Learn the FUNDAMENTALS of the Grimdark Miniature Painting Style! PART ONE

Ойындар

Howdy Folks!
The first part of my Grimdark Painting Fundamentals Series is an introduction video where I will be discussing the basic ideas of the Grimdark painting style. The main topic in this video will be on the differences between the ever-popular Games Workshop style vs the Grimdark style of miniature painting and will include important information about the various thinners and solvents used in conjunction with oils and enamels.

So glad grimdark is a thing. As a bad mini painter, I often felt like the warhammerTV way (base acrylic, wash, highlight) was the only way and that I wasn't good enough to depart from orthodoxy. Now thanks to you I know there is another way! Thanks so much for the inspiration! Btw my wife and I bought your Lady Olinder tutorial a bit back and boy was that worth it - an eye-opening experience!

I painted my usual style (Never realllly like the "in your face" gold so i washed and brought down the gold to a bronze/copper look) and then found myself going darker, and darker, AND..darker. Boom, gimdark custodes! and I LOVED it! it also made me realise i don't ned to pain't ALL the model, and rather focus on the zenythal to bring in constrast from light to dark.

Great video!! Good point about thinners. I am so tired of people saying that mineral spirits will dissolve or reactivate acrylic paints. Ive literally never varnished my acrylic coats before putting oil washes, and I have yet to see any of the undercoat dissolve. Marco Frisoni also has a video where he shows a plastic sheet painted with acrylics and he puts pure mineral spirits over the entire thing and none of the undercoat dissolved. Like you said, nothing is dissolving, but if you are having problems then the acrylics either aren't fully cured or the mineral spirits are getting under the paint.

There is a Euro Painter, loves the Bianchu Style, and Grimdark is an evolution of that, but antecedent to your furthering work, I am reminded of my adopted uncle Hunter S Thompsen, "Blood Brother" to my true uncle Earl Biss, a painter in his own right, worth looking up when it comes to hues, shades, tones, and opacities. Thompsen's favorite artist, and his illustrator back in Rolling Stone was a man named Ralph Steadman. I understand your work, though on a game table at four feet it would appear like a greasy smudge, your "realism" the rust and what armor really does look like in the artificial light of a space cruiser. You are highly proficient, dedicated to your style, and humble .... I just hope you pack some bear spray or C/N gas so "you" feel safe and go for a walk barefoot through the grass now and again. In the end H.R. Geiger was reduced to a shut in that just drew dead baby skulls over, and over again. Try and hold to the notion that your work, your depictions of tone shade shine opacity and artificial shadow and light does not consume you. just an alternative view. As for which is more valid - call a quorum of crazy people.

You can also add an isolation coat of clear varnish between your acrylic layer and your weathering layer. Hi can do this multiple times. Do enamels last. Also you can use Windsor Newton or other artists oils, just use a piece of cardboard as a palette - the cardboard will take out the excess linseed oil. Also, don’t use Series7 brushes with oils and enamels - you’ll shorten the life of the brush significantly. Get some Princeton 4050 (I think) artificial sable to use with oils and enamels

Fantastic video. Been thinking of trying my hand at the grimdark style for some time now. Btw care to share just how you got the blood splatter effect on the Lady's gown? That is amazing and exactly how I've pictured painting her but could figure out how to make it look that realistic with the blood

Same, but i havent have painted for 20 years. So im kind of scared to get started. Its just so much to take in. All enamels, oils, acrylic, disolvents etc. As New painter its intimidating. Even if i know this is my style. I love this style.

@Brique Zallivam also imagine doing the games workshop detail level and then using a grimdark finish, you stell get the grimy look but with a lot more detail, grimdark doesn't mean lack of effort or detail work as he tries to sell it here

My Google Fu is weak, but I recall seeing a site where the model painter used cardboard to extract the linseed oil from his canvas oils to get them prepped for making washes. (Thought I had saved that, gah!) He just but dabs of the paint onto raw cardboard and let the oils get leached out for a while. May be worth trying for the folks having trouble getting their hands on the brand discussed in the video here.

You can put the oil paint on a sheet of cardboard to wick the linseed oil out of it. This reduces the shine and quickens the drying time. You can use any good quality oil paint for models, the pigment is actually the important part.

I do appreciate the Grim Dark style as presented, although I am personally a fan of a bit more saturation in the colors. Going too far towards the grim-dark style makes the miniatures pretty boring under average lighting and on the tabletop, requiring more intentional staged lighting for the details to pop.

I agree. However, the average playing environment does not match the aesthetic. Put this style of miniature on a table top that creates an environment of a similar style and well, perhaps your perspective may change. I guess building a playable surface that truly demonstrates the destruction of war is a difficult task, but I personally have always tried to make my table tops look the part. I feel like this is an aspect of the hobby that is severely lacking. Maybe I should make some tables and document the process.

Question about using oils with your W&NS7, I've heard that the solvents play hell with the natural bristles, so I've been using cheap synths for oil work. They are okay but there are times I really want some better control and a finer point (like pin washing). Am I going to dramatically reduce the life of my Kolinsky brushes if I use them for oil washing? I'm careful about keeping the ferrule clear, but washes are sneaky gits!

wanting to get into the grimdark style and was curious that if you are concerned about mineral spirits getting under the acrylic base coat, incase you miss a bit, can you use a matte varnish over the base coat before applying oils/enamels and using mineral spirits?

I would be really interested in learning how to apply the grimdark color scheme to a model with more flesh. Most of the videos you have are mainly armor and I am not complaining cause I love them. Just something different with more flesh tones would be interesting to learn how to do. I have been watching your videos since the first Death Guard video you posted that is no long on here. You have been a HUGE inspiration to me on the way I paint currently.

I find one of the the best ways to paint grimdark flesh is to paint it in something other than fleshtones. Reds, greens and other colors to make your stuff look a little funkier is always fun.

@@jakoballan2768 I have been experimenting with zenythol highlights (Sp? ) then using an airbrush to use blue highlights and purple for shadows. Which leaves a cold dead feel to the skin but doesn't quit fit the rest of my color scheme. I suck at doing pale flesh in general so that is a HUGE weak point I have been working to improve.

Just a quick question, do I let the streaking grime dry completely before I go back with the que tip and mineral spirits? Does this also apply to an oil based wash (such as abtelung 502)? I washed my mini with an oil wash last night and used a hairdryer for 5 mins and it barely dryed it. Still wet this morning. Is this ok? Can I que tip now?

Im stubling into the world of Oil Paints and stuff. I also used enamels when I was a kid (the not so good stuff from revell), so I have no clue... is there a way to prolong brush life when using white spirit and pigments? they tend to lose shape quickly. thats the reason I switched to acrylics when I wasstarting to paint again.

I know this is a shot in the dark given the age of this, but in the current year, what's the best Streaking Grime product to emulate what the original was and what you're doing here? After just becoming enlightened of Grimdark, I also found out about the AKI formula change, so I want to make sure I have the correct streaking grime; especially for my black templars.
