I sure wish this had a much better ending in real life. Although east side was temporarily saved because the kids passed the reading aptitude test, they failed the math part of it badly and eventually the state did take over the school, then years later, it became a alternate campus learning center minus the Eastside name

You can tell that he really cared about Sam's, he took it really easy on him at the end when he told him calmly to go back down stairs, he just wanted to get his point across and I always believed that Mr Clark was low-key proud of him because out of all the other kids that were kicked out Sam's was the only one that came back for one more chance, I think Mr Clark respected him for that, I love this movie, definitely a true classic......

I thought I was tough and said under my breathe "F..k off" This guy was retired Navy and there was zero chance he was going to take that. Right in front of all the students he put one hand on the side of my head and the other hand smacked me hard to the other side. I had a choice right then... Take it like a man or a little bitch. I knew he cared about me. Within 2 months I had quit smoking, drugs, and alcohol. I never went back. Halloween is 35 years sober. My teacher helped save my life. Thank you Mr. White RIP

These kids walk miles to get to a crowded, dilapidated classroom for the chance at an education so that they might escape the cycle that so many get stuck in. That's why kids over there are way more advanced in school subjects.

Can't watch this without thinking of In Living Color's parody "Lean On Me, Beautiful", where Joe is sent to a beauty school. He confronts one student and forces him to admit he wears chemicals in his hair, that he's ugly, and that his parents are ugly, too. The kid who played Sams got busted about 10 years ago for buying 200 lbs of pot. The cops later found another 100 lbs in his apartment. He skated with probation, but was caught with 5 or 6 lbs of weed in 2018 and got a suspended sentence and probation instead. Amusingly enough, the sole bit of trivia on his IMDB page is that he became a grandfather at age 34.

I found this VHS at my grandma's house when I was a kid. Had no idea what it was but damn it was intense. I had a lot of respect for Mr. Clark because I knew first hand how kids act when there's no structure and no one willing to put their foot down and lead by example. When you see that the BOSS isn't gonna budge then you either fail out or fall in line. My favorite part of this film was seeing the halls all cleaned up and hearing the new high school anthem. These kids gained respect for their Principal and their school but more importantly, respect for themselves and each other.

In the In Living Color parody, Joe Clark is sent to run a beauty school and he berates a student for using products on his hair and forces him to admit that he's ugly and that his parents are ugly as well and has no business telling anyone how to be beautiful while the student cries just like in this scene.
