Learning Other Styles

Is copying art okay? There's a lot we can learn from a master study. Recently, I did a video on studying two artists I admire to learn about their linework.
Have you ever done a master study?

Studying other artstyles is a topic I always struggle with! I want to learn how and what they do so I can try and incorporate them to my own art but it is very difficult to know where to start when studying someone else

Just sketch from reference. For example u just made a sketch from reference that has hard lights and shadows. Next time u sketch, try to encorporate hard lights and shadows.

@@madametj U just sketch what u see. And apply some prior knowledge (if u have it. After sketching a lot, u do have a general idea of the forms). Sometimes just turn the page upside down as well as the reference and sketch wahat u see. Turn the page around to different angles to help u make it more accurate. Just keep on sketching and you'll get better over time :).

I recommend starting with their certain aspects, like OP is doing here with their linework. Take their color style, blending, line thickness, structure, but only one at a time

For my art, I tend to stick with video game and manga artists from the late 90s to the early 2000s. Ayami Kojima is a personal favorite of mine, along with the artists from Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the Ocarina of Time Era Zelda games. The art is a sense of being realistic, but is somewhat either dramatized or softened with the atmosphere being surrealistic.
