    I remember watching a video of a Swedish guy hiking and he filmed as a bear started following him up the mountain. They cannot carry guns over there (sadly), so the next best thing would've been for him to carve two spears from tree logs or sticks (before encountering the bear, obviously) and use the blunt ends as walking sticks. If a bear comes into your camp, you have axe and knife, no gun (imagining), now what? All that time the person sat there looking at the fire in their comfortable complacency, they could've carved 3-4 spears from tree logs or sticks. Have a few extra to launch at the threat, and 2 of them to dual wield for CQB. Selfdefense is layered, not to be reliant on only 1 or 2 items. Use our weapons to create more weapons. I'm sure you already knew this, and would be cool to see you show it in video. ☺️

    Many of these skills apply anywhere in the world. We live in the tropics where warm or hot weather and high humidity are the norm. A bit over 100 klicks north of our home base, there is a mountainous area. Trust me, it can get frosty up there. We have never seen snow but frost will suck the heat from your body. Thank you for yet another superior teaching video.

    Loved the video. 👍👍 A note on the Sasquatch bed. Like sleeping bag ratings, that 4" (compressed) is a "survival" rating. For a truly comfortable bed, increase material depth 2-3x. You can do this with all grass, or if material is in short supply, use boughs, etc, for the bottom layer. My favorite way to sleep in the woods! I also make my bottom two logs longer on my long fire for a convenient cooking platform.

    If there is no grass, will leaves and duff work similarly or do you need to gather more material?

  • @carrdoug99

    @carrdoug99

    4 ай бұрын

    @michaelmcewan2364 leaves will work, but you'll want to collect more (they compress more). Leaves will tend to be wetter, too. If you're in an area with a lot of ferns, those work great. Regarding compression, on day two, you'll probably want to add your top cover to the base and gather more grass for the top layer (you're generally fine from there on).

    In some Midwestern and Western farm country various stands of field corn can be found unharvested all winter. The ear corn can be shucked, shelled, and ground to supply a generous supply of corn meal. The corn meal can be combined with deer tallow to help keep dogs strong and healthy. Expert utilization of rabbit can provide a further fully nutritious meat supply. Starving on a diet of rabbit can thus supposedly not be inevitable.

    Sir, T Y again. Another Power Point Competition Grand Slam. Such good effort & product! Dog mushers back in the day would often rely on cornmeal & "dog tallow" to nourish the dogs. Feeding moose meat to dogs has long been illegal in Alaska, but moose tallow surely is legal? I had to put down a couple of road hit moose in Yukon, but did not get to see the dressings-out salvage to see how much fat they carried. Lucky to find your neighbor's deer heart, so you didn't have to eat that neighbor. Hunger may be the best sauce, but subfreezing temps raise the bar. Some kind of thin glove is desirable to wear inside mitts to keep skin from freezing when exposed. Bare hands in leather chopper mitts are sometimes enough for working.
