You did forget to mention that when attacking another player and successfully wounding them, you take one card from their hand at random. Also, you don't roll for exposure when attacking another survivor. You might want to edit that text in there.

Enjoyed this video! I've been watching a bunch of dead of winter vids on KZread, trying to get a feel for whether it would work for my game group. One thing I noticed : isn't it supposed to be the player to your right that reads the crossroads card for you? That's what other videos said. Ps I have such kitchen jealousy over that gorgeous kitchen in the background! Wow! (also love how you added the little notes for when the cat wandered by! :)

You are correct! Guess I messed that up, but it doesn't make a big difference as the person holding the crossroad card isn't making any choices. I'm pretty jealous of this kitchen too. I was filming at a friend's place because my apartment at the time had zero natural light. *sigh* Some day.

I believe you added one too many zombies at the colony. You mentioned that if a location is overrun it doesn't decrease the number of zombies you need to add. I don't believe that's true. I don't have the rules in front of me to check though, so going from memory. Great tutorial regardless. Keep up the good work.

It doesn't explicitly say either way, but I've always interpreted it this way. What it says is add 1 zombie for every 2 survivors (rounded up), and since it doesn't say that the number reduces if survivors die in the process, I take it to mean that you calculate the total number of zombies to add, and then add them all regardless. It just seems to over-complicate things if you have to keep a running total. It's a good question though, thanks.

Double checked the rules last night. Each entrance to the colony is handled as if it were a location. If an entrance is overrun you don't place that zombie and kill a survivor. Here's a cut and paste from page 13 of the rules: If there are no empty spaces and no barricade tokens, the entrance has been overrun, remove that zombie and kill the survivor at the colony that has the lowest influence value. If there are only helpless survivors at the colony, kill a helpless survivor. If there are no survivors at the colony remove the zombie that would have been placed without further effect. Also, here is a cut an paste of the example on the same page: 3. The third zombie would be placed in entrance 3 but entrance 3 is already full of zombies. Entrance 3 is therefore overrun. The zombie that would be placed is not placed and the survivor at the colony that has the lowest influence value is killed. Just pointing that out because the way you're doing it is making the game much harder. It could make for a good house rule for advanced players though. Again, great video and keep up the good work.

Oh, I think I get what the miscommunication is. I'm not saying that you skip a space when it's full and add the zombie you would've added to the next space, just that losing a survivor doesn't change the total number of zombies to add. I did mess up and add eight total zombies though instead of seven, so I'll put up a fix for that. Thanks for the eagle eye.

I do and I dont. The rule also forces you to go through the objectives deck quicker and takes away some exploring of the game. Maybe not a big deal for some, but i wouldn't do it.

You should totally do a narration of the Long Night scenarios! :-D

I actually haven't had a chance to play the Long Night. It seems really cool, but I'm still enjoying regular DoW enough that it's a hard sell to buy a whole new game of it. Are the scenarios more in-depth?

RTFM The scenario's are meant to get to know the more involved modules that get added onto the base game. I think most players will play them only once, but they are really well written and add to the immersion of the game. However, it's quite text-intensive so this becomes a problem for non-native English speaking groups. Even for us, though our English is just fine, it could have been better.

yes please do a narration of each opening scenario as well as crossroads. we already downloaded a BG sound but it would be great to have a narrator for the scenarios. :-) i know it's a lot but will be greatly appreciated by everyone, IMHO.

Can you get rid of the zombies that are in the colony locations by attacking them or just use those barricade tokens? Otherwise wouldn't they just keep multiplying indefinitely and you would lose pretty quick right... I am just starting out and that is confusing me

You can attack the zombies in the colony if one of your survivors is there. You choose which entrance to remove a zombie from.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but the attacking another survivor rules explained in this video seems to be incorrect. i.gyazo.com/f8596cd82c05e5982f0391c270b20d4a.png Is the page from the rule book. It seems that the attacking player not the defending player rolls the die and has to roll a number LESS than the defending players attack value.

So I was looking up guides from Winterstarcraft and I happened upon this. All I can think is 'why does this guy look like Jim from American Pie?'

Thanks for the video :) There are still a few things I can't find in the rule book .. what happens to the starvation token in the next round's colony phase? Is it removed when we have enough food? What if there are two starvation tokens (couldn't get enough food two rounds in a row ...) - remove one every round we have enough food? If so, does the second one remove one morale again? Or just remove both at once? .. .. and do the cards used to solve the crisis go into the trash-pile afterwards, or are they just removed? .. if you play clockwise and give the first player marker to the person on your right at the end of the colony phase - that means the last player of the previous round is now the first player of the current round, so basically he plays two times in a row, right? Those were the things we couldn't figure out when we played this game tonight for the first time .. maybe someone can help :)

Good questions! You can't remove starvation tokens, but they only lower morale during rounds when you can't feed your people. Instead of losing whatever food you have in those rounds, gain a starvation and lose morale for each starvation token, so if you have two at that point you'll lose two morale. After resolving the crisis, those cards are removed from the game, not added to the trash pile. Yes, the last person to go will effectively get to go twice, which can be very dangerous if they're the betrayer. Hope that helps!

Just brought this game yesterday, a quick question. Do players get two secret objective cards (+ maybe a betrayer card) so they have 2 secret objectives to complete? Also, thanks for the tutorial. I had a lot of trouble reading the manual and it seems to have missed out about the food tokens and all that. So players can only place down crises cards on their turn? (Asking for a card from someone can only be placed in waste)

Each player draws one secret objective card from a special deck that you make. The deck has two secret objectives for each player, and then one betrayer objective card thrown in as well. And yes, you can only play cards towards the crisis during your turn, and you can't put cards in the crisis that you requested from other players.

Could anyone please tell me what to do when someone's exiled? like...if he/she was the betrayer they don't have to reveal their old secret but change the first one which was make moral goes 0 to the new one on the exiled card but... when exactly do they scream for victory when they're all done? if game only ends if moral goes 0, the main objective's completed or if rounds marker goes 0 too? I'd appreciate so much if someone could asnwer me dat, tnx in advance ;)

The exiled player can't trigger the end of game just by completing their objectives. In order to win, they need to have completed all of their objectives when the endgame is triggered, either by morale being at 0, the timer running out, or the main objective being completed.

No matter which survivor dies, you'll lose a die if they die (to a minimum of two dice when you have one survivor). If you lose all of your survivors however, you'll need to draw a new survivor. I talk about this process at 14:50 in the video.

How do you mean? The odds of someone pulling a betrayer are pretty close regardless of player count, though I suppose the individual likelihood of getting it are higher at 3 player. There are also variants to increase or decrease the likelihood of having a betrayer, so you can adapt it to your preference.

Hey, thanks! If you walk into a location full of zombies, nothing will happen until the end of the round. When you would add a zombie but there's no room to do so, that's when a survivor dies. And you can attack zombies in the colony just like you would in any other location.

@@eduardohoyos4226 You do use the crisis cards in a 2 player game, but it sounds like what you're asking about is the secret objectives. In a 2 player game, the rulebook states that you don't deal out secret objectives (meaning there's no betrayer). There are a few other minor details, which are discussed on p. 15 of the rulebook.

I'm not sure what you're referring to by "sick people." Some medicine cards can heal wounds, including frostbite wounds, and they'll say on the card what they do.

So wait... how do you play?

Quick correction. If you get bitten, you don't die immediately, but you can rather choose between just playing it safe, biting the bullet, and sacrificing your survivor, OR you can roll the exposure die. If it comes up blank, it's simply a scratch, and you live! Hurrah! If it rolls anything else (a 50-50 chance), your character immediately dies, and the next survivor in line with the lowest influence gets to make the choice. You keep going like that until someone decides to stop it prematurely (sacrifices themself when it's their turn), someone manages to roll a blank face on the Exposure Die, or everyone's dead. Provides for some quite fun debates/shouting matches when it inevitably happens to someone in the Colony.
