I can't tell you how much I appreciate these videos! My four year-old is getting ready for her first season of rodeo and we just found out that they've added dummy roping to the list of events. I have NO idea how to rope and now have to teach her, so thank you!! :)

Dru - first of all, thank you very much for taking the time to put these videos together, I know what a time commitment it is. I'm brand new to roping and just picked up a used youth rope to get started. I had watched a few videos before, but came across yours tonight and they have been most helpful. I noticed after about 30 minutes of practicing tonight that my hand was raw. I did figure out that I was swinging it wrong after watching your videos, so that may have something to do with it. I was just wondering if you would recommend starting with a glove and if so, what kind of glove? I noticed you were just wearing some cheap work gloves, does it really matter, or just preference? Thanks again for all you do, and the time you put into teaching!

You imply here and in an earlier video that these instructions are for team roping. I'm just wondering if these basics are specific to team roping or if the techniques taught here apply to all types of roping.

I'm unsure what you mean by all kinds of roping but yes this should apply to everything. Heeling is a bit different in the swing though.

Hey Caleb, your basic swing can be developed by these fundamentals, but your tip angle, target, and how you pull your slack changes when roping calves BUT if you follow these basics and learn to catch the horns then work on roping a bale of hay on it's side around the bottom string you can start developing a good calf loop. Message me with any questions and I'll be glad to help.

My loop does not stay as a loop, it shifts to an oblong, and then it ends up as a figure eight. What am doing wrong, and how do I correct this?

  • @drustewart1717

Hey Robert, so your loop is supposed to get oblong. That's how you feel your tip. The reason you are figure eighting your loop could be a few things. If possible, go to my Facebook.com/drujstew.me page, take a video of you swinging your rope, and send it to me on messenger or email me at drujstew@gmail.com. I'll watch and help.

+Dru Stewart I posted a video on your page several weeks ago, did you see it? Also, did you make any videos of how to swing a rope from a horse? I am learning to ride and rope at the same time. Not a good idea, I suppose, but it is a good use of time because I get worn out after a trotting for a while. Nice break to walk the horse and swing a rope. Also, I find that is not easy to coil a rope while on a horse. I am not a cowboy, I just wanted to learn some skills after photographing a local High School rodeo. I need to attend a roping clinic.
