I've been learning Croatian for a while now, and it's definitely not an easy language! In this vlog, I'm sharing the hardest and easiest/best parts for me, about learning Croatian from scratch. I don't have any Croatian roots, but I now have a Croatian husband, and three Croatian-Canadian kids :)
Here is what I found to be the hardest parts to learning Croatian:
1. Genders - In English we don't have genders for words, so that's something I find very difficult in Croatian. Croatian has 3 genders - feminine, masculine, and neutral. You always have to think about matching the adjective with the noun, and you have to know the word's gender ahead of time, in order to properly match them. It's just something that native English speakers have a hard time with, because we don't have a feeling for each word, and whether it's feminine, masculine, or neutral gender.
2. Cases - In English, we don't use cases like in Croatian. I find this the most difficult part of learning Croatian, because there are 7 cases, meaning every noun can change 7 different times depending on how it's used. It's definitely not something I'm used to. I'm working on it, but absolutely still have many mistakes!
3. Double negatives - This is something new, because double negatives in English just don't make sense. They make the sentence positive again! It's just something I have switch in my head when I'm speaking, in order to properly put together double negatives.
4. Tricky letters - Croatian has many tricky letters in their alphabet. The hardest ones for me are the č and ć. They're not hard to pronounce, it's just difficult to tell which one is which! They're very similar, so I often mix them up when I'm spelling words. I have the same problem with dž and đ. The hardest letter for me was lj. It's something completely different than anything we have in English, and it was very hard in the beginning to pronounce.
5. Prefixes - In English, prefixes often change the meaning of a word to make it mean the opposite. In Croatian, there are sometimes many words that look similar from the middle to the end, but a little prefix on the beginning completely changes the meaning of the word. In the video, I give an example of 9 words that are the same, just with different prefixes and then different meanings.
The easiest and best parts of Croatian language:
1. Each letter has only one sound - this is great, because in English, many letters have more than one sound, making it complicated to read and write for foreigners. In Croatian, it's never tricky to spell or read a word, because you can just sound it all out, letter by letter!
2. Word order - In English, there aren't many ways you can mix up words in a sentence. In Croatian, it's much more flexible and creative. Of course there are rules around how words should be put in order in Croatian, you don't have to follow them if you're in a casual conversation. It's great, because you can have 10 ways to say one sentence (and that's thanks to the cases - at least they have one benefit!)
3. Pronouns - In Croatian, you don't really ever have to use pronouns. In English, they're a must, or no one will know who you're talking about.
4. Multilingualism - Once you know Croatian, you automatically know Bosnian, Serbian and Montenegrin. It's amazing, because the languages are pretty much the same, and if you travel to one of those countries, you already know the language and can speak with the people there.
5. Sound of Croatian - Croatian has a very nice sound. It almost sounds like a song when I hear people talking around me. I also think it's adorable when I hear my kids speaking Croatian.
All in all, Croatian is a beautiful language and I'm happy to be learning it! It's a tough language, but it's also very nice!

Here are some tips: Despite looking and sounding similar, the letters Č and Ć actually have nothing to do with one another. In native words, wherever there is Č, there will usually be a related word that has a K or C (ručni - ruka, učiti - nauka, pričati - prikaz), and wherever there's Ć, there will be a related form of the word with T (braća - brat, maćeha - mati), for suffixes there is no help, you have to learn them. The glyph Ć is really unfortunate. It was borrowed from polish orthography where it makes more sense. If there is one thing I'd change about Croatian, I'd change the letter Ć to something like Ť or Ŧ. For DŽ and Đ it's the same story, they have nothing to do with one another. Đ comes from D, so there will usually be a related word with D. DŽ, on the other hand is not a native Croatian phoneme, so almost all words with it are loanwords. It can only sometimes appear because of voicing assimilation (like in "udžbenik" or "promidžba"). (Fun fact, the letter F is also not native to Croatian, so almost all words with it are loanwords) For loanwords, depending on the language they're from they usually contain only one of each pair: for English loans it's always Č and DŽ, for Italian loans it's always Ć and Đ, for Turkish loans it's usually Ć and DŽ, for Hungarian loans it's usually Č and Đ. As for verbs with prefixes, they are equivalent to English phrasal verbs. Think of the difference between "to throw" and "to throw up".

i'd like to give a little tip on the Đ/Dž ordeal -- they're usually the same sound in colloquial speech. their main purpose is to distinguish foreign words from native ones. for example: grožđe (grapes) and hrđa (rust) are native croatian words; nindža (ninja) and džem (jam) aren't. my recommendation is to pronounce it all like you would J in english. also, in most spoken language dialects, Ć and Č are the same sound too due to a merger. in standard speech, however, they tend to represent how the word was made: Ć is T+J, while Č is K+J, but sometimes it really just is how it is. it's pretty hard to know why and how unless you get into the detailed linguistics of it (your children will in school so you might even learn something alongside them) and/or learn word by word as written, but if you never do just don't worry and simply pronounce them both the same way, as most of us do, and turn on autocorrect for spelling correction, again, as most of us do. :') another thing: pronouns and word order are very useful for emphasis. this is something you'll eventually pick up intuitively, word order wise, but: baka mi radi pitu. / baka *meni* radi pitu. = grandma is baking me a pie. / grandma is baking *me specifically* a pie. if you want to emphasize the person, use the prolonged pronoun. hope this helps a tad bit. you're doing extremely well for an english speaker and i wish you equally great progress onwards. sretno ti bilo :)

Yes it's a known problem in Croatia I've noticed lol. Even in written language. It seems to me a lot of Croatian people just say or write Č or Ć at random and they even sound more similair. In Serbian the difference is a lot clearer because our Č(Ч) is usually a lot tougher sounding so it is distinguished from Ć(Ћ) a lot easier . Hopefully this comment doesn't start a nuclear warfare in the comments tho.. I didn't mean to offend anyone. You speak the language very well. Поздрав из Канаде. Pozdrav iz Kanade.

From Russian as a base you can understand a large part of any Slavic language (some will not agree, but russian is the base for all slavic languages.) The trick is to use some archaic expressions or similar words that on occasion have opposite meaning, but still you can get the point. I.e. dažd in russian is rain, in north croatia dežđ is also rain. That is why I had no problem learning russian and slovak and understanding any other slavic language.

  • @JohnDoe-jk9qn

    @JohnDoe-jk9qn

If you know Russian then it is easier to catch Croatian and understand it. Reason? Because of all Slavic languages, Croatian and Serbian are the closest to an old Slavic /old church Slavonic language. Many our Slavic cousins moved forward and developed their language while still (not that often, use old words), and that is why for example Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, etc can understand us much better than we can understand them...

What an inspiring video! I can't explain how maddening - but also rewarding - it is to learn Croatian. I am a son of Croatian immigrants and was surrounded by the language growing up. But as I got older, I quickly became rusty and found myself tongue-tied in conversation. Because my folks now live in Croatia and I visit often, I became motivated to improve. What a journey. I have repeatedly taken three different home instruction courses. After much trial and error, I have finally progressed so that I am more confident in conversation and can read and write some. You are right. As intimidating as Croatian can be, it is also a beautiful language. When you first began speaking, I assumed you were a native speaker. Learning Croatian has also motivated me to learn more languages. While I can't speak to the difficulty level of other languages, I have feeling that if I can decipher Croatian then others may not be as hard. Fewer cases I hope!

Yes, I still get frustrated by it! lol but I do love learning the language. That's great that you're able to visit often and put your hard work to practice. I definitely underestimated how long it would take me to learn. I figured I'd be fluent enough in about a year - ha ha ha ha ha. But slowly, day by day, I improved. Here I am, almost 9 years later. I haven't been able to put much work into improving over the last 5 years as I have 3 small kids (5, 3, 1), but I'm hoping to find the time to take a class to improve my grammar situation, sometime over the next year or so ;) I think you're right... if you can get through Croatian, other languages might come more easily (I think and hope :). Veliki pozdrav iz Zagreba!

I seldom comment on KZread but the one thing that comes accross when listening to you (in this video and other videos you did) is how gracious, kind and humble you are. It's beautiful to watch. You seem to love life in general, be it here in Croatia or in Canada and that is, I feel, a rare and beautiful attitude. I hope you'll always have that. And your children are so lucky to have such a mother ❤ Oh, and your Croatian is brilliant!!! As a teacher of English I'm well aware of both perspectives - that of a student and that of a teacher. Both have their hardships as well as beautiful moments. Best of luck to you and your lovely family 🥂👍🤗

Any kajkavians especially or some chakavians too, because their native tongue doesnt have č and ć just č )(in kajkavian) Thats bacause when the western south slavic languages split heres how it went; First shtokavian split from the chakavo-kajkavo-slovene branch (Ill call it CKS) Next, the CKS branch split into Chakavian and Kajkavo-Slovene In the end, Slovene and Kajkavian split from each other So all the shtokavian speeches and of course all the standard languages in the Western Balkans are one branch, and Chakavian,Kajkavian, Slovene are another Croatian is not one language technically, its made up of 3 different ones. A Shtokavian Croat whos never heard Kajkavian before aint gonna understand too much lol

Absolutely amazing!! Totally impressed by your knowledge! Just keep in mind that your Croatian is still better than most Croats' English! Keeping in mind how much harder Croatian is to learn. Not only that! Your understanding of our grammar is, without a doubt, way better than the majority of Croats' knowledge of their mother tongue! Speaking aside. Also, volume! There's LJ for you. I think it sounds the same in that word. Keep having fun mastering your Croatian! You're so close!

I am super impressed of your mastery of the Croation language and am super jealous! My wife's parents are from Bjelovar and Velika Pisanica so the Croatian culture has been a big part of our heritage. After we came back from my first ever (My wife and son's were there in 2011 without me due to work) tour of Europe as a supporting parent of the Milwaukee Croatian Junior Tamburitzans, I decided that I needed to learn the language. I attended monday night language classes at St. Augustine church in Milwaukee for 3 years and it was one of the most rewarding yet frustrating things I have done. I had a fantastic teacher and a fun group to learn with. Wow is all I can say, and not even in Croatian. I don't know how you do it and at this point I have to say for myself that maybe I will try again when classes resume.

It definitely helps living here, as I'm surrounded by the language on a daily basis, so it forces me to practice, and listen, and it's just always in my ear. I don't think I could learn it without living here...so complicated! I hope your classes continue, and I really wish you all the best in your language learning journey!

I live in Slovakia and am learning Slovak so your video was very inspiring for me. I’ve been learning for 9 years but only seriously for the last three years. I work in an English environment and am just not immersed enough and the hardcore lockdowns here over the las year and a bit really haven’t helped with that! However, for the last year I’ve been learning online and I’ve definitely improved. What really surprised me was how much of your Croatian I understood! Also, almost every issue you have I have the same with Slovak and every reason you have to love Croatian is the same for me with Slovak. You definitely need to come and try to use Croatian here and see how it goes although not in Bratislava (where everyone speaks English)! I start my new course next week and you give me reasons to be optimistic so thank you.

Slovaks and Croats are ethnically very related, they share same ancestry actually, from the early east slavic tribe of white Croats, so languages are very simmilar aswell
