In real life, those destroyer leaders were really good, hence fearful for the potential enemies. Le terrible means fearful. In French, the word terrible is used in its original meaning, induce terror, not used in the sarcastic meaning in English. Looks like the torps are really good. 1.4 km of invisi torp concealment range is not a luxury but should be enough to be used extensively. The Kamikaze DD which is considered one of the most OP DD only has 1.6 km of invisi torp concealment range.

Expecting your friendly DD to spot? That was a clear mistake :p I'd say save the reload booster until it's clear that the friendly DD will NOT hide in smoke. If he so much as even pops smoke, then wait with the reload booster.

That's because the guy ranting is a potato. Look him up on the EU server stats. Potatoes don't think they ever do anything wrong, yet he did everything you could possibly do wrong as a BB with a KNOWN DESTROYER WITHIN 8KM OF YOU. They KNEW Flamu was there lurking north of the cap, poking around the islands, they shot at him several times! But this dumb shit swings his guns away to shoot at a long distance target despite a DD lurking in knife fighting range. Next he falls for every single DD trick to get you to line yourself up for a fat torpedo salvo. Any other DD could drop torps, smoke up and disengage or whatever, but this thing can't.

WG: so French cruisers have high damage low impact, let's make French destroyers low damage low impact

If the French DDs are like the Aigle, they will be a good line. If they are like the Terrible, they are going to suck. Main battery reload booster is not worth it, and losing smoke is horrible.

Aigle is really good. 19100hp at tier 6 with SE makes it top dog in health against anything but VERY beefy T8 DDs. If you use the speed, high arcs (behind the island firing is completely viable), and adapt your tactics to whatever you have in front (mix between american and russian DD styles, depending on the situation), it's a splendid T6 DD. Unorthodox, yes, but splendid. then again Aigle is T6. AND has smoke, not a retarded useless reload gimmick in a platform that's nowhere close to having any advantage whatsoever other than speed, like the several Aigle enjoys at T6 (Aigle is not only the fastest ship in it's tier bracket, except for Minsk/leningrad, it also has the highest Heathpool in T6 and T7, and comparable to beefy T8s. Aigle's torps are very good for T6 too)

Honestly, Le Terrible had the potential to be a good ship, but I think that the gun reload booster is a bad consumable because it always seems to be an excuse for the devs to weaken the rate of fire of any (French) ship that mounts it. I'd much rather that the Terrible had had a better overall RoF. If the Terrible had been more like the Aigle, in terms of its consumables, IMO, it'd have been a better ship all around. Or for that matter, if the ship had a better overall RoF and replaced the reload booster with a heal, it'd be a better ship. Or maybe Smoke that was only good enough for escapes, like the RN smoke. However, it seems like the devs did just about everything to make this ship as bad as possible. And the shame is that, in spite of how bad it is, it is fun to play. It would have just been more fun if the ship was just a little better.

The gun RoF of Le Terrible matches her historic counterpart. So I don't think the reload boost is an excuse for a nerfed RoF, so much as a boost intended to give it a way to deal with the tougher gunboat DDs at T8 and up.

First it was out DPMed by IJN DDs, then they "buffed" the guns, but wanted to keep the MBRB, so they removed the smoke. Maybe next time they should, I don't know, *stop with the damn gimmicks* . I was sold on the mere potential this ship had, but yeah, after all the she went through, I'm not even bothering to look at it, let alone buy it.

hey man, not sure if you've tried this build, and i dont have the ship, so take this with a grain of salt; but it seems to me that a ship like this is best used on the flanks. specifically against those usual Japanese destroyers that tend to avoid the caps and flank around to torp. I'd recommend RPF on this build so you can for example, park just behind an island on the flanking edge of a cap, use your arcs to your advantage and watch the rpf for a flanking dd, when you see him coming around, hit your speed boost and charge him, he'll most likely turn away and pop smoke, but your speed will easily catch him, and since he'll most likely be alone on that flank while everyone else is staring at the cap, he'll be an easy kill. then just take stock of the battlefield and figure out your next move, maybe continue flanking around and stealth torp the bb's broadsides, or just hang tight and use your arcs again. save those reload boosters for up close fights and surprises or guaranteed duels with dd's. thing is, your speed is your most powerful weapon here, getting on their back line can easily pull several ships off of defending/attacking a cap, leaving your team to move in. dont think of this ship like a normal hold your own ship, think of it as a support ship, one that disrupts the nme's plans and position, getting a bb to turn to dodge your torps can get him killed, getting a radar cruiser to move out to chase you can both get him killed, and open the cap for your side. maybe that will get you better results overall. just a thought, again, take it with a grain of salt, i'm just an armchair admiral with a bit of experience in the game and how people tend to react. good hunting.

Now, the Le terrible isn't that bad, but this brings up a question. We have the Le terrible but what will the le fantasque class play like. Will it play the same way as the terrible, no smoke semi good torps artillery that can fire quick or will it play differently. That then brings up the next question, how would the bigger sister of this class play, the mogador. Would it be a Khabarovsk with better torpedoes as it had a 4x2 gun layout?

Flamu what would your opinion be if it had an infinite reload booster, like the atlanta has for AA? so with cooldown obviously, but infinite uses.

Poor Flamu. He suffered so others like us did not need to.

My build centers on MBM2. You buff the turret Traverse. CO Skill: If you have Honore , use him PT EM, LS SE, SUPT RPF, CE You have 180 degrees in about 12.4 seconds with a reload 5.4 sec. That makes it comfortable even in DD knife fighting situation. You go "run and gun". Your rpf allows you to get the jump on the closest ship. Spot a ship fire, turn on RBM the disengage on cool down. Decide whether to go back or find another target. I normally try first time capping if there is cover, otherwise I try to go wide on a flank and chip away. Caps you can get back. Dead ships otoh..*shrug* Use and abuse of speed allows you to determine when and where you want to strike. I think of it in terms of a fighter plan. Take one pass and decided to re engage or not.

Got this in a box and have to say, it's my fav bote by far.I run double rudder shift and very rarely get hit before vanishing behind an island. It's a bit like the old T-50/2 - always full yolo. Works best at 3:00 AM after a couple of beers.

they can also give it longer time on the reload booster, but maybe less bonus...like 25% or a bit more. they can also improve gun angles and traverse, concealment, maybe faster base reload. it cant really rely on speed for defense as it cant stay far and hit targets easily like RU DDs. its like a BAD RU DD

@@urbaaniaetsintaa285 Nah, what Shima needs is just a buff to the torp detection range. With it being outgunned badly by every other Tier 10 DD and having such long torpedo reload, it's no good for those torps to also be so easy to dodge.

Dear Flamu do you might consider re-reviewing the HSF Harekaze after the buff of the 100mm guns? I revisted her recently aswell and iam very surprised how much fun and good it is

Nice review, Flambass. You give it the benefit of the doubt, but ultimately all the KZread reviewers are coming down on this ship. Sitting at $43.14 in the Premium Shop, it is a bit too much for a novelty ship. (No discounts, despite all the Black Madness going on currently.) Personally might consider it if the price comes down. I like playing destroyers but am kind of crap at high-tier knife fights. On the NA Server it seems like a Tier VII or VIII will be low tier on about three games out of four. If the price comes down, I might give it a try focusing on spotting and capping. Wargaming is trying to add some unique characteristics while maintaining the mystical concept of "balance." Seems like a buff or two is in order.

Despite the initial fears that were sowed by CCs, I am loving Le Terrible, she's a really fun ship to play. I had a lot of success chasing down DDs, or just going out into a flank to be a pain in the butt. Her role is like Khab, being a pain in the ass. Also when compared to other DDs Le Terrible is just simply way more fun when it goes to gunning out in the open, since you are REALLY fast and it is sometimes funny how fast you can move from one side of the map to the other.

I have the same experience, I really love the ship, it might not be the best ship in the game but wow, I'm finding it so hilarious to run and gun. Playing tier X games and getting top of the team just feels so much better when you know you really earned it instead of heaving a 'superior' ship.

"If you have raw firepower, it's much easier to put raw firepower to use, all you need to do is shoot and you're being effective. If you've got massive torpedo power, it's very easy to put that to use, you torp everything. If you've got great concealment, it's also easy to put that to use you cap and you scout and all of this... But putting speed as your only strength, trying to be effective with it, is not an easy task." That's like the best summation of playing the French lines on a whole. Sure, you're riding in a ships that's more citadel than hull filled with cockeyed Spaceballs gunners with a turn radius measured in parsecs and too few torpedoes that can't reach out to the limits of your chubby concealment rating, but BY GOD DO YOU EVER GO FAST!!!! Of course, on the flip side there's a lot of things the French ships do decently. They tend to have good range and decent shell velocities and good fire chance and decent HE damage and good AP damage and penetration and torps with ok speed range and damage and decent rudder shift is typically decent and they usually have ok-to-average secondaries and AA and... well, the turret traverse was pretty good on everything until the DLs came out... But the big hole everything French hits is that it's super BALANCED, in that for everything good there has to be some mitigating downside, and vice versa. There's rarely any overweening strength that tells you "this ship is made for X purpose" or defining weakness that tells you "never use this ship for/against X conditions". That creates kind of a frustrating feeling of half-measures in a lot of cases. You have snipe and kite range but not really have the shell velocities or tight dispersions to go with it. At ranges where those shells and torps do hit super hard you don't really have the DPM, turn rates, or armor to brawl, or the stealth to play a sneaky ambusher. You have some cool consumables, but they don't give you the map control that buffed hydro or a surface radar or long duration smoke generator will. So you miss out on being the stealth ambusher, the cap contender, the punishing sniper, the raw DPM area denial ship, the jack-of-trades toolbox of support, or the map control scout. But you can do all those things better than some other ship or two in your tier too. And in fact there's always some clever way you can win about any match-up, mano-a-mano, if you play it right. But in the ensemble casting of a group battle, it's hard to know what role to go for. Very few of the French ships, besides maybe Lyon and Alsace, have that kind of clarity for being really good in one position. And that's sort of the biggest thing I disagree with in the analysis. I don't think Le Terrible is a ship with just one or two niches, I think it's sort of a good ship but with no clear niche, no clear place in the meta or the food chain of the game currently. And as such it hangs on a knife-edge a small nerf away from uselessness and a couple small buffs away from doing too many things well and becoming OP *cough*secondJapaneseDDtree*cough*. In a way Le Terrible reminds me of Henri IV. And as you said with that ship, it's not bad, but it feels hard to be influential or feel like you're contributing to the team. The "Win condition" for the ship is doing as much damage as possible, dropping shells on everything, hitting torps where you can, lighting fires and forcing damage control and kiting to evade damage, while hoping the rest of your team can keep targets spotted and capitalize on your damage and not fall apart at the seams around you. And that can be very frustrating, because it's hard to carry matches when you can't bail your team out in a clear and specific way, even with a ship whose on paper values mark it as being very good. With all that said, I really like Le Terrible, but I also like playing Henri IV. What both ships contribute is really constant pressure, constantly setting fires, shifting targets, threatening with torpedoes, dropping AP citadels if you catch an enemy napping, running when you have too many guns pointing your way, coming right back to threaten somewhere else. But while they put pressure on the enemy, they also keep the captain under pressure to always be moving, scanning, shooting, dodging, always busy, and no, neither ship is one that allows you the luxury of being comfortable.

Pay2lose....when they removed the smoke I noped the hell out.

Good on ya man, I hate the Khaba and it at least gives you a choice of smoke OR heal.

I already told WG on their fb page I wasn't going to buy this turd.Tier for tier the Aigle is a much better French dd.I'm also not going to buy the Vanguard unless they lower the citadel and give it the Brit superheal.Keep up the good content.

I would buff the default DPM to make it decent without the reload booster. And make the reload booster an actual scary thing, but alongside they should add a smoke screen in the same slot as the reload booster. That would be an interesting pick. Either scary temporal DPM or smoke

I'd still take the brief DPM. I outshot a Baltimore with the booster, and I got a 5 citadel kill on a Neptune with it. Smoke would be nice but to swoop in, rip away half of someones HP before zipping away laughing like a maniac is tops.

Is it like Aigle mk2 at tier 8 with reload boost, no smoke?

jsm666 I agree. This is why it's probably not a good idea to depend on someone who is very near you when to decide to smoke up to spot for you. Better to smoke up when there are other ships doing the spotting that aren't anywhere near you. The worst though is the jerk who will push you out of your own smoke.

Wargaming releases premiums like this once in a while, to prove to the community that Premiums aren't always god tier I guess. (A lot of them are equivalent to tech tree ..which is GOOD, some of them are flat out better...and then you have these)

Always thought the Tier 8 American BBs were a good way of doing premiums, each one is a little different. Alabama is more agile but a little less accurate than the North Carolina (1.9 sigma vs 2.0 with more vertical dispersion than the NorCal) and the Massachusetts is an entirely different playstyle, worse accuracy out of all of them but amazing secondaries.

Derpitz is more vulnerable to long range torps than her sister, Richelieu's a bigger Dunk, Musashi's a handicapped Yammy, and Gascogne's more of a side-grade than anything. I think they're simply meant to be different rather than better.

WG rarely releases OP premiums for WoWS. They sometimes happen like Nelson and Gremyaschy, but rarely. Some are bad, most are okay, and there are a few good non-OP ones.

Oh you think this one is bad mate? Wait for the Eitel....it will be for free missions like Graf Spee but still. Flame was mad at Graf Spee , the Eitel will be even more shit. Bad AP, pen values, bad dispersion, bad armor (cruiser armor on a Kongo long hull? Citadels from every side from 380mm. It’s a German Nelson) bad secondaries. It has good AA, it had good concealment but it will be nerfed .... so? Nelson have this insane heal , has good 406mm guns with good accuracy and insane British HE. This German BB has all bad things from German BBs getting nothing good from them....lol LeTerrible is potent, Ashitaka is more potent cause it’s accurate and good pen. If LeTerrible is shit so Eitel is trash, complete garbage .

I've had the Le Terrible for a while now, and I have to say that it's actually a pretty fun DD to play. It may not (and isn't) the perfect DD, but it's just not that bad. For one thing, it has 3 racks of torps (in a layout similar to the Mahan, i.e. one port, one starboard, and one centerline), which means that the Le Terrible actually does have a decent alpha strike ability. Secondly, the gun booster allows you to completely wreck enemy DDs in short-ish range gun duels (where you're more accurate). It would be nice if the normal gun reload was quicker, but they're large-ish (for a DD) guns, so the relatively slow reload is understandable. In a sense, the Le Terrible is sort of like the Khab, in that she's a really annoying ankle biter. However, she's not the best long range sniper because of her floaty shells. It's probably unsuitable for competitive play, but in randoms, you can actually be really damned annoying. And if you're able to make use of your torpedoes, you can actually do surprising amounts of damage.

to be fair, Kiev doesn't need smoke and gets away with bad concealment and good speed. In fact Kiev play style, you don't want smoke cos you never stop

Not on standard soviet DD gunplay. But if you're the only one, or one of two, DD in your team you're going to have to cap, or at least contest caps. Have fun with 8km concealment (if you're using CE on Kiev you're doing it wrong) and trying to contest caps without having smoke to pull your ass out of trouble when the inevitable wall of crap begins falling on your ship. And higher tier soviet gunships have heal OR smoke. Not to mention those laser guns able to hit square on maneouvering DDs out from 14km without a hitch. This thing gets none of that. Get's the speed, get's the shaft in everything else. It's utter shit.

@Thinking Mantis Well is useful for both. Though it's best used to break off undesirable engagements (and in the Kiev, it's it's main use), there's nothing wrong in popping smoke when the situation arises and fire away ;) ;).

I've found that playing this like the Russian DD, Kiev or Ognevoi, is the best way to play it. However the big difference is that it tends to lean towards AP than HE. I generally save the reload booster for laying some heavy hitting AP volleys into opportunity targets.

I got the ship and I have to say I love it. I don't know what it is... it's just a fun challenge to play in randoms, similar to Dunkerque. With Tier 8 competitive very rare these days, I don't mind it for a relaxing change of pace.

I'm not giving out Flamu, but in my experience "no real way of disengaging" is incorrect. If I want to disengage in my Le Terrible... It may take a few moments, maybe less. It all depends on what's behind me, but she can do it. Because 52+knots cannot be matched by even Russian DD's. I agree with you, she is not going to regularly be the top ship on damage done, but It's not difficult (in my experience), to get high on the team in xp through spotting dmg, capping, and general damage between torpedoes, and firing the guns when I am spotted anyway, or am safe from incoming fire. Her speed may seem like a gimmick, but I've been able to put it to great use. Trigger discipline is definitely a key skill to any french DD skipper.

I actually really like my Terrible French DD. I have it set up just like my Khaba and play it almost the same way, near max range engagement and use speed to stay alive. With the gun reload module running I can very easily outgun ANY other DD in the game, including T10 DDs. So yeah, this isn't so "terrible" after all!

Insane fun ship to play! Playing it since release nonstop. got 5 Kraken games and 3 games with 4 kills so far and sunk 5 enemy CVs in the early game. Running a 15 skill cpt right now. and the +50% Speed module. If this ship has flaws you can fix them with points. Yes you need at least 10 cpt point i would say. but thats ok.

I'm not afraid to learn how to use her. Although I think she should be tier 7. Also a bit pricey.

Dont think you can use your misplay as a reason against reload boosters, I have never popped my reload booster for a ship that hasn't been spotted yet. Would be like popping DFAA when you cant see any planes.

Replying to my own comment because I'm drunk, stupid and otherwise mental...great video as usual though. Sometimes I play good games and think that if I wasn't drunk and working 24/7 I'd be as good as Flamu...other times I ram islands and realise Notser is actually pretty good. Edit: I honestly thought this was a cruiser for about 5 minutes, not because I'm drunk, stupid or mental but because IT'S HUGE, but not in a Soviet sort of way. Another edit: I kinda like how WoWs premiums aren't all OP though, this one with a moderate dpm boost could be pretty interesting. Keep it crap generally so it's not p2w but p2variation (if that's even a thing...it is since Smith definitely, epic ship.

pisses me off that DDs pop smoke when I have a good target in sight with low risk because they don't know how to use their boat. Happens way too much.

This thing is an utter piece of frustration on water... it's name says it all...

Its French, they don't dig in and fight. They are designed to breifly sling rounds run away very quickly. So what do you expect, be glad it doesn't come standard with a special white flag that mounts on the stern rather than the main mast and gives it special camo properties in retreat.

You hate it and I love it. It's all about preferences and the way you play.

I remember reading about these cool french giant mega destroyers, how cool they'll be, wont be as sneaky but lots of health and lots of guns, true dd hunters just like the german dds work; shame wg wasn't excited

Still too slow. Some boats in War Thunder reach over 130 km/h (72 knots). BTW, Flamu, War Thunder Naval battles is out, are you going to cover it?

@@seanchen7391 It can have both meanings in French. "Terrible" significates it causes fear. So it can be positive meaning the ship inspire fear to the enemy. But "Terrible" can also means it is horrible. Like something howfull happening to u.

Hmm, I've been fooling around with the AP rounds a little. Technically the AP rounds are suppose to have a 1000 velocity.

Looks like a unique, fun playstyle that isn't at the bleeding edge of competitive ships. Sign me up.

*sigh* ... the French DDs are the ships that I've been looking the most forward to since launch.... I guess I'll just have to wait for the Fantasque

The sad part is the La Fantasque class doesn't seem that bad on paper - 5x 138mm (5.4in) guns, decent torpedoes in 3x3 tubes and ridiculous 45 knots. It felt like WG tried too hard to sell its one gimmick (speed) and forgot about everything else. How sad its verdict is already plastered all over on its own name.

I think they need to at least remove the cap on the reload consumable. It'd feel like a carrier getting deplaned once you're out of stacks...

It's amazing that WG made a Premium that's worse than the Krispy Kreme. FFS, this thing can't torp boat, can't cap, can't gunboat. The only reason this exists is to pad the stats of her enemies.

Just give it a 3sec base reload and it wil be fine without smoke and heal. MBRB on top so you have that "short time high dps" with 1.5sec reload.

I well remember the first time I saw a Le Terrible in battle, me in a Kitakaze. 45 seconds later (I had some help) was the first time I saw a Le Terrible sink.

Kinda historically. The French and the Italian Navy in the years between the wars developed their interest in speed further into a fetish, especilally in destroyers and light cruisers. So in buying "La Terrible" you get the correct french spirit. Od course, if WG would implement the same historically correct feeling to soviet destroyers, the customers would be supposed to buy ships that never leave the harbour and if they did, they immerdiatelly would stop because of maintenance issues. In addition your captain would get automatically shot by a political comissar when reaching more than 3 points.

Being devils advocate - if you can do 170k damage in a ship it shows it is capable of stuff. It has a high skill cap so gives highly skilled players something to challenge themselves with (not me!) it's also quite nice that wg have put a niche ship like this in the game rather than something op etc....

Wasn't 'Le Terrible' IRL built to be a destroyer killer?

This seems accurate, given the terrible state of French destroyers in the WW2 timeframe. All designed to look good on paper, but in actual practice they were terrible ships.

Well, at least they gave this DD an appropriate name. Wargaming should release another premium version of this ship called Le Merde.

Le Terrible was buffed with the released of the french DD line. Now it is one of the best DDs at tier VIII and is downright OP when there is no CV.

I think giving it a heal would help it a lot.

They need to give it heal, get rid of the godawful idea that is main battery reload booster, and adjust its rate of fire accordingly. Then, it could very well become a decent long range gunboat. Giving us a premium that plays similarly to Tashkent and Khaba would not be a bad idea. It just trades some of its gunpower for even more speed.

honestly if it wasn't for the massive HP difference I would say the kagero has a chance against this... the reload is worse, but the better angles, especially as it runs away... if I saw a terrible at around 8k I would probably pick a fight.

Why didn't they just make it like the Aigle... Give it average reload (4-5 seconds) and switch out main battery reload booster for smoke. Now you have a great, fun, fast ship. Unfortunatly, WG won't do this, even if it boosts their sales
