I feel like the resources finding can be the hardest. Like you can watch tv and go online but its so different to have an actual conversation with someone in person. When living abroad i had two friends from France and they knew my french was good so they would speak mostly in french to me and force me to talk back to them in french to practice. I learned more colloquial french from them in 4 months than i ever had in school. Hopefully back home I can find more french friends to have fun with while also practicing

Thank you for sharing your story, Geraldine. I studied French for about 6 years total in high school and university MANY years ago, and then lived in Paris for 3 years not so very long ago. My French was not bad and I had no trouble using it my professional life and in just getting around. I joined the Club Alpin Francais branch in Paris to hike in the area and meet people, and it was a real revelation. People spoke so fast, used more vernacular than I knew, plus we were outside walking! I always felt as I understood about half of the conversation and by the time I thought of something intelligent to say, people had moved on to a new topic. It was exhausting but I kept plugging away. I need to add that everyone was always very nice to me, put up with my bad accent and grammar mistakes. It must of been something similar to you felt in the UK. I discovered Comme Une Francaise after I returned to the US and have been a pretty regular viewer of your weekly videos and have taken a couple of courses. I feel that I have learned so much about how everyday spoke French and the culture that I wish I had know while I was actually living there! I continue to want to maintain/improve my French because living in Paris was truly a dream and I just loved every minute I was there.

You are doing pretty fine !

The best language advice I ever heard was from Khatzumoto, who became fluent in 18 months in Japanese while as an African student studying in Utah. "YOU DON'T LEARN A LANGUAGE. YOU JUST GET USED TO IT." The secret? Use the language, think in the language, converse in the language, write in the language. Non-stop. Use the the same method we all used to walk. Do it until you master it.

This sounds ridiculous, but I go online to find magazines written in French just to read the words and will try to figure out what the sentences mean - I only do this with subjects I really know (like music). And if I get stumped I turn to my English-French dictionary. It helps more with my reading.
