“Learning to Code is Not Just for Coders” | Ali Partovi | TEDxSausalito

COFOUNDER, CODE.ORG, ILIKE, & LINKEXCHANGE
"Every child in America deserves access to Computer Science."
Described by the San Jose Mercury
News as one of “Silicon Valley’s top angel investors,” Ali Partovi has backed Airbnb, Dropbox, Facebook, Uber, and Zappos.
In 2013, Partovi helped his twin brother Hadi
launch Code.org, which promotes computer
science education and has introduced 200
million kids to computer programming via the
“Hour of Code.” Early in his career he cofounded LinkExchange and later iLike.

@Kiki Jiji My grandpa did the same with my dad with our old commodore in the 80s. It's not so far fetched. There's still programs on that machine my dad wrote when he was 11. He's not particularly brilliant. I wrote flash actionscripts for fun when I was 8. It's not that hard. People just don't see the point or don't have the patience.

Today we are living in the information age, the fourth industrial revolution, everything moves fast. There are so many exciting possibilities out there, mobile supercomputing, self-driving cars, internet of thing, machine learning, genetic editing, farming, sport, and many more that enhance life tremendously. Let our kids learn the new second language called Coding. A language between human and machine. Don't be afraid, it is not human versus machine, but it is people who know machine vs those who do not. Remember Charles Darwin (1809): "It is not the strongest or the most intelligent that survives, but the one most responsive to change" .

A lot of people dont understand that most games that are called "Useless" allow kids to have an engage in a creative experience without getting bored with it Minecraft a infinitely expanding world that lets kids create, code and construct what ever they want. Chess is considered a game but the strategy and understanding needed provides knowledge that sitting in a chair with a text book cant give someone. Games are amazing at teaching kids valuable lessons that are more engaging and entertaining then a class room can and maybe if schools took advantage of it we student could have a much more enjoyable time at school.

The most important thing in learning coding is; I don't know why should I code. I don't know anything about it but rather just following algorithm. We built or develop preexisting software by using softwares. I never understood; how was the first software built? How do machine learning and AI work? What if all software are vanished so how could we rebuild it! This is the reason I never get interested in anything but asking philosophical questions because no one talks about it; how do really a stuff work? Neither in classical learning nor in so called modern tech learning. No curiosity is satisfied ...

Is computer science hard? Yes! But I still think it should be taught. Heck, I think science is harder than computer science. In year 8 we were learning how to program games on scratch and I absolutely loved it. Me and my friend used to code games in the first half of the lesson then the second half we would legit teach the entire class of how to code using scratch. I have no doubt in my mind that computer science should be a manditory subject throughout high school.

I am surprised how many people think "coding" covers everything. In actuality, it essentially just means the act of typing in "code" with a keyboard. It does NOT include a vast majority of other aspects of software development, such as design, engineering, testing, database communication. etc. And how many people think they are "teaching themselves" when actually they are learning from authors, videos, etc. It'[s not like they are sitting in an IDE and just figure every thing out.

Speaker is reflecting the fact that he is not a Liberal Arts Major, but at one point was a "wannabe" Liberal Arts Major. Computer Programming is not and never should be a Liberal Art -it should be part of a core curriculum required for each and every discipline. Just because you contrast a girl not wanting to give up her paintbrushes in your talk, it does NOT equal kids not wanting to be deprived of learning to code so that they make "games." The reason the United States is a foul country ideologically and morally is because all the people who have learned to code constantly make games for other people to buy. You DON'T have to play a game to enjoy something or to be disciplined in something! Concrete example: Fine Arts School discipline never included having to play a "game" in order to develop the left and right sides of the brain in preparation for drawing or painting. Lerning should be fun, yes, but stop filling the world with your idiotic ideals about "games" all the time, you coding people! Because of making so many "games" on screen is why people spend too much face time on the computer to begin with. now people expect to be "entertained" in order to get a proper education! Programming and Coding do NOT use the same areas of the brain as other Liberal Arts disciplines do, and there is currently a BRAIN IMBALANCE in modern people today because of the reliance on computer technology. You Geeks are so pumped on glorifying computer culture that you can't see the forest for the trees.

Your post is a lot of nonsense. No one ever said computer programming IS a liberal art - only that THEY VIEW it as such. There is a difference. The rest of your comment seems pointless and looks like a run on sentence, so I'm not even going to bother reading it.

You can't "dump" these subjects either. If you don't have anything meaningful to say, stay out of the conversation. These subjects are all important and studying them makes us become better humans. The more you study computer science, the more you understand how ALL art is important, because you can merge the two and create enriching experiences for humanity.
