That pinky finger is a tough one!! I am still working on “Twinkle”. It still sounds pretty bad!! Learning to be patient with myself💕

Thank you! I picked up my son's violin 5 weeks ago and took it to be restrung and tuned at a local shop. I knew so little that I thought I could tune it by ear, which I can't. So a friend advised me to get an inexpensive tuner off of Amazon and it has been very helpful. I also am so new I didn't know to tighten the bow before playing and then un-tighten it when done. (You can imagine my first couple of days were quite the disaster). Ha! All that aside, I performed a pretty good Twinkle Twinkle at our local music club on Saturday (after four weeks of having the violin) and am now learning Lightly Row. I am having a little trouble getting my fourth finger correctly placed consistently and bowing from heel to the tip. But I assume all of that will come with lots of practice. Thank you so much for all of this!

Thanks so much! I am a retired lady who learned violin over 50 years ago so I did not take any Suzuki lessons. I’m getting ready to teach Suzuki to 5 orphans in Mexico in Spanish. I’m trusting the Lord for wisdom!

Going from second finger to fourth finger is some getting use to my hand hurts from straining. Also keeping a straight bow through the song is a challenge. Regardless it's fun playing the violin glad I picked it up. Your video series is amazing btw I like how you constantly remind correct form, and techniques through out the video's

Thank you for the lesson. I still have work to do on this. I find my first finger moves out of position when I place my fourth finger down. I'll keep working on that. I also find long bows (from the heel to the too) tricky - it's like I can't quite make it! Only other thing is as I play along, my bow is sometimes not in the right place (up instead of down and vice versa). But I'm getting there. Managed to play the entire piece at a steady pace. ☺️ Thank you again.

Done the 7th day - It was a beautiful secvence I love it at all After All for Strings 82 lessons, 25 lessons from Crickboom, 4 lessons from Play along and 2 lessons ABRM I repeted lots of time and working on 3rd position and Tonalization by Suzuki in the golden member club I decided tostart a Challange 1 month Suzuki I

Good evening, you are a amazing teacher, how ever I have a very hard time passing the first line, I can't understand, do I keep all the 4 fingers at once in the whole line?, just picking up the 1 3 4 when next after the first 4? then only finger 3? then finger one by it self? I can't understand. PLease help.

Thank you Henriette for such enthusiastic and technical teaching! I'm an adult learner and am having difficulty making my little fingers rounded like yours are, both on the bow and the fingering of the left hand. The little fingers want to only bend at the tip of the phalange. Any tips to help them get rounded ? There is so much to remember at once, that I suddenly see how stiff those little fingers are. (I just wanted you to know that in the International French edition of the book and Lightly Row is on page 25.)

Hello Leigh, thanks for getting in touch. As you progress, your fingers will gradually become more flexible. What you might do in the mean time is some bending and stretching exercises: pretend to play the piano when you sit at a table or desk and try lifting up the fingers one by one. It will make your fingers stronger and also more flexible. Hope that helps! Thanks also for your note about the page number. Glad you’ve found the tune.

26:46 whan you pratice at home find the bits wich you find particulary tricky and work to improve those sections before you play the whole song amthought this might feel as if takes longer to learn praticing difficult sections separately very good stydy skill and once embed that way of learning int your pratice routine it would help you throughout your violin playing career so we may as well get used to this early stages of violin jorney

Hi Nikita thanks for your message. It’s tricky to give individual feedback without seeing you play but you may try the following: when you’re on day 7, most people will find the 4th finger challenging. It takes time to grow stronger muscles. So it’s okay to progress more slowly and give your hand time to develop. Same with the bow: progress may be slow initially as bowing is a complex technique. Are you using enough rosin? Please book a one off lesson if you are struggling. Sometimes it takes only half and hour to get players on track. Good luck! 🤞🎻

Hi Henriette, You are an excellent teacher, thanks for all you do! I have one question about holding the violin. Should the neck of the violin be resting on my palm at the base of my forefinger while playing? When you show us the 'v' shape with the ink line you have us press our palm against the neck, but I'm not sure if we should leave it there while playing. Thanks for your help!

Hi Sean, thanks for you question. The knuckle at the base of your index finger should lightly rest against the neck of the violin. Initially, it will be hard not to squeeze the neck of the violin between your knuckle and left thumb, but as you gradually progress, holding the violin with your jaw rather than with your left hand, this should become easier over time.

I feel like I am constantly placing them wrong becausethe notes sound weird, how can I learn to place them in the right position? I have heard about finger tapes, could that help? Or is it better to play without them?

Hi Tara, Good question! It depends on the notes that follow. If the notes that follow are on the A string, you play a 4th finger on A. If the music carries on onto the E string, you play the open E sting.

Your lessons are great & in detail. I’m picking up my daughters violin to teach myself. But as a beginner pinkie for E is quite difficult. My daughter learnt Suzuki method 15 years ago and lightly row and twinkle used open E not 4th finger. Has it changed in the last 7 years?

It's a good habit to involve the 4th finger from the early days. It's the finger with the smallest muscle, so it will need every practice it can have 🙂

Without the sheet music it is hard to keep so I will have to stop these lessons until I can find were to buy this. I don't have an amazon account. And it was hard to tell what posit your finger was on.

Hennriette, I don't have the Suzuki Book yet. I don't know when I will be able to purchase it. Would you recommend me writing down on a piece of paper where to place my fingers in the strings? I know how to read the notes, I learned how to read music years ago and recently took a refresher. If I had the book, I could follow right along nicely. I know there is a way to continue this course without the book. Thank you very much. I had fun learning this with you! 🙂

Hi Paddy, you press the string onto the fingerboard, but no harder than to just stop the string. Any more pressure is not going to help you sound better, instead it will be tiring on the fingers and a complete waste of energy 🎻

I actually got lost on the 4th line of lightly row. I can play it, but I'm not sure what's going on after the first measure. I was expecting to play d, but I'm not sure what's going on because it doesn't match the video.

Can i ask you a question please, when i play with my 4th finger I can’t make my finger straight like you i can only press by my tip of the finger😔😔

Hi Roqia, that should be fine! Different players have different hand shapes and you will notice that some players play their pinky’s on the finger tip.

I am having so much trouble stretching my pinkie on the a string. Is there another exercise that I can do to make it easier? My fingers are pretty short.

Hi, try bringing your left elbow further under the violin. This should help the pinky to reach further. But it will stretch over time. Give it 3 months...

playing the whole piece at once, i started having pain in my right shoulder (bow arm). also it's automatically becoming stiff and i feel loosing range of motion as i bow.

And the chalange stop here, now this is my suzuki skill level...I m going to learn with this song Silver clubb videos with bow tehnics and whan I study it out Im coming back to step away in suzuky, form 1-6 it was gorgeouis seven are very usefull how to grow Suzuki is very dangerous gives to you big steps quick growing and after that big falls and divorce from violin I have to long nd big divorces from violin and nearly 3rd whan I start alone suzuki, my luck was that I find Henriette youtube violin school and I m a violinist and not ajuged to be a forever restarter us it was before

My bow tends to shake (vibrate) when I play down bow, especially in the middle section of the bow. Why is that and how can I solve this problem? Thank you in advance!

Hi Henriette. I am really enjoying your classes. I have found that I am having some difficulty reaching the E with my pinky finger. My fingers are quite long but I'm finding that keeping all my fingers down and the stretch to E hard (most of the time the note is flat). Do you have any suggestions for me.

Hi Cheryl, thanks for connecting with me . I am guessing a bit here but might it be that you can rotate your left hand more so that the ridge of knuckles where your fingers are attached to your hand become more parallel to the fingerboard? Try bringing your left elbow further under the violin. Hope this helps!

Good morning. I wanted to ask you a question. Based on your experience, is it better to purchase an inexpensive violin 200 dollars or less as a beginner violin before spending 600 to 1000 dollars on one? I am thinking of spending less money since I will probably do something to damage the violin while training, and it would be unfortunate to do it to a really nice violin. I know that this will sacrifice sound quality. What would you recommend?

Hi Jimmy, thanks for your message. I thinking is worth ging for a better violin straight away as it will make learning much easier. I think I may need to practice this lesson for a while before progressing. I feel like I'm understanding the premise of the lesson and the note changes and all that just fine, and I'm working on the transitions and stuff, but... it just sounds bad. Scratchy and screechy and wobbly and unpleasant. I think I'm just struggling to keep it all together. I can succeed at whatever part I focus on, but then the rest falls apart. If I keep my bow placed correctly on my strings, I forget how to transition my fingers. If I focus on transitioning my fingers the sound coming from the bow is terrible. If I focus on relaxing my shoulder and bow grip and not pushing too hard, I forget what else I was doing. :D Good times.

Hi Henrietta, my problem is that I usually produce trembling sound when I play 2nd finger (sometimes in 3rd finger) on A string. On other strings produced sound quality is good. I practice but I can't overcome this problem.

Hi sharmistha, are you having enough rosin on your bow? Is your A string in tune, and is your finger pressing down properly with a short nail? Try these suggestions, and come to the next live class in this channel . Fingers crossed one of these things might help
