This could be a pretty interesting video series, going over each build aspect in depth. The the defenses guide, physical dot guide, stat stacking guide ect. Just covering general build focuses but with lots of tips and tricks that us 1000's of hour casuals still don't know

Yep that is the goal, which is why it's going to be a long running series starting with the basics, and then building on that so when I talk about layering defenses I can say "if you don't understand evasion, watch this" etc.

I just go with simple mindset, like I want to freeze enemies and set them on fire (Hot Ice) Or with bleed to make blood Popsicles. Only issue is scaling it up and finding the right gear for me.

I may be shit at making builds but i enjoy it either way. I feel that this is the main fun for me of this game. I hardly play other people's build. The closest I got to playing other people build is playing it through story then changing it up abit in maps.

my only real gripe with making builds, is the time investment needed to even start trying it. a lot of the builds i'm interested in use level 60-80 gear, meaning before i can even start trying it out, i need to spend hours leveling up the character. which just means i'm not able to really experiment with a lot of options.

I have never made a build from zero. A combination of PoB/Excel feeling too similar (broadly speeking) to my daily job and my hasty personality makes me not want to bother. I kinda get over that for a brief period when I am actually playing a build, I enjoy it quite a lot and want to min-max it or troubleshoot it to fit my playstyle better. For the builds that I really really enjoyed and have been pasionate about, my changes and tweaks were enough to make the original version and mine vastly vastly different. That being said, even though I think I have a good understanding of mechanics and a lot of experience from breaking down builds over the years, I would be very skeptical to make a build from scratch because of 2 factors: 1) I was never interested in PoB dmg numbers... i use that program for other stuff... I evaluate damage by feel in game so I am quite sure I would fuck up the config 2) way too many interactions are not accounted for by pob. These 2 things make it so that I don't have a reference point wheter the build would actually be good or not without testing in-game and that is a bit of a too high opportunity cost for me right now. Things might change in the future, as I am really interested in a CoC KB build (the one that zig-zags) and I can't convince smarter people to make it. So I might try my hand at it.

How to make a good build in PoE? Powerful bases for maximum scaling and synergy of skills. And read everything carefully. In the end knowledge is power in PoE. Understanding the behaviors of skills is key and how to manipulate them to your benefit. 2 people can play the same skills but one knows about shotgunning where a skills damaging effect overlaps and can damage the enemy multiple times in one attack while the other uses the same skill but the strikes or projectiles dont overlap causing the enemy to be hit less times in a single strike/moment.

I've always tried to make my own builds, generally melee builds. Most have failed, but I finally managed to put together a build in 3.18 using viper strike that I was comfortably able to level with and take through basically all non-uber content. The build felt reasonably tanky, damage felt solid, and it played almost exactly how I wanted it to. Ultimately, that viper strike champion is one of my proudest accomplishments in the game thus far, especially since I made/found the vast bulk of his gear, and it is a build that could very easily be done in an SSF manner. I've done a couple of build guides, but I tend to avoid many because they have a tendency to be either very reliant on trading to get the gear you need (I'm not strictly against trading, but I far prefer getting all the stuff myself), or they have a tendency to be big dps and little survivability, or, worse yet, they have survivability that is highly contingent on somehow always having molten shell + every flask active for every time they take damage, which is unfeasible, especially if you have a five-mod drought bringer in your harvest. That's why the first thing I do whenever I look at a PoB is uncheck molten shell and every flask, so I can get an idea of their actual tankiness in a worst-case scenario. Tankiness for 95% of the time means you die 5%, which happens more than often enough to be a problem. Especially when you're as bad as I am.

I'm relatively new to POE, and I've never read in depth build guides. I always try to come up with my own builds, and theory craft what I think looks fun. Thats what I think POE is about, exploring the unknown! That's why I love your show cases too. My builds may always be scuffed, but that's besides the point 😅 I'll never follow a build guide otherwise I will just be pressing buttons while knowing the end outcome which is.....boring.

I've seen both Philosophy's promoted; ie Look up a build and try to follow that, or Don't trying to follow a more experienced/endgame build is not going to work for you because you wont understand the synergies, and your drops as a new player will likely not match the requirements of the build. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2iB1sero9iZaNY.html Remember every 3 months or so you have the opportunity to reset your tree. my first ever playthrough was in delve. i played 100% blind, did my own build (some kind of lightning melee heavy templar) and managed to get to tier 2 maps in ssf sc. ...in 80 hours xD i had a long hiatus after that and came back with scourge ssf. this time i followed pohx' rf guide and made it to the maven, but couldn't beat her. archnemesis ssf i once again based my build on pohx' rf, but put my own decisions to the fine tuning. i finished every non uber boss including the feared. next season, i MAY try my own build. i do not expect to get as far though ;)

    1. Learn how to calculate the dps of your skill in POB so you have a rough idea. This can be complicated, but some creator somewhere has done it, even for minion instability. 2. Look at builds from people you trust and try to balance between defensive, offensive, utility, and life nodes the way they did. 3. Don't waste currency on small upgrades or leveling gear on your first character. 4. Don't give up period. I did srs minion instability in 3.17 up to boss rush red map end game making 2 ex an hour without sweating my lax pacing. Look for ways to push your build further. You may find a real limit, but honestly everything is "viable" with 50 ex put into it. It won't be a top tier build the first 3 times you do this, might not ever be, but you can make 50 ex with a full time job, a kid, and 8 hours of sleep. It may be slower than other people, but every time you learn more about crafting and farming you will get better and better.

Have tried making my own builds many times but didnt finish any of them. Usually I see too low dps numbers in PoB and quit making the build xD I know that I should just put more time in it but the main problem for me is to understand how to scale damage. Like for now I think that a build that just uses x skill and supports it with just a tree without any significant keystones can't exist in PoE. What I mean is that for damage you NEED to double/triple dip it. Find some mechanic that the build can abuse so to say and thats what is hard for me - to find how to make skill x do more damage.

I would appreciate GGG adding in the feature to allow us to pre-plan our trees - even if it is only 10 or 20 points ahead. I often want that next node's power, but I don't want to keep toggling back and forth to my skill tree and then over to my POB I made to make sure I'm following my plan. It would streamline the gameplay. They already have something kinda like this with the Sentinel Controller.

about 95% fail builds, but some made it to juiced t16/bossing(but not uber) my best win was Chieftain Crimson dance EQ bleed, i tried some weird mechanics and defenses like a Jugg with 250% life Dark Pact self cast Blood Magic Low life Pain Attunment with Eternal Youth + Wicked Ward + Zealoth oath, 10k max life (5k unreserved) + 2k5 (pre-gravicious nerf), 1s delay 2k5 life recharge + 800 ES regen (+ Divine Shield + Unbreackable to ES regen) Dark pact is a 10%life sacrifice so didn't stop life recharge, mobs hardly get over the ES and even after there is still 5k HP with 50phys dr 20k armor 80%max ele res, fun but too clunky and slow, at least i've seen the hidden potential of Eternal Youth and i'll keep it for futur variation

My personal check list for damage scaling: Base, Increase, speed, and more. The four fundamental of damage scaling. I consider penetrations and crit in 'more' category and gem level in 'base' category( although you can view it as more when linked to empower). Here is a example of my Brutus lead Sprinkler build. Brutus lead scales str. Now if I play crit, I easily fill up 'Base', 'Increase', and 'more' from crit. Here comes the problem. Where do I scale attack speed? This is why I go zerker because zerker can scale rage and fill up the 'speed' category. Defensive layer can be a nightmare, but I feel good with some armour and extra resistance. I found all good build come to fill up the four categories. Although there are builds like RF that cannot scale from cast speed, but I consider them a constant speed. Since you can't scale it whatsoever, it's already checked and you don't have to be bothered by it. ( Ignite would be quite different. Since it can benefit from 'ignite deal damage faster'. I consider it a speed modifier. Poison, on the other hand only scale by attack speed. 'Poison deal damage faster' only gives quality of life. It doesn't increase your dps at all.)

This way whenever a new item or gem comes out and catches my eye. I try to put it in one of the four categories. Then I can evaluate, is it good enough for me to sacrifice that item slot and get the benefits it gives? If I build around this item, is it possible to fill out the other categories on a budget level?

  • @eprjct

    @eprjct

Usually a good attack build would have something like this: 500dps weapon, 800% increased damage, 10 attack per second and 1000% more damage including crit. Somewhere around this value. Usually something below this is due to defensive reason. If not for defense then this should be quite attainable on a budget.

im trying, i feel like going ssf with a build guide helps you initially. SSF will always give you challenges but with a build guide you at least have an outlier of what to do and the rest you figure out yourself. Tenkei, here is a thought and experience, just for info. I am playing this game from around 5 or 6 years, most of my builds were unsuccessful, like 80% of them, but from time to time, a build went good, good as hell from dmg and survival standpoint. So, for me personally, this is the true beauty in this game. To make your own, not-copied build, and to make it work and clear all content easy. That is when you feel really good, in general. And unlike other games, where you "need" to have exact same build for your class and your role, in order to work, be efficient and taken in parties, Path of Exile offers that individuality: to be the one amongst all who plays the game! No one to play the build like you invented it, not to be copied and slightly modified, and to pass the final check - to deal with ease all content in the game ;) Nice video tho !!!

  • @ahupin

I have been trying to make my own builds with what I like for quite a while now, none have been great successes though. Mainly I see that I try to shove in too many concepts into the same build and therefore things don't end up clicking together. Sometimes a bit less is more. Not knowing how to scale damage properly I try shoving in more concepts together. Dieing too much I shove in more defensive things, but probably not enough of each thing to make a difference. As things don't go great, I don't stick enough with the character and do probably the worst thing: reroll. But then I have enough fun with it all and still play POE with firends and girlfriend so I should be doing something right...

How I learned was in my first league I just tried to play as many builds as I could following guides kind of like Mathil get to red maps and high 80s to low 90s quit and start over. Which gave me a good baseline understanding of a lot of different fundamentals which mainly helped with knowing what rares had some value. The next few leagues I'd start with a guide for a league start but try and alter it to fit me in smallish ways. With my last build of the league I'd try and go completely on my own doing something non meta. After a few leagues I don't even look at guides outside of the entertainment value. You will fail but that is also how you learn. My biggest failure was trying to do a CI Gloomfang build and I didn't know that it completely by passes energy shield spent 3 weeks and 100+ ex crafting this build and went into my first map and died from my first attack spent the next 5 portals trying to figure out if the map had reflect or something like wtf. Took off the amulet and stop getting one shot but my build was completely designed around chaining so without it I could barely clear a t12 map. Much sad but also funny story did cause me to throw up my hands and quit for the rest of that league tho lol

Even after 2.000 hours of playtime I still do not understand crafting for ex, imagine trying a build from scrach. BUT One thing that i always try to do is "personalize" others builds from things that i understand and can control. This is a slow but smooth way of learning. Very exited to see this series!

I've never made my own build, unless you count my very first character that got to level 8 or something. I don't. I have recently gotten a bit more flexible, though - swapping things around on the tree as I feel makes sense. For making my own build entirely... I'm not sure I want to - mostly because of defences. Something kills you, maybe it was a 1hit, or maybe it just did a huge amount of damage. But why? Was it a crit? Is your phys mitigation not enough? Who knows. And this guesswork is what I don't want to deal with. If I knew what kind of damage was done to my character in the 10 seconds before its death, I think I'd be a lot more open to it.

Failed loads of builds, specifically I've been working on a cobra lash build for the last 3 leagues that just seems to hit a ceiling. It's a work in progress and I'll keep at it until it works as well as it needs to, then polish it some more. 3.18 was a success for me, I got a decent run with an SRS Instability build which after the manifesto I've decided will be my league starter. More builds fail than work but once you have a working build that you like and understand, you have a great template until it's nerfed and does to the point it truly can't be fixed. I could follow a guide but that takes away the fun. I read/watch them to learn, not to use as a cookie cutter and I feel like the game is richer for it. In fact, /raisehand I'm a PoE addict.

Very helpful video, i am a player who has only played 3 or 4 seasons seriously, always wondering if im doing the right thing. I have spent two of those seasons following build guides and don't enjoy having somebody else tell me exactly what to do. I have the urge to try and figure it out myself even if it means a less successful build. Your explanation of the correct mindset for approaching a build helps me have a framework for approaching things, tyvm.

Restarted the game. Had some success with someone's build. Now wanna use my own. Thank you for the tips. I disliked how nearly every thing I saw was 'Max your DPS, I can't stress this enough' I like balanced builds, or fun builds. After all, I'm playing a game, I should have fun. If that means I'm jumping across the screen and just knocking down enemies and not killing them, but just getting a laugh at knocking them down. I'll do it. So far POE community seems pretty nice. Could just be the new guy sent tho.

One way to do this with a bit of a safety net, find a build from a creator you trust that you want to play. Don't look at what they did. Then make your own. If you run into problems, try to solve them. If you ever get truly stuck, look at what they did.

Late to the party, but you did ask... My first build and my thoughts on the experience? Well, it sounds a lot like how this video started. I was originally playing back when acts 3 & 4 were the end game and player hideouts were first introduced. Back then you could run just about anything and make it work with whatever you found along the way or had stashed from a previous run... and then I put the game down for several years. Coming back near the end of Crucible League? Hoo boy. Totally different ball game. Exponentially more mechanics and content, emphasis on build guides, people talking like the campaign is just something you have to knock out fast because endgame is the whole game now, and the importance of engaging with the trade economy... well, it all feel a little... grumble grumble. When it comes to secondary content, I'm mostly reading/watching SSF friendly stuff, because to me, well, if you *have to* follow a strict build guide, then the game might as well not even have all the complexity and I might as well go play something with a set number of fixed classes and a by the numbers walkthrough on the best towns to buy the best gear at. Don't get me wrong, I like the growth in content and complexity.... I'm just not so fond of how optimization seems to have become a requirement rather than a personal challenge or how so many of the community metrics revolve around grinding currency and gaming the trade market.

My experience with making my own builds has been core to me having fun in path of exile. I started in delirium and by heist, I decided to make an earthquake bleed champ. It started by me wanting to play a tank build, that didn't need to hit fast or go fast, not using crimson dance and going lacerate like the rest, it would simply be an immovable juggernaut for content and I succeeded. It was cheap, it did 2m DPS and I could easily have pushed more and it was unkillable. Enduring cry, life leech, life Regen, recovery on block, block cap, 10k molten shell, flesh and stone. From the end of heist where I knew I could league start it to the end of ritual in which I had my most fun ever, it was the build I loved and still yearn for. And it was apparently a meta build, but I didn't know, not after the fact of me having fun fighting kosis on 100% deli for 25 minutes. I farmed a HH with it and then found one more on Cadibro(RIP). Since then, I was never able to make my own build. I can't find anything interesting to even try and make it work, it feels I always need to dump 40 exalts to make even somewhat reasonably ideas work.

I’m kinda new since 3.15 and still don’t understand damage scaling as well as I would like. I understand the difference between “more” and “increased” modifiers, and it seems the goal is to get the highest possible base damage with as many more multipliers as possible. But even when I do that, it seems like I can’t get my damage to scale to the level pro build creators can. I would love to see a video on this topic, all the ways of scaling damage - “more”, “increased”, “added” damage, “effectiveness of added damage” on gems, damage conversion, flask effect buffs, etc.

Once i a while i try to make up builds, but they end up squishy or ineffective. I once made an inquisitor with a whispering ice. The concept was to cast while channeling Stormbind ! I even added knockback to use icestorm as a way to pushback ennemies while channeling the runes. Didn't scale the damage enough, took too much time to deal damage, and too static. Worked to an extent in party play with a friend, but not in solo... Still wondering if there's a way to use cast on melee kill on any build... I guess the big problem with PoE is that the knowledge data base is too big, always inflating, with skills and item border useless. And since GGG's balance revolves more around nerfing the meta to increase difficulty for the pro/streaming players, and not about allowing more leniency for the sake of creativity, it will remain very hard to build something from scratch.

  • @Tenkiei

This video series is great. This is how I've always felt abt POE: I only started last year sometime, but the entire appeal of the game to me was the giant tree and customization of playstyle. Using someone else's build just takes away all the fun and accomplishment. I've played one build per league, skipping leagues here and there, and the highest I ever made it was t10 maps. I'm cool with that. I learn a bit each time and I always play skills I like, with weapons I like, on characters I like. It's such a different experience than most have with poe, but it's satisfying to me.

Hi, this is pretty late, but I'll comment anyway. In general I try to make my own builds, but I started playing in Delirium league. I consider most of them successes, simply because each of them have been trying to get further than the last. I have gotten to the point of being able to make builds that can do t14-16 maps + bosses comfortably and I like delving and heist, but lately that's where I've stalled. PoE's midgame seems pretty horrific. You really need to have a strategy for farming when you get there and then have some understanding of how to transition to endgame builds or scaling your current build up further. So far I've either a) don't really know how to farm or what TO farm or b) anything I can think of to get more out of my build is a price hike from 20chaos to 5 div or more. All the changing league mechanics and other mechanics don't help either. The atlas change really took a while to get used to and I'm still not comfortable with the new passive tree. Hopefully you did start that series so I can go check it out. Good luck on the new league!

My 2 Failures: My 1st build was Cobra Lash Assassin in blight (Daggering Lv79 barely able to kill Kitava in Act 10 and do some t1 maps) - first failure. My latest failure was in Archnemesis league where I tried to make Galvanic Arrow Trinity Raider (GalvanRaiRaider Lv84 just not enough dps to go through Rare enemies, and now is completely bricked) You could say My Wins: SkeleMages Necromancer in Ritual (Skellchy Lv87 Good Clear speed and boss speed, never done any pinacle stuff). Caustic Arrow Trickster in Ultimatum (Venomin Lv87 Standard CA build and pre-jet-again-nerf to Trickster) and Bane Ocultist in Scourge (DaWithc Lv87 Just-Bane-things and Hex(es)) And my latest Absolution+HoP Guardian (Sentilneliomon LV90 YAY I can touch and kill some pinacle bosses). Every time I play this game I'm either starting a new build or continuing one I was previously building. I fail quite often in making a build that survives into endgame, however, I always learn from those failures. Currently I'm doing a Shadow Mines build focusing on Pyroclast Mine, I have yet to equip a single aura(excluding Skitterbots) and am finding different auras to be a compelling addition for different encounters. I'm still not in maps so I feel little reason to commit to an aura just yet... But I'm definitely swaying towards one of the Purity auras. I think it's super fun to just create a new character and see how I can shape them into an interesting or wacky build.

What I have started to do instead is pick one kind of build that has interesting synergies and see how effective I can make it. Right now that is a Corpse Walker/General's Cry build. I built it last 3 seasons ago and this season I think I know enough to make it actually kill bosses without too much trouble instead of just being a clear build. I guess we will find out. =)

My damage is like a burst when I get 75 rage and I use berserk / molten shell + molten strike (with 5 support gems) to tear through stuff. I still use 2 vaal skills a totem and slam which are becoming under powered now but still good to use after berserk runs out / my rage. Hello Ten, I'm really excited to learn more about creating our own build.... I've +10y of POE and never tried my own, my first concern, and maybe this is my first error as well, is about time! I don't have many hours to play daily usually 1 or 2 max... so I'm always afraid of starting something and realize that I made wrong decisions on the way of that specific build and there's no turning back... or the time spent to fix is higher than creating a new char... both ways will consume a lot of time. Also, in the middle of this whole thing we could be on the start of a new league and when your build is not performing you're not experiencing new mechanics etc... I definitely can see that planning, testing and creating your own could be really fun... it's like playing a different POE... anyways... learning about defenses and how to scaling damage (idk, maybe a diagram on those topics) could be really helpful to people, even when following builds... sorry about the long comment! 😄

I made my own builds since Ritual league, I did manage to kill Rigwald at lvl 70. That was high for me, I managed to make a T4 talisman, and that those were my goals. I had not killed Uber atziri at this point ever. In Perandus league I made a triple dipping chaos damage ice trap, cold to fire, fire to chaos, poison build. In 2022 that sounds like crazy talk, I did around 2 billion DPS with maximum poisons. I one shot Uber atziri, that was the first time I had tried Uber atziri and it was amazing to slay her. Back then tripple dipping working like this. Elemental overload 40% more damage to my cold damage, that I converted to fire damage, it got 40% more damage. For spell it would be 40,40,40% So I had 1000 average damage, and 5 sockets with 40% more damage worked 3 times. That is an 16 link. That is 1000x1.4 15 times. That is 155,568. Of course it did not work exactly like that, because we did not convert 100% of the damage. If we did convert 100% of the damage and if we had 5 supports that did work on all types of damage such ad trap damage support, then it would totally have gotten you a multiplier of 155. I used 1 support to convert and 2 daggers. It was a super cheap build. I got my easiest 6L ever, 1 jewelers orb and 4 fusing, a 3l to a 4l to a 5l to a 6l freaking fucking amazing! I was part of the people who invented aura stackers back in delirium league, I used my huge amount of cash to get my bro a full aura stacker for himself. It was freaking beautiful. My bro went and made a super tank, he could stand in sirus storms for days. And then he enjoyed killing him from inside of the storms for revenge for all his other characters. xD amazing stuff. My latest success is a transendance Berzerk, it can survive anything and deals 50mil DPS. During deep delving. Now I am going to upgrade him with a secret strat that I am inventing as I am writing this. Olroth resolve. How can that be OP? I can negate the last 600 damage on me. With transendance I can barely take any damage, I am taking 6 life nodes on the tree, rest is damage. I have 2800 life, I can survive Mavens memory game, sirus meteors deals 900 damage on me without molten shell. That is reduced to 90 with Olroth and molten shell, 300 without molten shell. That is a tank. I could go Cheif, and take the special marauder node, then I take 0 damage from meteor. That is tank.

First of all I want to say that I love your POE videos! Ok, now answering your question about making builds I can say that making my own builds in POE is a thing that making me play this game for over 8k hours now. On beggining of my jurney with POE I`ve tried to do some build from KZread and when I did that, it was maybe 30 mins until Ive delete whole character from game, because I can`t play it, I`ve had that unconfortable feeling like playing GTA Vice City on downloaded 100% game save. Since than all characters Im playing are my own builds, 75% of them can`t do even T6 maps, but its fine, I can learn from my own mistakes and use my small succeses on new build. Now after 3 years of making builds I can do build what can clear T16 easy and do some bosses in less than hour and share them with my few close friends, who are happy to try make them in game, even they know it might don`t work at all. And thats the think what I`m enjoying the most in game. I hope this answer make some sense and sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Poland and thank you once again for making so enjoyable content about POE. Stay sane exile. Peace

Ive tried making my own builds a couple times, and usually gave up around maps when i realized i misunderstood or didnt know about certain mechanics involved with what i was doing. Usually i will edit other builds off of streamers or yt or poe.ninja to get the characters i end up playing. But my favorite build I have ever played I made 100% from scratch. In harvest league I made a full lightning damage mind of the council mana stacking burning arrow elementalist. Nobody on poe.ninja at the time was using mind of the council, and i couldn't find mind of the council burning arrow anywhere else online. It ended up with around 3-4mil dps and was reasonably tanky, especially with agnostic. Although it was harvest league, i didn't have enough time to play and get perfect uber gear that everyone else was getting, which to me meant that my build was actually perfoming better than I could have hoped. To this day I still want people to give Mind of the Council a try since it actually synergizes with mana stacking extremely efficiently, but I also know that with omeyocan nerfs and mana nerfs in general that it probably isnt going to happen any time soon lol.
