WUKO Hooklift Truck: Eko-Trans in Krakow

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Eko-Trans keeps their hooklift busy shuffling containers around the Kraków metro area. The first job is servicing a permanent account at a facility which tests concrete samples. These boxes are routinely heavy and make for entertaining lifting and dumping. Next take a ride in the cab through Kraków's “aleje”, with some satisfying engine notes and a squeeky clutch for your listening pleasure, to a 6-way switch at a construction site. Be sure to turn on closed captioning for an explanation of the controls. The Renault Manager chassis should look familiar to the North American viewer by way of the lighter duty Mack badged version sold stateside as the Mid-Liner throughout the 80s and 90s.
Mounted to the back of the 1989 Renault Manager is a WUKO hooklift unit. Founded in 1955, WUKO is a staple of the Polish waste industry, long producing a variety of equipment not limited to garbage trucks but encompassing all aspects of municipal machinery. The firm was privatized in the late 90s and continues to churn out equipment to this day. Their hooklift units are well regarded, and stand out as being cheap to buy and repair. Otherwise there isn't anything particularly unique about the WUKO build as far as I know, just the standard sliding jib setup. The up close shots in the second half of the video should give some insight to the basic structure and operation of the various frames, sub frames, etc. to those unfamiliar with the hooklift concept.
The KP standard bins are by far the most common large (relatively speaking) waste containers in Poland. Ditto for the truck, these 2 axle hooklifts are Poland's answer to the de facto standard North American 22 foot roll off hoist and matching dumpsters. With a footprint measuring roughly 12 feet by 6 feet, these KP containers lend themselves to Europe's characteristically tighter quarters and smaller waste volumes. Height of the sides varies with total container volume; 7m (KP-7) and 10m (KP-10) sizes are most common.
When it comes to actually moving and dumping the container, the KP standard gives you options. For hooklift service there's a loop on the front, rails on the bottom, and ground rollers at the rear. Lifting lugs on the sides allow for service by skip lifts / load luggers. Additionally an appropriately equipped rear loader can service KP containers in the British “Skip Eater” tradition. The containers compatible with rear loaders will have a top hinged tailgate as opposed to barn doors. A common configuration in an apartment setting is a KP-10 with a rigid cover w/ small lidded openings for residential waste, periodically serviced by a packer truck.
The KP standard affords the Polish hauler incredible versatility. Eko-Trans was able to trial a skip lift type truck for their operation with minimal risk. (Dissatisfied with the switch, the truck now sits idle in the yard.) Similarly another hauler soon to be featured on the channel successfully made the switch from hooklift to skip lift with zero modifications to the existing 40 unit strong container fleet. Hooklifts and skip lifts each have their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to placing containers, a company could conceivably run both types of trucks and dispatch them appropriately.
Thanks to everyone at Eko-Trans and both drivers. Filmed September 2nd and 7th, 2015

    These videos of how waste companies work over there are so great. You show all of us a whole other world of trucks/bodies and collection methods. It may be rougher and more rudimentary than it is in the States but it gets the job done which is what its all about. I could definitely see you working over there with one of these companies George. Thanks again for your awesome work.

    Nicely captured, in the UK these little beasts were known also as a Midliner with Renaults Bigger truck version being the Turboliner. The Midliner is as rare as gold dust in the UK, haven't seen one in years but there is I believe a Turboliner still earning its keep.

    +Dave Howe Thanks Dave. Seems the UK isn't to keen on keeping it's equipment around for very long. Anything over 5 years seems to be labeled "old." Is that an accurate assessment?

    +georgewuzheer hmm it's not too bad an assessment. It depends on who you work for really, that and these stupid EU emissions rules ( I think we're up to Euro 6) most councils maintain a modern fleet probably no older than 2010, where as a haulage firm might run the truck for 10years especially if they've brought the truck and not leased it. As I say, it depends on the company. All in all there's still a few old trucks on the Uks roads but they're usually ERF, the one I used to drive 4yrs ago was on a W plate which I think was 99/2000

    +wmautoreach123 Thanks! I try. They do haul a lot, legal gross for these 2 axle trucks is 18 tonnes. The front axles on these things go airborne all the time with the heavier containers full of "gruz", or rubble. The crazy thing is this truck's replacement is in the process of being put together in Eko-Trans' shop, that thing has a couple feet of overhang behind the rear axle. That thing will really be a wheelie popping monster.

    How exciting to see you post a hook-lift! I'm thinking your first hook upload unless I've forgotten another video? Love the clear presence of weight in that first container, especially when it actually slams down and jolts the whole truck, particularly the cab. That was nothing but, because you see the following clip with the truck lifted off the front axle haha That's when you know it's heavy duty work! :D The unloading process was a lot rougher than I anticipated... was expecting a smooth roll forward and steady discharge lol You can hear all those concrete blocks scraping the surfaces of the container on the way out... I could actually describe the sound more as heavy than rough too! I noticed at 2:01 the frame folded up, kind of appeared that hard brake just beforehand was the cause. I also appreciate that pick-up from 5:30 coming off the uneven ground at a less than straight angle, also only took him a minor manoeuvre to get the container sitting properly between the rollers. Nice sound to the engine, had a nice low rumbling note to compliment the smaller and older truck it is. The controls on that truck are a whole lot simpler than the functions we've got... main frame, sliding jib, articulating jib, container locks, hook lock, pump and there are some other things I can't identify.

  • @georgewuzheer

    @georgewuzheer

    8 жыл бұрын

    +MitchellM15 Was exciting to film too, it is indeed my first. You want to talk about weight? Apparently the last time this stop was serviced it ripped the hook off of the boom! No doubt overloading the hoist for two and a half decades eventually took it's toll. That's why the hook has that bit of red around the base, evidence of the repair. I would've thought the loop on the container would've been first to go but apparently not. I would say the hoist folded as a result of being dumped with the sliding jib partially retracted. There wasn't a separate dumping switch, so the dump frame and lifting jib must lock together at some point (presumably mechanically) for the dump function to work. Logically that would be when the telescope is extended. Łukasz was the driver in the second half of the video. He's the regular hooklift driver and a total pro. At angle pick ups are a huge advantage of the hooklift hoist, the truck doesn't really have to be lined up with the container until just before the rear rollers make contact with the container rails, and in this case even a little after, although that must put some crazy stress on that single rear roller. Might not have worked so well with the first container full of concrete. This truck had the automatic/passive container locks. I recognize all the other controls except for hook lock. Is that for an adjustable height hook?

  • @AussieGarbo

    @AussieGarbo

    8 жыл бұрын

    +georgewuzheer Damn it ripped the hook off! haha Definitely a bit of wear and tear, but if it's the first time in over two decades, it put a solid effort into holding up. It's funny you mention the hook loop on the containers, because it's not exactly the thickest and most reinforced part, so you'd think those would break away more often than not with all the stress exerted on them... DURABILITY! At 3:20 I noticed the rearward pointing hooks on each side of the frame, these catch a part under the container when the jib slides forward right? It reminds me entirely of the container locks on the dino (auto/passive locks you mentioned?), only in the case of this hook-lift, it appears engaging these locks with the container maybe secures the lift and dumping frames together. Just when you said the jib wasn't completely extended, it makes me think things weren't hooked like they were supposed to be, allowing the frames to fall apart during the dumping lift. I've never studied ours in detail to see exactly what happens, but generally when the container is pulled right forward and sitting flat on the truck, once you engage the container locks at the rear, the frames also lock together in a linked operation. I'm annoyed I haven't climbed on a hook-lift and gazed at all the engineering :/ That "hook lock" almost closes up the hook on the truck, so once you engage the container the loop can't pop out at any point. I've got a couple of trucks on Flickr where you can just notice it sticking out the top of the jib - one's an old Visy ACCO and the other a newer JJR ACCO.

  • @georgewuzheer

    @georgewuzheer

    +MitchellM15 Yeah those pointy things catch the container and serve as the rear hold down. That's an interesting thought, I really don't know the exact mechanism but it very well could just rely on the container structure to lock things together. Sounds like your hooklifts are a bit more advanced between the container locks, hook lock, etc. Now I want to see a bin pop out of the hook just to know what it looks like. :P I'll get right on Flickr and check those out.

    Lol at 1:03! really funny to see that happen. Great footage! Always love the Midliner (or in this case, the Manager) design. Classic feel to it especially with that rear window behind the door. How long will you be in Europe for? Hopefully you can get some footage of an ASL on Wheelies or RL dumpsters. So cool that you can just make friends with the drivers and get a ride in the truck wherever you go.

To jest bardzo niebezpieczne. Tu na szczęście kontener oparł się o kostkę. Zwracajcie na to uwagę - kiprując zawsze wysuń najpierw kontener do tyłu, a dopiero potem go podnoś do góry do wysypania / kiprowania.

    Haha what a fun truck. Shocked at how well these trucks are holding up considering the amount of weight they're carrying. Truly, truly am shocked as to how much power is in the hook. Have you seen that funny vid of a hooklift where there's like 20 people on the truck to try and even out the front? Reminded me of this lol The Renault cab was sweet to see. Really like that cab after seeing them quite a bit around SoCal (both in the refuse industry and on box trucks). Curious, you fluent in polish? That's really cool how you're able to communicate with the drivers in another country. Awesome vid!

She's well maintained and in great shape. I have seen that vid, it's been shared on the georgewuzheer Facebook page. Eko-Trans' entire fleet consists of these Renaults so you'll certainly get your fill in the coming weeks. I am fluent. Technically Polish is my first language, but my English is much better now. Communication was no problem, certainly easier than parts of SoCal lol. Glad you liked the vid.
