Episode 23: After some short field practice ( • LEARNING TO FLY | Epis... ) I was confident of flying into Clench common the following morning. This is the 1st episode in a 2 part mini series. Second video coming soon.
To see my previous effort at flying into Clench with my instructor:
• LEARNING TO FLY | Epis...
and
• LEARNING TO FLY | Epis...
Disclaimer: these videos are in no way a substitute for getting yourself training as most safety checks and radio calls are omitted for brevity reasons. I'm learning to fly microlight aircraft at Kemble Flying Club based at Cotswold Airport.
Many thanks to David Young, my instructor - book yourself a lesson today! www.kembleflyingclub.com
I've been fascinated with aviation since I was a young lad...even flying model planes and had been bought some PPL lessons in the past, but learning to fly was far too costly. Until I heard about an NPPL licence - flying Microlights are far more affordable. Do leave a comment! Anything you'd like to see next time?

Really enjoying watching your progress. Watching you fly into Clench Common was especially good as, weather permitting, I start my flight training there next weekend! Top landing, as Rory on Air would say, “a greaser”!

Thanks very much David! Ahhh nice, you’ll love it. May benefits to learning there...your landings will have to be tip top but your radio work won’t get so much practice so that’s worth studying a bit extra on the side.

I have only just joined your video's and I know this video was published sometime ago, but you look as though you have total control at this stage of your training. Well done and many thanks. 😎

From now on I'll just call you mr. Smooth! What a beautiful landing, mate! Exciting to land somewhere else for the first time, right? Still a shame the weather over the Canal was too bad, last Sunday. I would have loved to hop over to the UK, to do some flying and VLOGging...

It looked like a very nice day for flying. When you said "Is that Hullavington?" I thought 'I hope not, or he is about 180 degrees off course'. Good to see Bassett and Jn 16 of the M4 at Swindon from the air too.

Robert Payne, likewise, but its easier from my armchair for me to see such, less workload LOL! Kemble still has lots of airfields around it, which could get a bit confusing, depending on which way, you're facing, ie. after doing aeros or exercises. Eg. Oaksey, Charlton Park, Badminton, Nympsfield, Aston Down, Hullavington, Rendcomb, Rissington, Lynham, Wroughton, Fairford et al. Also am I correct in thinking, that seven times out of ten, at Kemble, RW 26 (left or right) is in use, and 08 (L or R) less so? With a lot on ones mind/heavier workload such things can become - momentarily - confusing?

Robert Payne haha yes - even saying hullavington at the time didn’t feel quite right. I drive past hullavington on my way to work and I don’t drive past Swindon I so knew deep down that was definitely incorrect ha! Yeh really nice trip for a navex. Plenty of VRP’s. Trip over there was silky smooth. Thanks for watching!

Muso Seven id say it’s actually far closer to a 50/50 split. However almost all my winter training was off 26. Summer seems mostly 08. Varies almost daily at times! I find it particularly confusing when joining overhead if there’s a change in dunway

Ben Atkinson Hi, yes overhead deadside can be confusing, if the wind changes direction whilst away from the AF, my brain would struggle with such these days too LOL!

Having a coffee, enjoying more of Ben's success, half way through watching (may get called away). Well done Ben! Very exciting times! You must be well on your way now. Can I ask, in microlights are the XCs out and back flights to certified airfields that can sign off your away landings? If I recall, my dad's, ancient PPL, required a QXC of three such airfields and n amount of nautical miles in one trip? Wrote some more stuff about options for emergency landings around/over Swindon (but IT issues got the better of me); Redlands Farm, Draycott Farm, the farm opposite Draycott, Wroughton of course, maybe even South Marston at a push? Graham is a lovely guy, that was kind guidance from him.

Muso Seven - yeh all good options. Plenty of airfield options when you’ve got some decent altitude. Thanks very much. Very kind - yes it is exciting! Yeh the XC’s have to be over 40nm in total with a landing further than 15nm from your original take off point I think. Closer than the PPL equivalent. Yeh I have actually flown out of Redlands once when shopping for a flying school. Plenty to think of!

Ben Atkinson Hi, yes Swindon is still quite well served for aviation, but Redlands is soon to close, so I'm led to believe. Sadly Honda going, might be a silver lining opportunity for a new small airport and trading estate to service all the new houses going in?! There's also Membury and a small airstrip near the Newbury MW Junction if you're ever going that way.

Great video! One small thing, it's best to not wear polarising lens as they can affect your view of displays. I had one phone that i used and when I had polarised lenses on I couldn't read the display, was just black!

Hey mark! Cheers for the comment. It’s a really good point. Hadn’t thought of. However I could still see the radio readout / iPad which are my only screens to worry about. But I guess if they’re going to reduce glare coming off other air traffic too then not such a good idea. 🤷‍♂️ thanks again - keep watching!
