That said, the vast majority of what I've learned and actually use could totally be on the job training. Huzzah!

"Discussing the readings without having read the readings" is what I did in theatre studies, to such an extend that one of my professors actually thought I was one of the most hard working students in his class. In reality I spent every seminar with half an hour of avoiding eye contact while other students answered questions, so I could get a grasp of what the seminar was even about. After that, I started asking very specific questions to fill in the blanks, which made it seem like I had read the whole text and was being critical about it xD

I just don’t get why American law school is set up the way it is. Aussie law school will at least teach you enough to get you started. That includes how to research, how to write, how to form arguments, how to cite cases properly, etc. Also, we have assignments as well as exams, and our lectures are recorded so we can watch or rewatch at our convenience. No need to rely on a fellow student and hope they take decent notes. It’s just a much better system.

I have once been told a joke by a law-student (in Austria, though, from what I gather studying law here is quite different. And cheaper): A med student and a law student are told that they are part of a test and that they both have to learn a phone book by heart. The med student immediately starts to complain and argue about the senselessness of the exercise. The law student asks: What's the deadline?

Here in my country people have to work for a year in a legal aid clinic and most law students work as paralegals during law school, to avoid the " I don't know sh*t about f*ck phenomenon". As a physician with five years of clinical experience *before* graduation, I agree with this approach.

I feel like if the tips to doing well in law school are “don’t do everything your professors assign you,” then maybe the professors should be rethinking how much work they actually hand out. Like you wouldn’t need the shortcut if you never had to go on the highway in the first place.

I covered a first-degree murder trial once where it was clear the defendant committed the crime. The defense knew they had no defense so the best they could do was argue that it was second-degree murder and not first-degree. In opening arguments, the defense attorney literally said something to the effect of, "Find my client guilty, but don't find him guilty of first-degree murder." I actually had to listen to my audio recording multiple times to make sure I heard that correctly.
