Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Poor Laurie, I can really feel for him, but believe that he's better suited romantically to Amy. Him and Jo seem better as platonic besties.

It's true for the story, but the chemistry between Timmy and Saoirse is so much more evident, than between him and Florence.

as a woman who has life experiences happened to me, I can say now that it really is better for a woman to be with a man who loves and adores her, eventhough she might not love him that much. Coz he will cherish her, he will still be good to her even when she annoys him. It is much better than a woman who devotes her life and service to a man she adores, only to be belittled or not appreciated enough by a man who doesnt love her back with enough love as she has shown him.

It's not good for the man though. That's why the girl in this movie did what she did.

As someone who read about life in the 1860s... I can say it is better being stuck with a man you don't love than starving to death while trying to sell scribbles post-Civil War Massachusetts -- or almost any place on the planet. Few women in 1860s had any hope of supporting themselves, let alone in writing.

In my opinion she loved him. But could not tolerate the idea of mariage. Marriage in those times were liberty killers for women, and loberty was her most desired treasure. Also when she found the new man that was potentially going to be his husband, she was also insecure about it for the very same reason, she was in love with his liberty more than with anything else.

I'm glad she didn't lie and say "yes" just to make him feel better in the moment. She cares enough for Laurie to tell him the truth that she never saw him as the man she would marry. She wanted a different life and that's okay. As soon as he said, "I'd rather hang myself" I agreed with her that they weren't a good match even more. That's bordering obsession rather than love. Just glad he didn't push for it again and decided to walk away after she was finished talking.

The thing is that these two have so much chemistry, and Jo was flirting with him from the beggining... It just seems odd. Something about this movie made me feel uncanny. It's not like when you truly have a male friend that you dont entirely like... She seemed to have liked him always and being very comfortable with him. I dont know... Still can't make up my mind of how I feel about this movie.

I agree in this film from the moment they met, he looked at her as if she was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen so I believe it was live at first sight for him definitely. Like when they were dancing outside they just clicked. He was looking sideways at her when she was looking through the window. It's very sad. He is being very manipulative and abusive though saying he'd rather hang himself.

I personally felt the complete opposite, it was so noticeable throughout their life that she only loved him as a friend. Like in the scene where the March sisters first go into his house and the first thing Jo notice’s is the books, meanwhile Laurie is looking at her.

Ppl wanting them together are so weird. She’s never loved him in that way. The only reason why she changed her mind was because she got scared of being alone not because she was in love with him. When it comes to Laurie « I love you Jo I have always loved you. But the love I feel for Amy…it’s different » « Are you in love? » « YES! »

This scene is directly from Little Women the novel. The proposal scene between Anne and Gilbert in the book Anne of the Island was totally different. The Anne movie ripped off little women, not the other way around.

I thought so at first too. But apparently the director did that on purpose. Laurie has gentility while Jo has masculine tendencies/color schemes. The director intended for them to be each other's andorgynous counterparts. Nothing wrong with your observation, just wanted to toss some trivia your way.
