    I will absolutely @ you for ranking OS 5th (unforgivable) and Lower Decks, objectively the third best Star Trek show and the best Star Trek show currently on air, an unfathomably low 7th. Discovery and Enterprise are garbage tier, Voyager is just above them, in the salt mines. Then DS9, OS, Lower Decks, and TNG basically tie for 2nd.

    Very good kind of content but I kindly ask you to take in consideration two little topics to enhance the quality because the overall experience result been not so good despite the effort you have invested: - it would be better to speak slower, because the concepts are many and people need a bit of time to follow you properly and understand at the same time what you are explaining. Creating this kind of contents is like having a small digital lesson... often stopping and going back to be sure to have understood the mechanics could become a bit frustrating - the sound quality is a bit metallic, most of all if you try to follow reducing the speed to 0.75 (while following at normal speed the problem is not perceivable. Hope you don't get offended... I shared this tow little issues because I like yours contents and hope it could help in improving the overall quality fo the great videos you provide us!

    Why don’t people who make these ultra complicated boardgames just make their own videos for us to watch instead of expecting us to read the manual which no one wants to do..? they don’t realize that they’re making a lot less money because of that

  • @RTFM
    @RTFM13 күн бұрын

    Not sure if you were hoping for a serious answer to this question, but I am in a pretty good position to provide one. There are a few reasons that all come together to influence this kind of decision. First off, making tutorial videos is difficult, so a lot of the time when publishers make their own videos they're...not great. And that can be worse than not having a video at all. They sometimes hire people like me to make them, but we aren't cheap because, well like I said, these videos are hard to make. And then you have videos like this, which was asked for by my Patreon, so FFG didn't have to pay anything for it. Knowing that these kinds of videos get made, some publishers will just put out their game hoping that a tutorial will get made without their asking for one. Also some people do prefer reading manuals to watching videos, so it's not like these are a total prerequisite for a game being successful. So unfortunately, while it would be nice if every game came with a high quality tutorial for those who need it, it's probably not gonna happen for most of them.

    Some tips for every side that I would give after over 10 plays: 1. Working Class - strike to your heart's consent in the early stages, always strike if wages are ever at 'low'; don't let the cash pile up, spend it as fast as you can on prosperity - prosperity early is way cheaper, and it will build a base for the late game. High immigration is a silent but steady killer - if you let it run rampant for 2-3 rounds, you will have to feed more people and improving prosperity will be much tougher; only accept high immigration if both the Capitalist builds 11+ companies AND the government has 9 companies, that could help with cash flow. 2. Middle Class - it is fairly easy to build an engine of several high-yield companies with 2 of your workers and every round go for Extra shift. This will yield enough materials to increase prosperity "free of charge", and almost unstoppable by other players. Your Extra shifts are free and you can always sell the excess on the foreign market for extra points. 3. Capitalist - first two rounds you need to build companies like crazy, preferably taking on 2-3 loans to fund it (you can't take loans voluntarily, but can manipulate your revenue to go bust during production and taxation) - even if you would have to pay interest on loans for the whole game, it's worth it. Make a deal with the Working Class to help them with policies 4A & 5A in exchange for them helping to get 3C - taxation at 1% is paramount, if you can manage that it's to your advantage. You can live with 2B and even 2A if 3C is in effect. 6A is good, but not more of a bonus, the bulk of your income comes from selling on foreign markets. 4. Government - always react to both objectives; sometimes they ask you to provide stuff, that is potentially an extra point, these points really do add up over the course of the game. If your cards allow it, aggressively look for class legitimacy tokens in the first 3 rounds, these help immensely with legitimacy offset at the end of the round. Your second goal is to avoid IMF, especially in the last rounds - push for higher taxes if you see your coffers running dry, IMF really screws you over; it's a bit more of a gamble with optional IMF cards from expansion, but it's easier to just avoid it. IMF in round 1 is not as impactful, but in round 5 it's basically game over. As a side note, white objective deck gives you a bit more control, but a bit less points as they don't have "provide" mechanic - it's easier to maintain equal legitimacy with a white deck, but harder to score points.

    When playing as the Working Class and Middle Class, one thing to be really cautious about is your Free Actions. The game's 5 rounds long, with each round consisting of 5 actions. This means you have 25 Actions for the whole game, as well as 25 Free Actions to boot. Since one of the most important scoring Free Actions is increasing your Prosperity, you have to be very mindful of setting your class up with the necessary resources to be able to continuously use them to up your Prosperity. You're doing well if you're able to always use those Free Actions! Also, a higher population makes it MUCH MORE DIFFICULT to increase your Prosperity. Any "Emigration" cards you pick up are worth their weight in gold, since they potentially allow you to drop your population below a certain threshold, possibly decreasing the amount of resources you need to up your Prosperity! For the State, keep the Free Actions of other players in mind when you put Benefits out from your Events. A player who has a bunch of resources may neglect picking up those extra State Benefits with their limited Free Actions (and deny you getting a point from them doing so!). Try to complete Events early in the round so that other players may figure out how to grab those Benefits as part of their whole Round (or, alternatively, if a player is doing too well, finish those Benefits later in the round to overload the use of their Free Actions on their turns!).

    Great video, Shea! I did have one question; at 34:33 (and again at 41:40), you mention that the State player earns a VP for making a sale of Health/Education if the corresponding policies are in 'either section A or B'. However, as best as I can determine, it seems like the VP bonus is only applied while the relevant policy is in section 'B', and if a policy changes to section 'A', the reward of legitimacy per every 3 sold is in lieu of the VP reward. Am I missing something? I really did try to dig through these comments and BGG before posting, you do such a thorough job on this stuff. Thanks!

    Hmm, yeah that does seem to be the way now that I'm looking back on it. It's probably a mistake on my part and the publishers just missed it when they double checked the video, but I've sent your question to them just in case I got it from some FAQ or something and forgot. If they say you're right about it, I'll make sure to add a note. Thanks!

I think dead of winter palys better for a co-op game and players with their own ojbectives. i hate this because like you said its so easy to lose moral that you can use so many options just to tank the moral at one turn its just not fun at all. so you can use just a simple turn to lose moral like hey lets move my character from the non collony to the collony and hope i get bit !!!

    As the old saying goes, "Common sense ain't common." My biggest problem when teaching games to my group is when players decide to have too many side conversations, then decide the rules teach is taking too long and say "let's just start playing", then later say "I didn't know that!" To which I usually reply, "I said it 3 times and told you it was important." The players who were listening proceed to nod their heads in agreement.

    Sadly, this expansion has been a huge letdown for our group. We've waited for it for over a year only to get a small "Prelude"-style expansion. New factions are at least interesting and fresh, leaders are just ok but not great (they are pretty situational and are simply small bonuses, not game-changing additions), but everything else was very lackluster: too few new techs, and those that were added, don't really feel any different at all, just a little variation on the techs we already had, almost no new rules or game systems (apart from Leaders), almost no new events, no variable tree paths... nothing. I mean, there are under 20 cards to add to the base game, apart from leaders, and most of them won't even be seen in a game. And the solo mode was just a slap in the face with "Oh you got all these new factions and leaders in this box? Nope, can't use them with this all-new solo mode, just your basic stuff, or it breaks!" - and the publisher was even lazy enough to not add solo-only techs as replacement, or at least a card with tech change reminder. After a stellar appearance of the base game, the expansion really felt like a cash grab, especially as its price is almost 50% of the base game ($40 RRC vs $85 RRC for the base). It felt like a couple of separate mini-expansions in the box, and shouldn't have been priced at over $20-25, there is just no content inside to warrant the price tag.
