Leach 2R-II: Queens County Carting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yet again the Leach 2R-II shows off why it's king of the streets. Old pallets and wooden dunnage are but a light snack for the venerable Packmaster. Scott and I found this one on two separate occasions in Manhattan last July. First off was a job in SoHo around 8 A.M. Something really really big packed in wooden crates and apparently made in Italy was being delivered out the back of a 40 foot shipping container. Queens County's Leach had been dispatched to dispose of all the packing material. And there was quite a bit of it. Afterward both Scott and I then got a chance to watch the driver show off his shifting prowess and take in the amazing sound of the engine (read below) from up close, as he made his way to the next job also located in SoHo. The next day we again stumbled on the same truck and driver in Midtown munching on some more conventionally sized pallets.
The middle aged 2R-II is standard fare. Equipped with an A-frame bin lift under the hopper sill and winch up top, with a second roller mounted out on a jib for better positioning of the cable over the hopper. What really stands out is the chassis, a beast of a Western Star with the old Heritage cab. Not sure of the exact year but just for reference the modern, larger Constellation cab was introduced in '96. Though I think you could still special order the Heritage for a while afterward. In any case what makes this Star exceptional is the low rumbling bass of the engine. Not sure how much of it comes through on the other end but in person this truck easily had my favorite engine note of anything we filmed in New York. There isn't much of an in your face roar like Allgone Removal's Autocar, rather a deep, low rumble you felt right in the gooch. Like a constantly thumping subwoofer. Very satisfying. And probably less fatiguing / irritating by the time the end of the shift rolls around.
Thanks to the driver for being so cool with us filming. Also to Scott / Trashman242 for making the trip twice as fun as it would be otherwise. You can see this truck posted on his channel, titled “NYC Demolition Waste Trucks”. Filmed June 22nd and 23rd, 2015.

George... You NEVER fail to impress me! These Leach 2rll's are something else, they defiantly pack a load! I gotta say when Milwaukee got the new 2rlll's, I I was really excited to see them, I didn't realize how many Leach 2rlls would be taken off their routes, Even though I really never saw the 2rll's pack stuff like this, It was great to see them pack a load. This chassis goes extremely well with the body, it also sounds amazing, this crew was awesome as well! Amazing video!

+wmautoreach123 I definitely try. :) Nothing really compares to the 2R-II. There were 2R-IIIs around too, but sure enough a brand new T880 we spotted had not the smooth sided body but instead the gold old straight side 2R-II box on the back. I suppose the new curve shell is either more difficult to reinforce for the demolition application, or the old straight sided body is easier to rebuild as these trucks so often need. In any case they're the same packer, much love for both versions.

Thank you for that video. That leach 2R-ll compactor seems pretty powerful. More powerful than what we have here in the netherlands.

well done. favorite parts were when the wood contorts (3:16, 4:01) while being murdered by the packer. 3:31 getting to see some previous compactage was awesome, benefits of that angle. can't help but think that 4:30 was directed at me, with that tripod carrier walking away dejectedly as our boy Jim goes "ya know he could've hung on the door." nonetheless it brought a (bleak) smile too

We used to always try to take a truck with an over head winch we doing large item clean ups. you could put almost anything in a Leach with that set up.

+John Sidwell Don't get me wrong the 400 is great too, but if the job came down to hand loading a bunch of bulky items I'd take the Leach over the Loadmaster every time. The Loadmaster seems to do better with the A-frame cans though.

Not sure what else to say that hasn't already been mentioned. Just another remarkable production from you that we've all grown to expect. Bit more of a slower paced video but the top-notch editing sure helped. Haha can't tell you how much I loved the fact you included the bit about Scott, sorry, your partner, not hanging on the door.

That’s definitely a Cummins engine in this western star garbage truck and a 10 speed manual transmission

Damn, that Western Star looks pretty badass. Unfortunately the sound of it didn't come through real well for me :( These Western Stars aren't common at all, so it's pretty cool that you were able to video one in NYC. Shows how versatile and powerful the Leach 2rII is, and I think it will be my choice rear loaded when I start a refuse company. Still can't wait for the videos of the Loadmasters!

Can't go wrong with lots of wood being fed to the jaws of a beast of a rear loader! No matter how big the wooden object, the result will be crunching, tearing and then nothing haha I could hear the crate begging for mercy just before the blade pushed down and brought hell with it at 1:40 :D That pallet at 3:20 was no fun after watching the massive crate get mutilated; it's like a little goldfish getting eating by a great white shark lol I love those big rectangular crates like 6:40, even any other items which fit perfectly in the hopper. I sort of hate it when the whole thing doesn't get under the blade and the outer side escapes injury (until the next cycle), but at the same time I like to see half get chopped away and the remainder helplessly awaiting destiny. Indeed quite a different engine note to the other hardcore rumbler in your other video... I guess this one was a bit more of a mellow version eh? Cool to see a Western Star too. The winch is for more than lifting bins! I remember it coming in handy a couple of times on clean-up, one occasion involving an old and heavy piano. Job well done again George!

+MitchellM15 That's the thing loved so much about this truck. The engine didn't really sound mellower, just a couple dozen octaves lower than your average diesel, to the point where you felt the engine more than you heard it. Think subwoofer. Obvi the mic couldn't quite capture it. Thanks Mitch. :)

I never was a big fan of the Loadmaster especially the single handle old school ones. I worked on a double handle version of the old packer and it packed 12-13 tons on a 20 yarder which was insane. I later worked on their recent high compaction body and found it fell short of the previous body's abilities. Nothing packs like a Leach although reliability wise I prefer a McNeilus rear loader due to how efficient and quickly it handles waste. It packs out faster but I can run 3 loads faster than 2 on a Leach.

The recent high compaction Excel you're talking about is in another league. Better compared with a Formula 5000 as a mid-to-high compaction machine. For anything less than demolition waste the 400 really is overkill, all about matching the machine to the job. Which I think the Excel *ahem* excels at for the majority of rear load duties.

George, this truck is just unbelievable! Love that deep rumble during the incab shot! What engine is in this rig, Cummins L10? 8LL transmission, right? Why wasn't he gunning it? I was hoping to hear this truck being shifted at high RPM's!
