Yes, yes, yes. You have opened a new world of possibilities for me. Once a week I go to a miniatures painting course, but nobody uses oils, or with luck, oils have a very marginal use. I arrived to the miniatures world from military scale models, mainly tanks and planes, but any time I wanted to paint a soldier, pilot or tank crew was a pain in the ass, but, since long, in military models we use oils at least for weathering. So I knew that oils could have its own space in miniature painting. In fact I have been experimenting but only with reduced details. THANKS to discover me this new world. I'm eager to try it!!. Just discovered your channel, and already suscribed.

I have tried twice now with black washes and have had disastrous results both time. the wash does not want to wipe away as soon as 10 minutes later and using a cotton swab with mineral spirits (and some pressure) also lifts off the white base coat. the first time was on plain white spray can and acrylic orange base coat. the second time the white spray and orange was covered with floor wax. I did just noticed that the windsor newton black i have is an "artisan water mixable oil" and was wondering if that might be the problem. any and all advice would be appreciated.
Just want to add - awesome. Rewatched this video like 5 times. More of this style vids, please! More pigments /oils / enamels / fresh blood painting!

That's an awesomely painted miniature, a great technique! I think oils do get a lot of use through the blanchitsu/Inq28/AoS28 side of the warhammer hobby more than the rest of the hobby as a whole. I really enjoyed the video, great quality, informative and entertaining. It was very nicely edited, a touch loud on the intro music but very nice overall. I giggled a little when I saw my Throne diorama pop up on the Inq28 banner, I really should attempt to make a better video to show that off someday. Marco, i was so afraid to mix oil, tamiya and acrilic paints. after saw you use them all in the same proyect i may change my mind, what did you use to seal this miniature?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
5 жыл бұрын
Don't be afraid! Military and tanks modellers mix them all the time 😊 Usually I use AK Interactive varnishes because they work really well with the airbrush but I didn't use any varnish on this one because I didn't want to lose the natural shine of the metal parts. Btw when you start using this approach and you are still not used to oils and pigments could be useful to seal the various steps to play safe 😊

@MarcoFrisoniNJM

Sure, you can use pigments in the exact same way on top of pure acrylics; white spirit and water based paint don't interact between them so there isn't any problem. If you want to go really safe you can first give a coat of varnish but is not really mandatory

Is this painting style possible with oil water mixable paints?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
5 жыл бұрын
I tried to use water based "oil paints" a couple of times but the behaviour of the colours sadly it's not the same. The key of the technique is the incompatibility between the acrylic base and white spirit so using water based paints the same magic doesn't really happen
@meanderingshade
5 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered whether Water Mixable Oils could be used for the same effects Oils and White Spirit are on miniatures. But I've never experienced Water Mixables first hand and don't know what drying times are like using them normally. I might pick up a tube of burnt umber next time I'm at my local art store to experiment... Even if it doesn't work out, I'm sure it could still be used on terrain.

Really great video buddy, definitely taken any worries I had about using oils on acrylics. Time to finish my night lords wig some realistic grime!
Truly inspirational work. I have always admired John Blanche's work and this pays 3 dimensional homage to his chaotic style of painting. I remember reading an article from the early 1980's on how John B' painted his miniatures (this was before citadel paints paint days) and I remember him saying that he used humbrol enamels wet blended. Gonna give the technique a go, awesome work, grate video. Thanks, Jas.

Thanks a million 😊 this is really a huge compliment 😁! Yes at the beginning of miniature painting enamels were the state of the art and when diluted they are quite similar to oils (with the advantage/disvantage of a fast drying time). The general idea is exactly to give up some control to achieve that "artistic chaos" and randomness; Blanche is obviously totally in control of that but we need to cheat a bit... because we are only humans lol
