A rule made when MPs had swords on their sides. The accusation in that era would almost certainly result in some kind of a duel, a demand for "satisfaction" or, if not forthcoming, a full and public apology. That hardly applies these days so the rule should be changed.

In some ways, the idea of not being able to call another politician a liar in the house of commons makes sense, because it muddies the waters and as per how both government ministers brief the HOC and individual MPs make statements in the house, the facts and figures covering in a statement to the house are usually looked over by under-secretaries or chiefs of staff/ SPADs. The best way of sorting out a situation where a figure is botched or incorrect is to assume no ill-intent and request that people correct whatever was briefed incorrectly ASAP. What's new with the current lot (Bodger before he went, Rees-Mogg, Coffey, and many others) is that they'd just come out with whatever they thought up on the spot or what people with no morals like cummings advising them told them would be politically savvy to say, even if a complete lie. It fits in with James O'brien saying how these people In power have broken the system because the limited system of checks and balances couldn't possibly contain them - if the system has tried to hold them accountable, they'd just bend it to their will. That's when calling them liars has become appropriate and more than reasonable.

I remember being told that worst lies are the ones you tell yourself, the caller may very well be going a long way to proving that to be true.

I find myself really curious as to how this caller expected the call to go. "Can you give me an example?" "Sure. Here's an MP, they've promised not to reduce environmental protections, and then they do. What would you call them, other than 'a liar'?" "Fair enough."

I was driving and listening to the man who found saying the word ‘liar’ extremely extremely difficult. I don’t think he was ever taught this word that’s my explanation. Even my French bulldog was rolling in my car seat laughing. James was mega polite don’t know how he does it!!!!

My teacher used the term “misinformation specialist” when parents would go on a tangent of “don’t call my kid a liar” or “my kid isn’t a liar”. This must be why it is banned for MPs to call each other liars in parliament, even when the person being called a liar is a proven liar.

I think the point is that calling someone a "liar" means you can show that not meeting the promise was always their intent. If you can't show that then it's not appropriate to call them a liar. A better word would be maybe "incompetent" or "flip-flopper" or something along those lines.

What the caller was looking for was: "alternate truth"

I love the way James manages to call the government and Gove liars over and over while giving the caller every chance to offer another word. Right on, James. Someone needs to call government out and those who choose to cover for them.

What is it that makes people think standards in public life are more important than truth in public life? I'm from the US. We've let lying in public life become so normalized that meaningful conversation is impossible. We can't discuss solutions to issues because we can't agree on the reality of our issues. A large part of it stems from a media company owned by one Rupert Murdoch. I believe you folks in the UK are familiar with him. Look at our quadrupole-indicted former president if you want to see the consequences of not calling out a liar in public life.

in the UK parliament, you can lie with impunity. you get kicked out for calling someone a liar even when proven, says it all doesnt it?

@@kanedNunableWe have the speech and debate clause, which protects members of Congress from a host of issues. I've been trying to keep an eye out for UK news because the similarities to what we're experiencing in the US are rather informative.

I wish I had the ability to hold these people accountable through conversation the way James does

I’ve just googled “liar”, and the definition is “a person who tells lies”. The legal definition of a lie is “the misrepresentation of one or more facts in order to gain a benefit or harm another person, where the actor knows or should know that the misrepresentation will be relied upon by another person.” So yeah, it sounds like Michael Gove is a liar.

You could replace 'liar' with 'betrayer' as he betrayed his own words and the public he gave that assurance to.

Betrayer gives the impression of some grand scheme whereby he had to jump through hoops and intellectually deceive. He lied. Also see Brexit.

That's more accurate, actually. Unless there's evidence of the lie. Which is possible, they feel so untouchable that they don't mind admitting their crimes in writing or on video these days.

RSPB: "We apologise for our 'Liars' comment." The last line of their apology? “So, the framing of that tweet, where we called out individual people, we felt was incorrect and inappropriate, and we apologise for that.” Remember when Dennis Skinner was told off for calling half the House crooks, and he amended the statement to half the House are NOT crooks? The RSPB do. "We're sorry we called out individuals. We meant to say the government in its entirety are liars."

Beyond what we “call”, surely the more important thing is what we “do” about them ! At the moment they lie…..and they get away with it with NO CONSEQUENCES!
