LEARNING FRAME FABRICATION... THE HARD WAY
I'm trying my best to take the bull by the horns and tackle this project but there are aspects of it that I am not very experienced with, such as bending tubing and building frames or roll cages. I am giving it my all and making mistakes!!! I'm learning the hard way, thats for sure but I am learning frame fabrication one mistake at a time!

Cabinets, lots and lots of cabinets! Keeping as much as you can off the floor and into cabinets will not only make it more organized, your garage will look better because everything will have a place. Plus you won’t spend a lot of time moving items and things won’t get wet should you encounter a water issue! I’m all for being organized!

I am continually amazed at you Trent. Just looking at all the equipment and tools that are in your shop and you know what each one of them does and how to use them. You’re an amazing young man and so is Brandon who is so faithfully at your side knowing and understanding what needs to be done next. I’m proud of you boys.
I think I would put cabinets and shelving around the entire lower section on all three walls. You have so much stuff and it would be great to get it organized. Perhaps you could get all the stuff out of your basement and put it in the garage so Allie can have a work out room. On the upper part of the three walls in the garage I would get a local artist to draw murals, perhaps of the places you have traveled or of the activities you enjoy or used to enjoy. You'll never be sorry if you surround yourself with art!

And among all the pictures, add some of Leo's art, ie. fingerpainting etc.
Those pictures of Brandon in a bikini, you mentioned in one of your other videos on your other channel. 😂
Everyone has to learn bud. Even a pro has to check thing when they use a different pipe bender. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Learning how to build is half the battle, memories, and joy!!! Your doing great. Even the “pro” who does these things for a living keeps sending the wrong size bolts. Lol. We all make mistakes!!! Only way to really learn. You will be rollin’ before you know it. Won’t be long till Allie is yelling and Leo is smiling from ear to ear.. just like dad. Enjoying Moab!!!!
Building the motor frame is like pouring the foundation for a building. If the foundation isn’t correct, it’s difficult to get the building level and square. Hats off to Trent for building the motor frame.

That's why the building is a hair out of square.
Good on you Trent for having a go at everything! From building a house to re-building a truck for that matter anything. I admire you're determination and never giving up! As a European living in the US what I admire the most about Americans is the can-do-spirit! Cheers mate! By the way isn't there a cover for your mic that will reduce echo?
Oh gosh Trent your truck parts are looking so good you are just so amazing at all of this work you are doing. I am so excited to see this truck get put back together. thanks for sharing all of your amazing hard work. have a beautiful and blessed rest of your week, sending love and hugs, bye! 🤗🥰👍👏💜💜💜
Definitely some shelving and cabinetry!! Organizing the space….efficiently! The space looks so nice!
Great video, I am happy you are not looking for a hydraulic leak on the Skid Steer ! I made the mistake of putting posters up. When you take them down you have holes to fill or tape to pull off. Just shelves or cabinets for storage. It will keep it organized.
Man, you can do two of these video's a week working on the car, and it'd be fine with me. I'm not a mechanic, but I enjoy watching. Keep em' commin Trent.
Loved the 70's ish theme music running thru. I agree cabinets for things.
Mountain Murals above cabinets. Love your channel here in Colorado
Thank you for sharing. Any garage needs vintage car and gas station signs. You all take care and continue the great work.
Garage walls- a pic of van in South America and Monster Truck pics and a pic of Joel Rock climbing...and a Trent Garage sign.
I’m so proud of you Trent! Sometimes you have to make mistakes if just to learn from them😉
Trent, you never make mistakes. You only learn lessons. If you make a mistake, you’ll continue doing so until the lesson is learned.
Use a CAD program. Mark all your bend centerlines on the straight tube then bend. Use a piece of 3/4” tube (EMT) as a pattern for trial and error. Layout on garage floor and use angle levels to get your planes in line.
You could probably save yourself a lot of time and aggravation if you had a micrometer and a thread pitch gauge. Put the micrometer on the stud that you know is correct and then use the pitch gauge on the threads to determine the number of threads per inch and pitch. Then order the correct size studs and nuts without all the guesswork. I use my micrometer for everything. I actually have three of them. Sometimes I use one to double check the other one. The thread pitch gauge comes in handy to check anything that is threaded. You will probably need two or three of them to cover all the different sizes of bolts. But if you’re going to be doing all the work you are gearing up for, these are a couple of indispensable tools to have. Good luck with the frame
When bending I have used a 3/8 copper tubing as a templete. Great job Trent 👏 👍 👌 ❤ keep it going.
Uepa..another Sunday with Trent's Garage. Watching and learning..thanks for share Trent 🙌❤️
Trent you need two more for those tubes below the ones you have with braces between them noched with the cutter you used for the front piece ... also cut a slot in the square frame side the pipe in and you can weld up the slot tying in the tubing.. I would not use just two of the tubes for the front , it needs four

Pictures of Allie & Leo as well as Lika & Frank would look Great on the Garage walls....Highlight your Family as they are your Rock...hell even slip in a pic or 2 of Brandon..he is afterall your Brother from another Mother..my friend
Large old glory American flag would be awesome looking on the walls !
😆 🤣 sorry so many messages I just get excited with what your working on great job Trent and Brandon you guys rock.😊👍
Ok wow Trent 🤓 amazing things your doing... i like the ideas put forth by a couple viewing fans... put up some big and tall cabinets and some acoustic mats to address the echo concerns although its not terrible as it at this stage of the build. I genuinely feel like all auto/mechanical type instructors should give extra credit to any of thier students who watch your episodes and do a 5 x 8 card about the cocerns and successes that your showing here - just fabulous and once a week is best as you already have the Trent & Allie channel to do as well. Its very difficult to figure out just wide something is going to be ahead of its actual final product especially when you start adding in hoses and wiring and alternators...extra batteries... hydrolic stuff... you may want to do a blueprint type journal of this build💜👏💪 with a few sketches and notes to keep track of everything as you go along. Fabulous job young man your amazing Trent!! Go get em kiddo...
6:06 it's called Bend allowance. We had to learn it for aircraft sheet metal fabrication. You're doing great!
Hey Trent things are looking and coming along great with the truck
Trent, NICKLEBACK will sound much better in the garage if you follow this suggestion! The garage will sound like you are in a cave until you add acoustic treatment to the walls. One of the most cost effective (cheapest) method is to use 2x4 acoustic ceiling tiles and hanging them with the back facing out. These are fire resistant/proof and available at HD and Lowes. They are intended to be installed in a ceiling grid, like in office ceilings. The back side of them is compressed fiberglass, an outstanding acoustic material and typically yellow. Wrap the fiberglass side in canvas drop cloth or thin material (again cost effective) so the fiberglass is not exposed. Make frames for them or just use an adhesive on the front side and attach to the walls. Scatter the placement or follow a pattern but cover between 15 to 25 percent of walls. Seems like a lot of panels but the garage has a lot of wall surface that is reflecting sound. Plenty of KZread channels showing how to make these. The end goal of the panels is to reduce/eliminate parallel reflective surfaces. There is a reason they call them "Acoustic Ceiling Tiles"!
You should get sponsors to put up banners on the walls, like all the tv truck shows.
Awesome job bending! I usually plug weld the square to the round front rails 🤷🏼♂️it helps resist cracking later on ☺️ Even though your going to brace it I would still do it 😉
love it great show we made gates at work with 2 inch pipe and used paper towel rolls to do the cuts to fit pipe just like your jig does
Trent. Do what all of us should have and get the biggest 1 or 2 tool boxes you can. That way they can match and you can grow into them. Reach out to various tool brands. Im sure youd get support.
I saw someone do Acoustic Wood Diffuser panels very cool looking!!! I love both your channels!!!
Love the yellow welding jacket # fabrats
Looking good. There is a company called Ruff Stuff Specialties that makes quality gussets, engine mounts, spring perches. and much more. I have used his stuff on my last jeep build.
Fabric/vinyl banners on the walls will help with the echo. Bet more than a few automotive sponsors would send you guys some, and they’d even pay you for the advertising. 😉
Why do auto parts have the same name as body parts??? Lol the walls look great. As Leo grows maybe you can let him loose in there with multiple brushes and colors of paint. It seems as everyone in multiple sites is being sent the wrong things. Almost makes you want to give them a knuckle sandwich to vent frustration… or not. Really fun to watch, once again verifying that I can never be a mechanic!!! For me it would be all errors. I thought a bender referred to going drinking. Thanks for the vocabulary lesson!! Maybe someday I can talk mechanic or welded!! LOL
When using a mandrel bender make sure you spray the tube and mandrel with wd-40 or something like that so the die doesn’t wear out fast as it’s actually drawing it through the die. Also make sure you level out truck/frame on hoist before you use any level on frame as hoists are usually very un level and arms flex….

And to clean tube before welding make sure if you use brake cleaner that it’s de chlorinated brake cleaner ….I know from experience and it’s not good !!
Hey Trent, You should call Paul from Fab Rats.. He is pretty good at tube bending. And he is fairly close by. Or Robby Layton from Layton Autobody.
Trent you and Brandon keep doing what your doing i have not seen anything like what your doing. i came from the days of 3 wheelers and Honda Odyssey . its very interesting...
I have heard that it is not always the destination, but it’s the journey. Personally I can’t wait till we get there! This rock crawler is going to be awesome for Moab😎
Cool full wall murals would looks awesome!
Can wait to see the finish product
In my husband's 25 years in auto body they used frame dimension guides supplied by frame machine equipment suppliers.we used to call it notching the pipe when we built race cars.

Hey Trent. Agree with comment below but was thinking more of suspended cabinets above the grey line so that you still have the floor space underneath. You could put lights under the units. what do you think?

Pictures from your trips where their are cars, vans and trucks in them… I believe 200 cm x 120 cm (80" x 50") would be nice in one long row on the 3 walls vertically… and shades of shiny grey on the upper part of the wall… and darkest shiny grey in the ceiling.. ❤

You might want to keep some of the echo to keep the wonderful garage vibe 🚗🚙🚜🚐
Like the way you always have a backup task to do when some of the parts are missing on the planned task. In elementary/primary school, you clearly got a “+” on Makes good use of time.
Great unboxing! I know you’re a van guy, and I remember in the 70’s the favorite van interiors were orange and rose shag carpet. That would look so cool on your floor and kill the sound.
Trent, that was very intense, a lot of calculations needed. Keep going like that, the end will soon become insight. Good luck for the next stage, from Mike. 👍
Trent, maybe you can call your machine shop guy and ask if he could make those pesky studs (the right size) for you? You know, get some stock, thread it, cut to length and maybe had them coated. Just a thought.

It's BS that he keeps getting sent the wrong size.
First you need a big tv on one of the walls 😎 and more tools
You need a huge "Trent's Garage" logo on the wall.
Good job, guys!!!😊🎉❤
Some cabinets, photos, a sign of some sort (Trent & Allie or Trent’s Garage)! Only way to get better is to “take the bull by the horns”! Mistakes are knowledge.
Trent, if anybody can figure it out it will be you! Kudos for even attempting this, but you’ll learn a lot, trial and error buddy, you’ll be happy to say you did this when it’s all said and done! 😊😎
I know I hit you with a lot of comments. Please forgive me... I am mute, essentially, a side effect from radiation treatments I got nearly 40 years ago to cure cancer... I like to talk about this stuff as much as the next guy... but my only outlet is through typing... comments sections. Anyway... one other suggestion... there is a welder named Oscar on the B is for Build channel that is INCREDIBLE. I don't know if it would help to have a look at what he does and how he does it... but I've been most impressed with his work.
Can I adding tools and storage shelf’s on the walls. That is what my husband did with his. Very helpful. 1:35
I am indeed having a great time watching “Trent’s Garage” 🚗
Great videos, but not convinced on the round tube to rectangular connection method currently used. I would consider rectangular similar to the rear, plug weld & fully gusset all joints, then have multiple round tubes interconnected to this to reduce stresses in any one area. I realise this may not be possible due to clearance and articulation. Vernier Calipers also need to be your new best friend. Enjoy the build process, and take your time, a hair out of square will definitely fight you on this one eventually.
check to see if they a metric conversion of what you are looking for, check it out on your calipers
Hey you need your tubbing bender perfectly leveled and then you always use a magnet level on the outgoing bent tubes to make it perfectly leveled to what is in your bender. I worked for a company that built promod drag cars. Using a level is everything. I hope this helps. Love you guys show!❤️😁👍
just a thought, under where the round and square tubing is open and a great place for dirt and water. I would cut and notch a flat plate to block that area off and it would also add more support for the round tube. IMHO..
Temp Echo Fix - Hang blankets from ceiling, or against walls (or near walls)
Hello trent, yes i agree with the cabinets and selves but you know what i would like to see in a wall, neon lights with the logotype "trent's garage"...my best regards and love
Murals for your wall would be sooooo cool.
the 'cavernous' sounds in the garage are something you'll adapt to. It looks gr8 and must feel nice to have a 'finished' place to work in. Trent loves to buy and collect 'stuff'. He's always going to have an 'organization' problem. I love the theme a lot of minimalists go by: every time you buy something new . . (bring something new to the house or garage) - - you must eliminate something.
@KayInMaine

That ceiling is high enough that he could put cabinetry up near the ceiling and use a latter when he needs to get something down. Lots of ways to lift stuff off the floor. He'll get there!
watch a vid on bending tube , learn about spring back and more, yes you need test bends , use 1 inch increment's on test piece so u know how much pipe it took , its hard to see spring back when using air. mark your centerline .As a you tuber you should use this resource that pays your bills , its better than collage , you can learn anything!
Always fun to hang out with Trent on Sundays.
A youtuber i watch has some giant flags on the wall on a frame with foam panels behind it. All you see is the flag but it dampens the sound amazingly :)
Looks great. Get a tubing sander it will save you a bunch of time. It attaches to your grinder. Awesome work.

I actually have one, used it to clean the tubes on the axle when removing paint. I should have pulled it out to clean that tube end on the frame
License plates from all over you can find even old ones are a garage must!
One step closer Trent! It's getting exciting!!
What fun! Great work learning and growing. One suggestion when you take your measurements. Make sure you allow room to remove the parts (ex: headers).
I think you're approaching the bending of the tube backwards. From a starting point, where is your final destination. Then decide the middle bends to get there.
@stephenoshaughnessy2279

The final result looks good.
After shelving, the only thing that I would recommend is a good remote microphone for your cameras. That would do away with any echoing.
Great job Mr Trent enjoy your progress, until next time.
As far as the walls in the Netherlands are concerned, I usually see large pictures hanging in most garages of very scantily clad ladies, of course you could also hang beautiful landscape pictures, which can certainly be found on the internet. Greetings from the Netherlands Hans👍👍👍👍👍🍀

No! Have posters printed of their many wonderful adventures! No nearly naked women! Keep it classy! 😜
Pictures from your vans’s trip to Sud America will look good
Trent you should have cut a flat plates to fit the square tube with a circle cut to except the round tubing that way you could have got a good weld.
Home Depot has small sheets of metal or diamond plate you could put on wall at back of workbench to protect wall.
HUGE LOGO ON PANEL BOX WALL I think you should put a really big TRENTS GARAGE Logo on the wall that the panel box is located on. Maybe 20ft by 12ft, this way it will be in the background all the time during a lot of your videoing. Cut it out of 2” foam board and wrap the pieces in different colored sound deadening materials to control the reverberations in the shop. Or buy sound panels that you suspend from the ceiling
You are showing everyone that tube bending is an art form much like the old days of plumbing when pipe fitting was required cutting and threading a measure correctly to accommodate fitting to make bends and offsets Suggestion may want go to customize exhaust and muffler shop for some tips in pipe bending
Collection of old license plates, vintage garage related things. Shelving and cabinets.
Trent make posters out of pictures from your travels in the van ❤
Maybe put up plexiglass or something like that to protect the walls then put shelves! Unless the shelves have a solid back. I’m sure you’ll do something great 👍 😊👍
Thorley is the only way to go with Toyota, been in the game for 30+ years and makes a bomber product. Good on ya for learning new skillz 🎉
just hang some light blankets up on cloteslines high up in the garage that should dampen the echo a little and you can take it down again once the room is filled enough as for the bench grinder , the startup currents on those things are kindog high (needs to spin up two flywheels basicly) and the switches on the cheaper ones arent the best , i had a few arc out and melt internally , its not the end of the world as you can just replace the switch , you could allso install a relay that can run a higher current in the base of the machine so the switch doest get the full load on it and stys in one piece as for drawng the centerline on the floor with the car on the lift , might want to mark it as to where to hang a bob wieght down off on each end so that should the car move on the lift (because youre pulling on the frame or sumting like that , the centerline moves with it (or you can at least see that the centerine on the floor isnt the centerline of the car no more )
Wall pics - maybe frame/poster snaps of you're various builds.... Vans, Terry, and now vehicles coordinated with scenic results? :) FYI - really enjoying the level of engine/vehicle build presented. I'm not an expert but have assembled an engine in my life and pulled/put-in transmissions and added headers etc - so I'm learning a lot seeing the tools you use etc and you're comments on this/that. May not be so enjoyable to more professional/experience vehicle builders but really enjoyable for me / my level - thanks for sharing!!
Go car parts on the walls. 3D art. Get Brandon on there more. It's a 50/50 deal. Cracking vid. Keep them coming
Cleaning the weld area with acetone will make a big difference on the quality of weld.
Get someone to make a shop mural so it would look more like a Mechanics Garage. Decide by space where to put all the tools boxes then make some shelves on top of some tools boxes. And finally get or make some stand up cabinets with doors so you could put all the electric equipment.
You need a big Trent’s garage banner on the back wall. I don’t mind the echo it’s not horrible
Little suggestion wete the round tube goes in the square tube drill holes other square tube so you can plug weld to the round tube in the frame think it will help with strength
