Episode 19: SOLO Navigation Exercise to Enstone from Kemble. Part 1 of a 2 part mini series.
Comment, like and please do subscribe! Disclaimer: these videos are in no way a substitute for getting yourself training as most safety checks and radio calls are omitted for brevity reasons. I'm learning to fly microlight aircraft at Kemble Flying Club based at Cotswold Airport. Many thanks to David Young, my instructor - book yourself a lesson today!

I've been fascinated with aviation since I was a young lad...even flying model planes and had been bought some PPL lessons in the past, but learning to fly was far too costly. Until I heard about an NPPL licence - flying Microlights are far more affordable. Do leave a comment! Anything you'd like to see next time?

Superb episode Ben. I wonder if it’s a Radio thing but I talk to myself all the time too. In the air, the car, at home... As for the coolant, that was interesting because I have read that ‘partial’ failures are harder to deal with then a full fail because you start second guessing what to do. I would like to think I would have turned back, but I don’t know if that’s because I have a little more experience now, or just because I’m watching with the benefit of hind sight from my couch. I suspect if I had been in your shoes I would have carried on too. ‘Get there itis’ is of course a consideration. Anyway, great you got a go in the Eurostar and it’s made an entertaining video so winners dinners I’d say!

Rory On Air - mate, I must say I’m looking forward to your video tomorrow. Must be a radio thing, talking to myself ALL the time!! Yeh, luckily no major issue but interesting you say that it could’ve almost been harder to deal with than a full failure of something. It really left me in two minds and I certainly had a bit of “get there itis”! So....I got a lift back in a Eurostar at full chat, low level....a video I’m looking forward to putting together! Thanks for watching mate

Ben Atkinson well I hope people enjoy it. It’s slightly different to what I usually do. I’m really looking forward to your return trip in the Eurostar - sounds like a lot of fun and you get to do another solo cross country so I’d say it’s a win all round.

Rory On Air Without wishing to sound sycophantic, you and Ben, plus a couple of others, have inspired a couple of us towards exploring fixed wing 3 Axis microlights. The videos are well presented and very educational. Keep up the good work.

Muso Seven I cant speak for Ben but I’m delighted when I hear about anyone taking up flying because it’s such good fun and the community benefits from new blood. Even more so if my videos have played a small part in getting people to start their own journey. Thanks for the comment!

That brought back some fun memories. I used to fly motorgliders out of Little Rissington. Good to see you managed to land safely. Engines are fickle things and that looked like one of flights where masses of experience was gained.

Great video , personally would have turned back , but it's all part of the learning process. Good decision to contact the instructor and get a lift back . Hope the next video out soon , beats watching normal TV 👍

Andrew Martin thanks Andrew for the comment, and watching of course! Yeh, I think with more experience I would turn back. And....I certainly would next time. So - an important lesson. As Rory on air mentions in the other comment, I may have had some “get there itis”! A good point. Thanks for watching, next video out next week

Thanks Ben, echo fellow aviator comments that I'd have turned back - clearly difficult to spot a small coolant leak in the pre-flight too. As Rory said look forward to the Eurostar return flight to Kemble!

Hi Ben, Always excited to have an update from you. You're so brave and honest sharing all this with us, it will help others learn too, so alls well that ends well. Easy for us armchair experts to comment, like farmers being experts on other farmers' livestock when its ill! My two pence worth? I would have turned back, but as you were okay, the aircraft was okay, it's chalked up as experience. You made the right call when you didn't do solo circuits in the past as it didn't feel right. My dad used to say 'don't go if it doesn't feel right'. If I'd been in your shoes, I would have been pondering things such as; is this temp issue due to an airlock, coolant leak, head gasket failure, crack in the cylinder head/engine block or maybe an obstruction in the exhaust, or failed/stuck thermostat? Perhaps I'm just paranoid though? Also things could have been worse for you, or the aircraft/engine. I'm so glad all ended well. No worries about chatting to yourself or the aeroplane :-) Don't all aviators do that? I've been told not to fall into the trap of doing checks, FREDA, HASEL et al and merely going through the motions - you didn't as you spotted the temp issue (which in your defence was a bit weird climbing and dropping etc). As the experts say, you learned about flying from that. ;-) I love 'Ciren', and 'This Country' (reminds me of some of the characters I grew up with in that area LOL!). Looking forward to the next video! My dad used to fly from a small strip wedged between the Fairford and Brize CTZs/CTA. Venture outside of those and then there was Lynham - busy area! Looking forward to your low level dash for home!

Ben Atkinson You're welcome. All's well that ends well. Keep em coming! BTW, may I ask, did you go left of Little Rissington to avoid Brize Norton Zone/CTA (my perception of Enstone is it's north west of Oxford and thus south east of Brize - if that makes any sense)?

Thanks for sharing Ben. I can't remember where I picked this up from or read it but: "If there's any doubt, there's no doubt" and I stick with that. Based on that, I would have turned back. I fight with thinking that I'm overcautious all the time but I like that rule, for now. The views from your aircraft are great but the PA28 I fly is not so good for that. I like the bit the Simon S pointed out at 14:04 - There is also some irony in saying they are "Cool". Cheers and thanks again for sharing.

We're actually doing this videos to learn from our mistakes. I probably would have acted just like you. You want to finish the mission:“It'll be alright.“ This is just as dangerous as routines. Or how did you actually see the temperature at 14:04 ? 🧐😂

Simon S - hahaha!! Really laughed at that. Maybe the Audio has gone out of sync here?? Though I did find myself rushing the checks a little on that downwind so could’ve looked quickly before and “spoken the check aloud” after. Anyway, thanks for the comment....

Alex Johnson - hey cheers Alex! Yeh - the syllabus promotes the use of GPS, in fact in my instructors words “you’d be stupid not to use any safety features available”. But of course I absolutely have to learn how to use traditional methods too. As you can see the gps really is just used as a back up here. Thanks for watching!
