I agree about the scissors. When I'm in the woods, I use the blades, saw, and even the file. I've never needed a pair of scissors. I don't sit around the camp fire scrapbooking. I can cut anything with the knives. Come to think of it, I've never needed a pair of scissors at home either.

Same, have never needed the scissors. Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, have never used scissors. I already have dedicated gear for most cutting uses, nippers for line, belt knife, etc. Multitool is a backup or used to repair my other gear....fishing reel, guns, camp gear, etc.

Hopefully it will help others to realize some extra capabilities from their Leatherman multi tools. I saw videos in the past where people were trying to strip insulation off of wires with that tool in some really inefficient methods. That’s why I introduced that initial video on how to strip wire with a Leatherman in the first place. You don’t know what you don’t know, until you know it.

Two things I found out about the ST300 that you didn't mention in the video: - lanyard ring can be pushed into the gap between the combo tool (can/bottle opener and wire stripper) and the serrated blade to lock the tool like a balisong knife. I discovered that after my ST300 came crooked out of the box - apparently a common issue that doesn't qualify the tool for replacement. Doesn't hinder the capability of the tool, so no issue for me. Also helps if your ST300 wears in and becomes loose. - due to the large flat screwdriver/pry bar pushing on one side on the locking bar and the other on the plier head (when the tool is folded) all of the tools in that handle are double locked: file, knife, medium screwdriver and awl can't be folded if you exert pressure holding both handles together because you also push the pry bar into the locking bar.

  • @stradostrado

Great idea on locking the tool together with the blade out and the lanyard ring between serated blade and the can opener. It locks the handle tight.

I agree with most of what you've said save for one minor variance: I would absolutely love to see an option for a removable pocket clip (like on the wave/surge) and here's why. The size and shape of this tool make it what I would call a "maintenance worker's tool", and by that I mean a robust unit with a simplistic tool set, not a lot of moving parts and features, and includes the basics tools required to grab and hold, cut wire, open panels, and shape metal parts - nothing fancy, just easy to operate; and bearing the caveat that most things in an industrial environment fall into the category of "requiring real tools" anyways. I compare this to the Surge, what I would call a "maker's tool" - lots more options for various fasteners, different styles of saws, specialized tools for manipulating many kinds of material. I believe that Leatherman has peaked at the Surge, it is really a great feat of MT achievement, but nevertheless suited to a particular subset of construction-type workers (craftsmen, framers, millwrights, engineers, etc). I work for a waterworks utility repairing a drinking water pipeline, repairing fire hydrants, flushing mains, etc. I can absolutely say that in my experience I have tried and failed to carry this tool repeatedly over the years because *I cannot find a way to comfortably carry it in coveralls*. ST300 is my favourite leatherman bar none, and when I wore a batman belt as a landscaper the pouch sat perfect beside my felco holster. But now I find I simply can not work it into my daily carry at work. I wear hi-viz traffic coveralls every day. I do not wear a belt or tool bags, so I have nowhere to attach a pouch, and a 10oz brick in the pocket is just horrendous. Carrying them open in the dungaree knee pocket *sort of* works, but they sink deep and get hung up -- and that pocket is for Channel Lock 420s anyways. If ST300 had a removable clip I would very happily clip it into my breast pocket right beside a light and notepad. I've actually just recently purchased a Bond w\ clip and this is exactly how I carry it. I believe Leatherman would do a great service to, and find a great market with, a lot of workers in coveralls and bibs (mechanics, sanitation workers, road builders, operating engineers, farmers, and us waterworkers) if they mounted a clip on the next Supertool generation. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

First off, Thank you TX Tool Crib for these awesome reviews. You do a very solid job at your reviews and I appreciate them all. Now, I'm a Welder/Fabricator/Ironworker and some times Millwright by trade of almost 10 years. I got the Super Tool 300 years ago. I use it everyday, at work and away from work. When I tell you that it gets abused, I mean it REALLY gets abused. I've not once had an issue with this model or any of the implements. Everything has held up wonderfully. I LOVE it. In fact, it's my right side EDC along with my Crunch on the left. Very happy with this tool. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a useful and reliably strong EDC for the blue collar industry.

I prefer the 300 as my Heavy Duty MT , I work in a Nautical environment and dirty and the 300 being enclosed untill you need to use it keeps it cleaner easier than exposed tools /gaps imo, I carry a dedicated folder so the Knife being one hand accesible isnt as crucial for me, I like not having to mess with bits for common fasteners, my tool is so broken in I can fling it open with one hand, carried a Gerber 600 for 25 of my 30 yrs USN, but now I stick with my 300, I also like my Wave +, Another great Video Ben thanks for the content

Try using the lanyard loop with the wire stripper. With both tools open, the lanyard loop is flush to the back of the wire stripper and takes up most of the gap that you showed. It had to have been designed that way, the tools fit together too well for it to be a coincidence.

You’re very welcome. I understand that the new FREE series has a much better ease-of-use, and it comes with scissors. However, I don’t like sacrificing the serrated blade to acquire those scissors, my personal opinion. I think that if you were happy with the ST 300, the FREE P4 is not going to do anything for you that you can’t already do with the exception of the scissors. I like the ST 300, it’s not quite my style, but it does offer a very good selection of tools that are far superior to those on other multi tools.

Thanks for this video. I found my Super Tool 300 on a trail 4 years ago in the middle of the dirt road. I'm lucky I found it. I used the Philips head tonight to screw a screw in to hang a frying pan better. I use it mostly for pliers and screw drivers. I started watching this video to figure out how to use the measurements on the outside of the tool, but after watching this video, I learned about all the rest of the tools. I never opened up or used the knives, which are both sharp or the file. I did not know about the lanyard ring or awl. How do you use the awl? I might start packing this thing around and use it more now that I know what it can do. Didn't realize it was worth so much. The leather sheath is in excellent shape, too.

They don't even have to remove the driver to add a chisel, they can just move the lanyard hole to one of the end pivot screw heads like it used to be. I feel like they could even remove the can opener/cap lifter (move the wire stripping V to the base of something else, maybe the chisel?) and have another space for something more useful. Maybe then they could remove that driver to clear two spaces for scissors to fit.

I find the more traditional leatherman tools like rebar and 300 much easier to cleanout with toothbrush, pick, etc. after theyve been in dirt, dust, weather and such. i work in woods and on farm. the wave is great but is difficult to get clean and it picks up dirt easily. the swiss tool also is slightly more difficult than the traditional leatherman to clean up all shiny and new like.

Great review bud. I find that leathermans like this and perhaps the Rebar have the same issue, that is the fact that their sort of held together by rivets, instead of the torx screws. Because of this they tend to be very tight and you can't loosen them off via the torx screws

I'd like to see letherman make an online order series, where they offer frames, tools, and so on as a build your own tool. Like ordering a pizza, frame A, B, or C? Then pick tools, and so on. I feel like there is a market for that. Maybe it's just me, but I find as I look at every multi tool its as though they each have many things I want but are all missing one tool that another has. I'd be willing to pay a premium for a high quality tool that I got to custom make.

The 300 is easy to get the blades out in cold weather , the nail nicks on the victronox are not so good in cold weather , the replaceable cutting edges for the pliers are not so good on electrical wire due to the strands of the wire getting folded in the pliers rather than cutting the strands of wire , the 300 is strong and basic , the super tool 200 was very good too , and the blast was out standing ! The Pulse is the Little Brother like the Rebar is to ST 300 , The Core was the replacement for the ST 200 . I have the Super Tool , ST 200 , Core , ST 300 , Rebar looking for the Pulse .
