Learn about the SCOTTISH accent, dialect, and slang!

Dae ye talk Scots? In Scotland, locals speak English, but they have their own dialect, which means a set of different words that aren't used in England. At first, the accent might also be difficult to understand. There might be a lot of vocabulary that you have never heard before. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you common Scottish vocabulary and fun phrases in my best Scottish accent! Depending on who you ask, "Scots" is either a dialect of English, or it’s vocabulary that is considered a local slang. However, if you are visiting Scotland, the difference in language is close enough that native English speakers can understand most of it easily. The Scots language spoken in Scotland varies depending on the region. Therefore, in this lesson, I will include the most well known Scottish vocabulary as well as some examples of Doric phrases (North East Scots). Be sure to make fun of my attempts at the Scottish accent!

Scots is a language and recognised as such on the Scottish census. Yes many scots speak english , over a million and a half speak scots. They are distinct languages with a common ancestor , in much the same way nordic languages have a common ancestor in old Norse and therefore have mutual intelligibility.

Years ago I went to Scotland and it turned out to be one of the best experiences I've ever had. We were lucky with the weather and with all the people we met along the way. I specially remember the day we went to Stirling. At the end of the day we dropped in a pub and the locals gave us a very warm welcome and created a friendly ambience so we stayed for a long while drinking and chatting with them. Needless to say that we spaniards with our BBC english barely understood what they said. I even asked if they spoke Gaelic ! Fortunately a kind man patiently "translated" for us what the attendees were telling and we all had a very funny and interesting evening. I strongly recommend to visit Scotland, moreover it is a very nice country. Best regards for all the scots out there.

Scottish sounds a lot more like a germanic language than English does. Reminds me of Dutch for some words.

I enjoyed the lesson. The most difficult aspect of learning Scottish pronunciation from Spanish is the vowel sounds and diphthongs. As for the consonants, they even roll their R's.

Can it be, that Sassenach is a word from the Gaelic and means an english speaker? The most Scottish people are speaking Scottish english ore Scotts (that's another thing like Scottish english), I think they are also told Sassenachs... The ending "-ch" in Scottish english is not pronounced as "-k", as far as I know, it's spoken after "i-" ore "e-" as "-ich" like in Ipswich. And "Loch Lomond" is famos for his false pronounciation fro english people (with "-k")... The rolling-R is not only a special thing in Scottland, it's also usual in many parts of England (the southwest, west and north) Only the middle and the east of England are not rolling the R. In the scottish accent they don't hide the R, they pronounce it.
