Keep in mind that I am not a Sindarin expert and these videos are just for fun; with that said, thank you for all the support so far and enjoy the third episode!

I don't plan on doing more strictly Sindarin videos, but surely I'll do more language learning content. The best resources for further learning have to be some KZread videos, especially with really passionate hosts; and online forums, but not the weebly site (there is like a forbidden one 😀 ). And I recommend setting a goal and just going through the whole internet. As I've said, try to find knowledgeable and passionate people, I always tried to learn from those so I wouldn't make a mistake in my videos. Good luck.

@Artreii

Hmm, while it's hard for me to find just a quick association to such a long sequence, it always stuck in my head because I heard words like "dog", "quenya" and "thong" in it lol. I'd say... maybe try making up a sequence of English words that would sound similar (basically repeating the Elvish one so much that you create a sentence in English, if that makes sense).

Here’s what I want to know: how did the 2nd person suffix change from “-ch” to “-g”? In Two towers when they see Gandalf again Aragorn asks Legolas “Man cenich? (Kenich)” a breathy h like german Ich. And in neo Sindarin it’s changed to “g”. ?
@cestlavie3572
Жыл бұрын
Originally the "-ch" ending was attested in an untranslated text published in the late 1950s called the "Turin Wrapper", within the phrase, "man agorech". As no translation was provided, this phrase was assumed to mean "what have you done", thus giving us the "-ch" suffix for second person singular. But in later years more information was published regarding the pronominal suffixes of Sindarin, and it turns out that "-ch" is really an exclusive first person plural pronoun, with "-g" as the familiar case second person singular pronoun and "-l" as the reverential/formal case. (Tolkien later adapted "-ch" into a second person dual pronoun, but sticking to the publications made closer to the time period that the "Turin Wrapper" was published [i.e. 1950s], "-ch" is an exclusive first person plural pronoun.) Thus with this knowledge, "-ch" was abandoned and replaced with "-g" and "-l" for second person. At the time the Lord of the Rings movies were made, this was not yet known, so "-ch" was used for second person singular.

@@cestlavie3572 so is -ch then a relic suffix like the discarded Doriathrin endings for dual?

@@jackwooten2374 Yes, it is currently considered to be archaic, and is generally avoided in Neo-Sindarin.
