Learn STAND BY ME by Ben E King - EASY GUITAR lesson
Today I breakdown and demonstrate how to play Stand by Me by Ben E King in this acoustic guitar lesson.
Song sheet download (with tab/chords) jobywaterguitartuition.com/pr...
This is aimed at beginner guitarists. I have included some more novice guitar techniques at the end of the video to help build definition and dynamics.
I have transposed the song into the key of C so we are using the chords C Am F and G. This helped me to be able to include the definitive bass line from the recording. In this key we can move easily between the chords and play the bass line.
All the chords can be played open and are very common chords so will be helpful for beginners.
The original recording of Stand by Me is in the key of A. If you did want to play along with the recording using my chord shapes and bass line you would need to put your capo on fret 9 (fairly high up the fretboard for a capo but it is possible).
The main idea for the transposition was so that we could do an effective beginner version of song on guitar. It also works very well for voices that have a different vocal range to the Ben E King version.
Have fun and enjoy learning this classic song!

I agree with Tang about playing the song in regular playing speed at the very begining so students hear what it will sound like. And you do great as a teacher! . Thank you.

@@jobywaterguitartuition I've been learning Guitar myself through online instructors like yourself. I'm probably past beginner level but I wouldn't say I was at intermediate yet. Can play and switch quite well through the open chords and can do the bar chords. My God it took me ages to get F chord. It felt like I was trying to catch a fly with chopsticks. I play it the traditional way. I can't do that way you play it there. I don't want to be Jimi Hendrix although we do have something in common because I also play left handed. If I could play about a dozen easy 4 chord songs (even with the odd bar chord and palm muting) I'd be happy. Anyway you keep up the good work because I'm sure I speak for many when I say your lessons are enjoyable and not to difficult to follow👍

It sounds like you’re doing great! Well done getting the F chord. That breaks some people 😂 Best of luck with your playing going forwards and again thanks for the feedback. It’s really nice to hear the lessons are working well 😊
Madam excuse me please. In the progression c, a minor, f and g - when to use f when to use g when to use C minor etc. Nobody explains this. Is the progression must be repeatedly played in the same line c a minor F, G again and again or it will come up and down ? sometimes G sometimes C, a minor - in what basis this will go up and down. can you please explain in details ? when the pitch goes high G should be played when the pitch comes down the a minor must be played etc. All the details can you please explain us. Thank you very much I like this video.
@jobywaterguitartuition

Hello 👋 Thanks for your comment and also your question! The chords repeat in the same order throughout the song. The verses and choruses have the same chord sequence. It’s not quite as simple as when the pitch goes or down the chords change. In this song it’s easier to say the C chord lasts for the line ‘when the night has come’ Am ‘and the land is dark’ etc. Does that help? 🎸
Not that transposition isn't a option, I learned this song in G maj, E min, C maj, and D maj. I stopped in to see how this sounded instead. I never thought about trying to sing it in a higher key. Ironically, I just looked up Ben E. King's version and it was written in the key of A. It was a nice video and I enjoyed it. Thanks.
@jobywaterguitartuition

Yes it’s all good. I put it in the vid description. The original is in A but the F# can be challenging for beginners so I wanted to transpose it to a key that gave us the option to add in the distinctive bass line. Having a ref point like that can really help people to recognise a song when they’re learning and it can make it much more enjoyable. For the original key with my chords you would have to capo 9th fret. Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed the lesson. Do you sing along too when you play? 😊👍🎸

Hi! Great that you are learning 😊 thanks for the lovely comment 🙏 It’s true, it’s good to learn from different people. There a lots of things to learn. I assume you have an acoustic guitar? My most basic advice is to say make sure you are playing often, this will make the learning more effective. Make sure you repeat things using the same fingers (avoid swapping and changing as this also takes longer for you to develop the muscle memory). Do you play with fingers or a pick? How long have you being playing? Do you sing along too? Answer these and I can give you some direction 😊👍

@@jobywaterguitartuition Hi, Jo ! Thank you for answer. It was was very kind from you. I've just seen it at Amazon for about USD 1,300/1,400 . But look how terrible is for us, Brazilians: when I selected it to be delivered in my address (Brazil), it doubles the price because Amazon adds import taxes. It's insane. Anyway, I'm willing to the US by the end of the year to buy the guitar, it'll be cheaper. I don't mean to abuse of your kindness, but if you couldgive me this info, it'd help me a lot: I think this model uses steel strings and I need a NYLON one. 2 weeks is hardly anything 😊 keep going! Is this the first song you’ve learned? Try some simpler chords changes like this one - kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6iZzpiqYbXRcqw.html Let me know how you get on 👍🎸

@jobywaterguitartuition I understand 2 weeks isn't long but trust me I dony plan to quit im terrible at everything in life I'm determined to be able to play I practice everyday for no less then 30 min lol and thank you for that link im gonna practice that

@@ajlooney1358 great. 😂 That’s it, keep going! 30mins a day is more than a lot of people do, if you maintain that you’ll see decent improvements. The Stand By Me chords are more stretched out chord shapes so they’ll take longer to get if you’ve only just started. Totally doable though. The Ain’t No Sunshine chords are a lot easier to get used to in the beginning 👍
