstool Spirit is not a SAK. If you want to put a SAK in the mix, try the Work Champ. The file is even better than the Spirit.

@@debajyotinath5021 SAK used as a victorinox general term nothing more.

Haaa ha haaaaaa merci bien pour votre commentaire! Super interesting!
Very interesting video, except for the SOG I have them all. And in my opinion the Victorinox is the best by far.

Good choice!
Hy Felix! Also definitiv bleib ich beim Victorinox!
Hello Felix. Sorry for my english - it's poor. Could you record the episode, how to convert the blade in swisstool spirit xc to what is in swisstool spirit x. Regards.

@@FelixImmler ok, all in all i have an idea how to do it. I thought that something else would inspire me, how would you do it. Thanks for answering. Regards, you are doing a great job 👍
Fascinating comparison and very well done, my friend. I EDC a multi-tool, the SOG Powerlock. I have had it and carried it continuously for about 15 years, even sent it back twice to the factory for repairs which were free as it has a lifetime warranty. I own the Swisstool, the Leatherman, and Gerber tools also. I am looking forward to this series. BTW, what do you think of building your own multi-tool by putting together the best components of all of them into one tool? I have thought of doing this. It would require some reshaping of the individual tools, especially where they fasten and lock, but I think it could be done. Best regards, James Bender

Hello James. Thanks a lot for your comment! Your question sound very interesting. I think it is more realistic for me to produce my own SAK version. But if you have good ideas how to improve a Multitool please let me know...
