Learn to Hack Your Amygdala to Cope with Fear | Lily Martin | TEDxSaintAndrewsSchool

NOTE FROM TED: Therapies discussed in this talk remain an ongoing field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
How do we overcome our fears? Contrary to popular belief, Lily Martin says you can’t. At a young age, she had to face one of her worst fears: needles. Rather than overcoming her fear, Lily learned how to cope with it by hacking her amygdala. In this TED Talk, she explains how you can, too. Lily Martin is a sophomore at Saint Andrew’s School. She is a driven student who especially enjoys learning about chemistry, artificial intelligence, and the stock market. Lily gave this talk in hopes of helping others gain a better understanding of the scientific aspects of why we have fears and what we can do to cope with them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Listen young lady you brought profound awareness to this 57 year old lady LOL! The ending when you spoke of Batman was astounding to me and I LOVE your concept of how we don't overcome fear we just learn how to face it and work through it in spite of it made so much sense to me! I've never heard it said like that and it makes so much more to me than trying to work hard to overcome something we can't because that wastes a whole lot of time!! What you just stated I'm going to do to face mine and just the thought of doing it your way brings immediate understanding and comfort so thank you so very much for your enlightenment!!!

Wonderful speech. She faced down the fear of public speaking, to tell the story of her overcoming the fear of needles, to speak to the topic of fear itself.

she seemed just slightly inexperienced with such presentations but she's obviously young and I figured still a college student or something like that, this isn't a criticism in any way though and it actually seems fitting; she shows maturity, determination to pass on important information and willingness to learn good job, girl, hope you stay interested and continue to take action to do what you believe is good and necessary

Besides learning, to accept and face your fears. You can also go one step further, which is to accept the pain (in regards to fear of needles). I learned this the hard way through the eighties barbaric dental practise. Back then, they would drill out an extensive amount of the tooth, even with the smallest holes/cavities. And i now have 7 amalgam fillings because of that. I have a vivid memory of me lying there, being in agony of pain while they where drilling. Forcing my body down into the dentist-chair, while clamping/clutching down at the sides of the chair with my hands and with all my strength, and tensioning throughout my entire body, being to scared and in too much pain, to almost even breathe. And then by instinct or intuition and by seemingly not having any other option to cope with, or to get out of the situation, i suddently did the opposite. I somehow accepted that i could´t get out of the situation, i accepted that i was in pain, and completely relaxed throughout my entire body, and relaxed my breath. It all happened instantaneously and while i was still in pain, it somehow wasn't as bad as before, and i understood that by relaxing my body and breath, and by accepting the situation and the pain, it somehow became bearable instead of unbearable. One could suspect that those early experiences, could have given me a fear of dentist, but no. And most dentist are usually surprised of how well i manage the pain, compared with what they usually see.

Hey out there! Do you know fear and excitement has same hormones state level? Only difference is, in fear You think you better step back. And in excitement you think you better step forward. So which one thought you like to choose ? Being excited or being feared?...

That's really overblown by some pseudo news media info, in stress cortisol level is too high, during excitement cortisol and adrenaline levels are on the good enough level, not on overdrive. Difference is mainly because involuntary reaction leads to fear, voluntary should lead to less fear or to excitement but if you don't control situation cortisol is increased. it is not same at all.

When I was eight years old I was attacked by a dog, this accident planted fear in me for the rest of my life, now when I see a loose dog my heart beats harder and louder, it gets even worse if the dog starts to bark at me, at this moment my body will shake. guess I will do just like batman and start facing my fear by adopting a puppy; I think it will be impossible to fear a dog you raised yourself.

Interesting topic. I was searching for talks I could listen to while doing mundane chores around the house in preparation for facing the work I need to do later! The work I need to do causes serious almost paralyzing anxiety due to needing to read through documents filled with unpleasant subjects. So I'm prepping to hijack or hack my amygdala later on this evening. Thanks for the valuable insights! (Yes - talking about the fear helps too - hence this comment!)

I dont think these comic books are dismissing fear, but promoting a control over fear(and emotions in general) A truly courageous man/woman isnt free from fear, but those who have tamed their fear with the reins of reasoning Ps: desensitization is a good method to mitigate the fight or flight reaction
