LCS Independence - the ship from the future

Ғылым және технология

The Independece is a littoral combat ship class developed by General Dynamics and Austal for the United States Navy.
The design of the large trimaran makes this ship very unusual, greatly expands its capabilities, capacity and speed. Coupled with a wide scale of weapons, artillery and missiles, the ship is capable of fully performing the tasks of protecting littoral zones and fighting small enemy ships.
Initially, within the framework of the US NAVY tender, companies produced 2 ships of this class. After adopting them and confirming their prospects, the fleet ordered an additional batch of ships, of which, by 2020, 11 units are already in service.

@@SidRay1760 They are the most powerful because they do not have to worry about invasion by another major power due to the isolation of North America. They also bullied many smaller countries into being their puppet states. Its hard to find a country in central America and the Caribbean that the United States have not bullied into doing what they want. In the modern world they bully middle Eastern countries because they have oil. Youd also think being the richest country in the world that live is the best there but its not. People in Northern and western Europe have a better quality of life because their governments spend more on them that the US does on its citizens. And no I wouldnt be president because I'm not American. You have to be born in the USA to be president. Becoming president of the US is about being a good liar and making people believe you want to help them. It's all about fooling people and bullying smaller countries. For instance. The war in Iraq was purely for the US military suppliers to make money.

Back when Lockheed Martin developed the F117, they also got a request for stealth submarine design from the navy. They developed one that on computer simulations was essentially invisible to sonar, and sent it to the Navy where it was rejected for not looking enough like a traditional submarine. Skunkworks then stopped taking requests from the navy because their entrenchment in tradition held them back from innovation. (This is from a book called Skunkworks, which is definitely worth the read)

With the approval of the Constellation Class frigates, and the continuing problems with LCS, it doubtful that this ship will remain a ship from the future. The Navy needs to go back to a land based testing system as they have done in the past. Its designed to uncover problems and defects before ships are built. The system isn't fool proof, but its better than building and launching ships and finding out afterwards what doesn't work.

As a concept - the modular approach is attractive but they haven't got it to work as intended. I suspect this is mostly due to the module designers but the LCS gets the blame. The Independence class with NSM's, Hellfires and 30mm turrets are useable but I think where its value lies is in the big mission bay, the shallow draft and the large helicopter deck. I'm glad the USN is getting the new frigates but I think that they should have skipped the Freedom class and had installed a few MK41 VLS on the Independence class. I wonder if Austal can make them cheaply enough now should the Navy decide to replace the Freedom class hulls with new-build LCS ships.

The US navy classifies the operating zones of it's ships as blue water (open ocean), green water ( coastal and shallow waters) and brown water ( rivers etc). The development of the LCS class of ships was a designed to operate primarily in green water zones. Of course the LCS vessel can operate together with larger ships when required so they are not limited to just green water operations. There are many publications about the the initial design competition and the subsequent decision to build both designs. The Independence class LCS offers a number of advantages over monohull displacement vessels. Within the context of the mission goals, the internal space of the Independence class LCS allows significant flexibility for transport of supplies, vehicles and specialized mission modules. As described in this video the very large flight platform means that a very wide range of rotary aircraft can be accommodated. Having two hangers enables different types of helicopters or drones to hosted simultaneously. The initial design of the independence class LCS was judged as being too lightly armed. Hence a significant upgrade was carried out that includes as shown in the video the addition of short and long range missiles. The operating cost of any vessel will generally exceed the purchase cost depending on the length time it remains in service the size of crew complement and this like fuel costs etc. The trimaran design seen here facilitates lower fuel costs, higher speeds and consequently much shorter transit times.

Except they haven't? You seem to not really know what the FFGX program actually entails as the Italian company only received a 1+9 order ("build 1 now and maybe we'll order another 9 after") of the planned 20 ships of the program, with 3 of the beginning 5 designs still a part of the program (one of which is the design by Austal based on the Independence, the Freedom based design was the one taken off the program). The other designs have a deadline in the middle of 2021 before the next order is supposed to be placed for the program.

@@83athom Well I do know that, but let's be honest, the LCS program suffered countless problems and still does not meet the needs of the US Navy (or any respectable navy for that matter). On the other end, there is the FFGX program, which directly comes from the franco-italian FREMM program, a pretty successful one that produced a very good ship design. Adopting it not only means acquiring a reliable ship design, but also one that would allow for increased interoperability with various allies. You see, I don't usually trashtalk the US shipbuilding industry, as it probably is the best out there. It just so happened that this time, a mix of far-fetched innovation and a will to cut costs led to this situation. It is very unusual for the US Navy to choose a foreign design, and I think it might be a way to remind US shipyards that they need to deliver on their programs without enormous budget overruns (as well as picking a better ship obviously, though it might have been a tough decision to pay for yet another program after all that had been spent on the LCS).

@@clementlassalle4317 "Well I do know that, but let's be honest, the LCS program suffered countless problems and still does not meet the needs of the US Navy" In reference to the first 4 of each class, correct. And as such those are being retired early and the revised design for both are still being built today and has several ordered that have yet to be laid down. "(or any respectable navy for that matter)" Except a few US allies which have requested several Freedom classes fit with different weapons. Also Russia apparently really wants one so they made a copy (which is in construction and set to launch next year, with another 10 or so planned). " On the other end, there is the FFGX program, which directly comes from the franco-italian FREMM program" It did not, this is patently false. A modified FREMM (as the as is design was rejected) was offered as 1 of 5 designs (technically 6, but that other one was rejected outright) for the FFGX program, but it was not based on the FREMM directly. "a pretty successful one that produced a very good ship design" And I agree. I never said it was a bad design. "Adopting it not only means acquiring a reliable ship design, but also one that would allow for increased interoperability with various allies. " Except that's not what the FFGX program was about, and the confusion between people of what the most recent ship programs are supposed to do is why most of them have been crappy. They were designed to be a cheap oceangoing escort for carriers because the Burkes are ageing poorly (and deemed unsuitable for the current and future threat environment by the accountability department), the Ticonderoga is far past it's time, and the LCSs weren't designed for blue water combat. What the USN needed was something to take over being the meatshield of the carrier, capable of anti-aicraft/missile and anti-submarine roles with anti-ship and anti-boat capability being secondary. The LCSs in comparison were designed for anti-boat and anti-submarine capabilities first, with utility roles (such as troop transport, recon, etc) being secondary. " You see, I don't usually trashtalk the US shipbuilding industry, as it probably is the best out there. It just so happened that this time, a mix of far-fetched innovation and a will to cut costs led to this situation." Eh... close but not quite. In the case of the Zumwalt it was a 30+ year long laziness coupled with politics that caused that shitshow, while with the LCSs it was more of adhering to a pretty strict design requirement in a limited time. It being designed with Aluminum hull and Steal supports was a weight saving measure to keep the draft and speed within the requirements (without needing to upscale the engines, which would have had other issues). The issues resulting in some of those choices have since been solved, new exterior coatings and new tools to manage corrosion for example. "It is very unusual for the US Navy to choose a foreign design" Not really. A lot of people would be really surprised to know how much of some pretty famous American designs are composed primarily of foreign designed equipment and parts. For instance the Marine's new rifle is German, and the Army use a lot of Belgian firearms, and a lot of Air Force aircraft used British engines. Plus it really shouldn't be surprising given the only new ship designs since the late 1980s are landing ships and light ships for the Coast Guard. Hell, the Independence is an Austal design... and they're Australian. Yes it was built by their US office, but if you nitpick in that instance then there are a lot of cases where you can say British vehicles are American or French vehicles are German, etc. "and I think it might be a way to remind US shipyards that they need to deliver on their programs without enormous budget overruns" It's more of a "shit we need something now" to fill a glaring hole in the USN's docrine thanks to some wargames where the Nimitz had it's ass handed to it by submarines. If budget overrun was an issue, than a lot of recent programs that did succeed would have been stamped down quite a while ago (like the Ford, the F-35, etc). The LCSs couldn't fill the role that was pointed out because they weren't designed for blue water conditions, nor could the Zumwalt because it was designed for an entirely different role (even ignoring the other issues with it). "as well as picking a better ship obviously, though it might have been a tough decision to pay for yet another program after all that had been spent on the LCS" Except as of now the per unit cost of the Constellation (the FFGX's class name) is over twice that as the per unit cost f both LCSs? And even then the cost of all the LCSs is still dwarfed by the total cost spent on other programs like the F-35?

The fact that the LCS has a small crew post Fitzgerald/McCain collisions must mean that everyone is sleep-deprived to the point they are running on fumes, hallucinating, and seriously overworked. At 24 hours of no sleep, you have the reflexes of someone who is legally drunk, and could get arrested if driving a car. Glad I only work on airplanes where getting decent sleep is a safety requirement.

They actually cost US$360 million, which is cheap for a vessel of this capability. Of course they'd be a huge lot cheaper without all the General Dynamics gear! GD charges like a wounded bull!

It could have been given to a light carrier capable of independent operations outside the main fleet carrying a platoon of Navy SEALs and a squadron of F-35B plus antisub/multipurpose helicopters. There was the SCS, Sea Control Ship concept proposed in the 60's. A small and cheap carrier to patrol designated sea routes without having to bring a whole carrier battle group and the first America class LHA ship is the closest thing since it doesn't have a well deck.

Once billed as the future of the fleet, the LCS program has been hindered by mission modules that haven't materialized, as well as class-wide propulsion and hull crack issues that have plagued the Freedom and Independence LCS classes, respectively. Half of the Navy's littoral combat ship fleet is suffering from structural defects that have led to hull cracks on several vessels, limiting the speed and sea states in which some ships can operate, according to internal records obtained by Navy Times and confirmed by sea service officials.
