Aaron does something a lot of other skaters don't when they teach: put themselves in the shoes of the beginner. Aaron's been skating longer than most, but still hasn't forgotten the struggles we all went through, and even better, how we all eventually get through those struggles. Chloe learned super super fast, hope she keeps skating!

Dude seriously, the "pretend you're walking with the board" thing works like magic. I was struggling to just keep my balance while pushing; I could do it standing still perfectly but as soon as I tried to push I'd eat pavement. Saw Aaron mention that, tried it out, and IMMEDIATELY clicked in my brain. "OH, I get it!" Same thing with my boyfriend who is also learning with me. We're both in our mid twenties and never got to learn as kids, so this is all new and kinda tricky for us. Aaron is a great teacher and he explains things really well! :)

Skateboarding is one of those odd sports, people are afraid of "learning too late" or "coming off as a poseur" just by not being good immediately. How seeing someone learning to skate would compel them to think they're doing it for attention, rather than help them and share the fun is beyond me. Everyone had to start somewhere, and most of the good riders started off as small children with all the silly looking multi-colored protective gear - I sure did. Just like riding a bike, really. If I saw a 20 year old trying to learn how to ride a bike, I wouldn't laugh at them or call them a poseur, I have no idea why anyone would. I loved skateboarding because I never worked well with team sports. Skateboarding at its basic sense is individually oriented. You set your own goals, difficulty is relative, you create your own obstacles, there's no "letting the team down," it's all about you establishing and mastering your own accomplishments. For some it's learning to drop in, for others it's jumping a 15 stair set. There's no end to it either. If you pitch a no-hitter or bowl a perfect game, there's nowhere else to go form there. Skateboarding always has you creating and enduring challenges, it only stops when you do.

Bubbles The Puppy I am turning 43 in two months. Skated when I was 11 until about 16 and somehow got of it. Dad built me a big half pipe in our yard. Loved it. Well 27 years later my 10 yr old and 12 year old want to learn. Bought them boards, and bought myself a new one. Went to the local skate park with them and nobody was there. It was great. Couple day later went back and there were about 15 people there. Ranging from 12-25 yrs old. At first I didn’t want to go in because of what I thought they would think with the “old dude” skating. After a little bit I said the hell with it and went in because my kids really wanted to go. Little to my surprise everyone was pretty cool. Ended up talking to a few guys, telling them some stuff they didn’t know. An watching them gave me some courage to do stuff I hadn’t done in 27 years that I was nervous about trying again. I can still Ollie, just not moving that great yet, and I’m building up the courage to drop back in on the half pipes. Half’s are my favorite. So anyway, just trying to say to get out and skate and have fun!!

We used to go down hills and I remember hitting a few car tires Hahahaha. Never broke anithing Luckuly. Then my aunt gave me a board she got, from a rummage sale, for free. Was Soooooo happy about it. Then my grandma had the brilliant idea of throwing it in the garbage (afraid that Id hurt myself. That was a really ignorant move on her part. She could've simply hid it from me and given it back a few years later). Have fun with your board mate. I was thinking of buying one recently. Good going, Chloe! I used to skate when I was a teenager but I started off pushing with my front foot. It felt more natural and I had no one to tell me otherwise. No wonder I had a hard time mastering tricks. I quit skating when I finished high school. When my daughter turned 6 I got her a board thinking I could easily teach her. I found that I had become a stiff old man. When I discovered your video it really helped me to teach her the proper way right off the bat! Thanks guys, you make me look like a hero. 40-year-old dog re-learning old tricks.

+LuckyStriker 39 yo here, pushing with my front foot as well. Haven't gone into tricks yet as I plan on mostly doing freeride/cruising and some light downhill. Guess I'll learn in time if the front foot push has screwed me over :)

You are an excellent teacher. Me and my friend learned how to ride a skateboard (begginer) within an hour. Thank you so much! And we went from shaking like crazy to going down drive ways and cruising down the street, in about an hour. The only weird thing was I would've stepped on the ice with my right foot, but I was way more comfortable with my left.

22 almost 23 yr old here and the best advice is bending the knees for sure. Keeping low and balanced is key and knowing how hard to shift weight. Getting comfortable riding around is gonna take a long second for sure and an Ollie is like hopefully 4 months away if I keep at it I appreciate the vid Chole!

I recently started skateboarding. I have been learning from a couple youtube videos and some articles for beginners. I would say the most important thing I learnt from thsi video is to learn to put your back foot on and off to learn how to get off the board. In my experience, I skipped practicing that and went straight to pushing and getting on the board and jumping off, which makes getting to a stop a really scary thing when the speed is a little high. Thank you so much for this video!

I'm a 66 yrs. old retiree, bought a 41"Volador longboard about 2 months. ago. Learned by watching vids like this, I can't remember having so much fun as riding this board. Have not really riden on the streets yet, but been sticking to large parking lots, and bike trails. If you've ever wanted to skateboard, and thought you couldn't, try it, it's addictive.
