This thing with a launchpad is way more enticing than Ableton with Push. Bitwig sound design capabilities is just insane. Add CLAP over it...game over.

I just wanted to share what has been a real game-changer for me by switching to bigwig. One license allows you to run it on up to 3 computers. I have one installed on my windows PC, one on my Mac mini, and yet another one on my Debian Linux laptop (which had to be converted to Linux because Windows 10 slowed it down too much). I couldn’t be happier. I’ve licensed about 9 different DAW products over the past 2 decades and I can honestly say I am thrilled with Bitwig. It’s not perfect but it’s the best fit for me. I still load up Studio One when I record bands or have to do tempo mapping with warp markers but I’m happy to pull the results into BW and continue from there. It’s the best creative tool for music production.

Very nice Tutorial. For those who are considering Bitwig but have problems figuring out everything: I know the frustration, especially if you are switching from FL-Studio and Cubase. You open the program and play around a bit then can't find something and alt-F4 with frustration. To overcome this, try to make one of your project (done in your FL or Cubase or whatever.) you will go back and forth but only this way the bitwig makes its sense and will become fun. Yes the piano roll lacks somethings. The automation are different. there is no theme editor (yet), it does not have the fluid transport like FL and so on, but it has absolutely awsome features and for me , I feel safe and organized when I am trying to arrange the project. Just spend 2 weeks and then you'll have fun with it.

I've got Bitwig, since I wanted to stay Linux. Now if I'd have to go Mac / Win, I'd still use Bitwig. When you use it there will be a point of no return, it will win your heart. Didn't expect that from a piece of software.

Worth mentioning that the hybrid tracks are incredibly useful! I use bitwig to sequence a lot of hardware synths, and if there’s a portion of the track where you want to manually control the cutoff knob to build up a drop, but you’re still in the process of arranging your track etc, you could real time bounce-in-place just that one section and leave midi on all the rest of your track to continue editing in variation or shifting things around.

Thank you for this cool video. I will see it again. So many FEatures to learn and have fun with.

Last December, for my birthday, I treated myself… I decided I’d had enough of Windows 10 and bought an M1 Mac Mini, Bitwig Studio and upgraded VCV Rack 2 to the VST version… Frankly, as far as sound design on a computer is concerned, the best move I have ever made. Bitwig and VCV were made for each other (Omri Cohen has an excellent video on this pairing) and there aren’t enough hours in the day to explore the possibilities but, holy shit is there some serious fun to be had! The Hardware modules in Bitwig are brilliant as well as they combine the midi out/audio return in one plug in so, if I want to bring in an external synth, I simply chuck a HW module into a track and there it is, no messing. I have all my hardware permanently wired up to an 8 channel interface so they’re always in the same inputs… Excellent video Alex 👍

Its okay to use both. Studio One was my primary tool but now BW is. I still use Studio one to record and mix bands but I create music in BW. I hope that BW improves the warp marker workflow so I can take recordings done without a click track and tempo-map them, but until then, I still use Studio One for that process. I didn’t bother upgrading to Studio One v6 precisely because they refuse to improve their MIDI processing tools and refuse to improve midi routing. Using products like uJam and Instacomposer are a breeze in BW. I can’t go back to S1 for that.

  • @TerenceKearns

I think Cakewalk also complements BW really well. The way CW handles general MIDI is perfect. Also it has vocal alignment built in to it which is not built into any other DAW and costs hundreds of dollars to buy an equivalent plugin. I still have a soft spot for CW.

Madeira is a set of islands off the coast of North Africa. The Portuguese discovered it 500+ years ago. Amazingly there were no previous inhabitants as I understand it. Grapes and bananas grow well there. The grapes are used to make the famous Madeira wine. It is a sweet desert wine. It is different although not unlike Port wine which is named after the city of Oporto in Portugal. I didn't understand your first guess (sounded like 'cure'). I also assume Madeira cake is made with Madeira wine. Madeira is a Portuguese word which means wood. Thanks for the video.

@@patcupo Are you an Ableton user as well? I'm really contemplating on jumping into Bitwig because it seems that there are so many amazing possibilities it offers. But I need something for live performances. I'm assuming Ableton dominates the live performance realm. There aren't really too many videos on Bitwig for DJs or for live performances for bands. I hope that becomes a thing. What are your thoughts on this?

  • @patcupo

@@nomad1517 I've used Ableton for 15 years and still reach for it occasionally. I don't perform much anymore, but I'd be comfortable going on stage with Bitwig. It has a clip launcher with scenes, Play Modes (Follow Action in Live, though Live has the Scene follow actions now, which I like), a crossfade, return tracks, etc. Warping/stretching audio works well in Bitwig, and there are more algorithms to choose from. I prefer controller mapping in Bitwig, for sure. Great effects and presets (some of which I've contributed to the library). So yeah, you could DJ in Bitwig, absolutely. I'd suggest downloading the demo with the goal of creating a small performance set. Have your wish list of features and check something off when you've achieved it.

I’ve managed some basic stuff but it’s clearly an old fashioned workflow that doesn’t suit B. W. 18:00 Actually BitWig was created by the original developers of Ableton LIVE. The Developers when they were working at Ableton, they had a huge fallout because the corporate suits & investors wanted something else, and the developers were trying to create a daw for musicians based on feedback. When both did not agree, the original developers got angry & had enough, then left Ableton LIVE company and created their own DAW which is now BitWig.

I think Bitwig has a lot of potential but for me the most important aspect of any DAW is: EASY/INTUITIVE to use! A beginner should be able to navigate and understand everything easily without having to watch hours of KZread tutorials. While Bitwig does have a lot of intuitive features it still requires some tutorials and education for someone like me who is between beginner - intermediate when it comes to DAWs. For now I'll stick with Garageband, Logic Pro X, and FL Studio but Bitwig is on my radar for the future. ✌️

@@Gear4musicSynthsTech I watched this to see if Bitwig was a good fit for me...unfortunately it's not but maybe one day. I would say Bitwig leans towards intermediate - advanced DAW users where as I'm more beginner - intermediate. I don't need too many fancy features so Garageband, Logic, and FL cover everything for me. I prefer using hardware most of the time and DAWs for editing, arranging, and mix/mastering. I have even considered 100% DAW-less recording with something like a Tascam Model 12, Tascam DP24SD, or Zoom R24. Add my keyboard, guitars, drums, mics, synths etc. and I'm all set. To each their own though. ✌️

Trying to follow along and just do exactly what you guys do in the vid, but I'm stuck at the "Operators: Adding Variety" section. The repeat operators don't change the sound at all for me. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've never used a DAW before (besides Audacity) so I feel a little lost.

16:22 one question- how can I do pitch variations of one sample? The problem I see is if we move note up/down, it will play different sample. Can I do for example- a pitch sweep snare roll?

Good question. Select the instrument track with Drum Machine on it and then select EDIT at the bottom-left of the interface to view the Edit Panel, where you can automate parameters. To the right of the EDIT button is another button called Device Panel - click it to show the devices on the track so you can click on the parameter you want to automate. Find your way to the Sampler that has the snare sample loaded, click on the Pitch Transpose knob (left-hand side of Sampler), and you'll see that Pitch is now in focus in the Edit Panel above. Now you can make a sweet pitch sweep via automation.

18:40 I do not see this grey velocity ramp, Bitwig Studio 4.3.2. Is there any trick to enabling this feature? Edit: working now, this ramp is only available for notes with the repeat operator. It does not work for regular, indenpent note events unfortunately.

If you select the Pen tool (press 3), then you can draw velocity ramps on any notes in the Velocity expression lane.

@@patcupo Cheers for getting back - this does get me a ramp for sure, I was kind of hoping for a ramp that includes the relative velocities of the individual notes. Effectively take every note's own velocity and multiply it with the ramp function. I guess I am asking a bit much and my question wasn't even obvious to understand. Still, it would be a nice feature. Basically an operator working on multiple notes.

Anyone know of good sites or resources to find people that are willing to trade DAW licenses? After switching to Linux, I realized that Live does not have a native Linux build. I'd love to move to Bitwig but don't want to buy a second daw and leave Live 11 to collect virtual dust.

Hey - there's actually a crossgrade available right now from any qualifying DAW (including Live) to Bitwig Studio, so you could grab it now for quite a bit less, it ends 4th September! www.gear4music.com/Recording-and-Computers/Bitwig-Studio-4-Crossgrade-From-Qualifying-DAW-Digital-Download/41WR

I’ve been considering giving Bitwig a test drive. Is the DAW geared more towards EDM? I see the Bitwig to Ableton comparison quite often. My main DAW is Studio One, but I also use MixCraft 9 Pro Studio, and occasionally Cakewalk (BandLab).

Everytime I start a track in 5.1, get into it the program crashes outright, or freezes. It’s certainly annoying on my overpowered rig.

When yous elected the tempo number you forgot to say how you were doing it! which you can do by: clicking on the tempo number a very small vertical double arrow appears and then you can slide sliding the mouse up and down to increase or decrease the tempo number.

Did you know that there is a pointer app that allows you to clearly and helpfully show where your pointer is and where you are clicking so that your viewers aren't left confused and click away from your videos? this omission is only too common and I wonder why?

How much are the private courses ? Is there a standard way of getting a workflow going ? cause the instruments are so cryptic it’s horrifying and seems to be driven by shortcuts and key commands which by their very nature are extremely off putting and non intuitive to a new user . I’m just now checking it out managed to create a song but I still haven’t connected with it because of the shitty bitwig plugins with teeny weeny trims and ridiculous features that give zero feedback period especially things like side chain or ducking etc which I was told is very simple to use but just sits there looking cryptic giving no indication if I’m even using it correctly sonically or otherwise . Very discouraging from the get go . This daw is anything but intuitive . Let me know how to reach out for lessons I’m having serious issues getting comfortable with it. 👽✌️
